View Full Version : Did anyone notice the blue moon on Saturday 31/7/04
On Saturday it was the second full moon of the month. Apparently this is the first time this has happened since 2001 and the next one will be in May 2007. This is where the expression 'once in a blue moon' comes from.
I was driving back from a day out on the motorway and couldn't miss it. Did anybody else notice this rare event? :)
I didn't know this, but I attempted to take some photos of the moon on Saturday night.
A couple came out alright(ish).
If I remember I may post them later.

necron99 02-08-2004, 09:48 Was'nt it a blood moon the day before? Either that or blame it on the smog!!
Moon Maiden 02-08-2004, 10:14 I have read about three definitions as to what a blue moon is - one is the second full moon in the month, the other relates to a farmers almanac thing and the other is where the moon is actually blue

Yes, the moon has been known to actually appear blue if there are lots of dust particles in the atmosphere - due to an optical illusion.

Yes - I remember it being a spooky reddish colour too.
Yes, I read it's the second full moon in a month. I was going to make an effort to look out for it and forgot much to my annoyance. Is this what they were gawping at in the Big Brother house?
Rusted Root 03-08-2004, 21:46 I knew it was going to be a blue moon and sat up half the night waiting to see the blighter. I couldn't see it though because of the smog. Grr!
I just saw the freaky crimson moon over the city at around eight.
OK - it's not a very exciting picture but it is of the moon in question....and it was shot in black and white.

Apologies for the quick diversion off topic...
.. that's not as bad as the time I stayed up all night with my co-counsellor on the last day of summer camp to watch the sun rise... only to realise our shadows were in front of us and we'd been facing the wrong way for hours!... :loopy:
