Lots of people have mentioned on this forum about recycling at home.
What about in public areas. We al;l know putting your litter in abin is better than throwing it on the floor, but where does this litter go? Mostly the same as demostic rubbish.
How about we have recycling bins in the city centre next to the litter bins? Most of the litter we throw away is recycable, drink cans and bottles, crisp packets, fag packets etc, so why not?

I noticed Meadowhall have a bin split into compartments for paper, plastic, food etc now. I wonder how many people just chuck all their rubbish in one slot anyway, though?

I think the more opportunties for recycling the better.
Some morans will put the wrong things in the wrong places on purpose, but most people will enjoy the gimmick of posting bits into the right slots. especially kids and if you get them whilst they are young, they should grow up to be happy recyclers? if that is a real word.
I think recycling at home is also a great option too. but easy on the bins!!! we have 3 with the promise of another two which is getting a bit out of hand. it would be nice to have a choice of bins and then I could choose based on the type of rubbish the house produces. i.e. loads of glass but not much grass....
but i suppose if they went down this approach to help out responsible people, uninterested ones would refuse all bins and just keep adding to our landfill problem.
dont think there is an easy answer to this one.
I think the first battle (the not chucking it on the floor one) has to be won first before we consider recycling.
Sad, but true.
I think every person found littering should have a visit pait to their home, during which the litter wardens trampled chewing gum into the carpets, emptied the contents of the wheelie bin over their bed and posters for up-coming events plastered all over their living room wall.
In Germany they have exactly what you are talking about. Small conpartments for recyling material in all the public bins.
Its a great idea and encourages people to start thinking about doing the same at home. In terms of cost it shouldnt be too bad as the bins already exist.
Recycling bins in public paces should have lids on them. Then anyone who want to think about it lifts the lid and puts it in the right bin. People who don't give a crap would just put all their rubbish in an open top bin. I know it means not all rubbish would get recycled but the people that are bothered at least then have a choice, and it may encourage others who may not have thought about it.

squiggs, i dont think this would work. i know in theary it would, like in america if someone is caught shop lifting there idea of comunity service is to make that theif walk up & down a busy high st wearing one of those big sandwich boards with "I AM A THEIF WATCH OUT FOR ME IN A STORE NEER YOU" writen on it. now to me thats embarrising but i wouldnt shop lift again. but 90% of those stilly americans wearing the board would shop lift again!

Apparently the same in Sweden - they don't have regular bins, just recycling bins. Of course we should do the same here. It would take the stigma away, no longer a chore, instead just normal. It shouldn't be necessary that we provide 'normal' bins for people who can't be bothered to sort their rubbish out. I'd imagine the majority of people who bin their rubbish in public are likely to be the same people who understand the importance of using recycling bins correctly, and the bloody-minded minority who do currently use 'normal' bins but vehemently oppose anything new will have no option but to use the recycling bins. OK, they might mis-use the bins, but then that would just have to be tackled along with the morons LoopyLou mentioned deliberately mis-using them for 'fun'. Of course, none of this deals with our monumental littering problem, but that's a different issue. And the council should at least take a pragmatic view of this problem by recycling what's picked up by litter pickers - surely it can't be that hard to provide these staff with compartmented trolleys instead of bin bags to put rubbish in?
