Well you need iTunes, but yes if you want to listen on the go you need an iPod unles you burn it to CD and rerip it....loses quality tho.

emusic has recently started in the UK and has a good reputation. 25 free downloads on sign up and 22p or less per song therafter. Catch is - mainly indie labels.

Their front page is so keen to get you to sign up it's hard to see what you can get from them. Here's a deep link so you can search before you sign up.

try dogpile.co.uk and use audio search. Limited becasue it wont have loads of tracks but you wont be disapointed, use 'save target as'
