View Full Version : Bole Hill Park Question
christoff 30-09-2006, 12:51 Hello all,
I have been wondering for a couple of weeks now whether or not a tower I can see in the far distance at the top of the park (near the playground) on a clear day is in fact Emley Moor Tower??
jafferolli 30-09-2006, 13:09 Could be Kepples Column at Thorpe Hesley.
If you are looking over Stannington at the tower, then yes it is Emley Moor, I don't think you can quite see Kepples column from the playground.
I work at Mercury at the top of the hill, and noticed the new lights on something, if its emley moor, then those lights are new, as ive never seen them before a couple of months ago, and i spent plenty of time outside on my breaks as its a non smoking building. Looks too bright to be emley moor to me.
CHAIRBOY 01-10-2006, 06:18 Perhaps the lights are part of the upgrade at Emley Moor that caused much disruption to terrestrial TV about six weeks ago? I agree with an earlier poster about the bearings from the Bole Hills.
Sad I know but I've just done a check using google earth and travelled from the field above Bole Hill playground in the direction of where I think this tower is and by going in a straight line I eventually got to Emley Moor transmitter. However just one point is that when you look at this tower at night you can see 4 red lights on it. These lights must be very big & bright to see them from so far away . Could I be wrong and it is not Emley Moor transmitter ?

It's not the transmitter on the tops near Grenoside is it?
christoff 01-10-2006, 15:09 Yeah, Emley Moor Tower does indeed have red lights to mark it out at night, it has done for some time. I asked because I used to see this tower all the time when I lived in Huddersfield, & was quite surprised to see something that looked like the top of the same tower all the way in Sheffield!
I'd be very surprised if it's possible to see Emley Moor TV mast from the Bole Hills - when I lived in Stocksbridge you couldn't see Emley Moor until you were nearly up at Bolsterstone.
If you are looking towards Emley Moor from Bole Hills it is highly likely you'll be seeing the relay mast on top of Hunshelf Bank overlooking Stocksbridge.

or the one above Oughtibridge

pippadoll 08-10-2006, 20:56 My drive to work takes me pretty close to Emley Moor and the lights are new. They are now red. I thought it was my memory going as it hadn't been lit up for a while, but I can not remember seeing it so vividly.
From the bole hills it would be Emley.

From the top of the Bole Hills you can definitely see Emly Moor, at night it has the four red lights on it, and if you look through binoculars you will see for sure what it is.
al_partridge 08-10-2006, 23:47 I'm not surpised if the Emley transmitter is visible, it's very tall and not really all that far away.
However, there was a thread on here a while back in which somebody came up with the absurd statement that it was once possible to see Blackpool Tower from here!
nah .... emley moor has always been lit, this is recent, and its in the direct line of oughtibridge, so my conclusion is its that.

Take enough acid, and anythings possible.
I was up there a fortnight ago from yesterday and I will attest to another sighting of the elusive and mysterious transmitter.

Slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me what the other mast with the dishes is on longcols photo of the Stocksbridge mast?
pippadoll 12-10-2006, 21:34 Emley Moor was defo not red last winter. Also, was driving near New Mill this morning and there was another transmitter, bright red towards Holmfirth. Is this the one visible from the bole hills. May be nearer Oughtibridge, not far from Strines/ the route to Manchester, sort of...

I presume this is the Holme Moss transmitter - no that wouldn't be visible from Bole Hills - Stannington gets in the way.
Regarding Emley Moor, I take back what I said in my earlier post - the transmitter visible from Bole Hills above Hunshelf Bank is bang in line for Emley Moor - I'll take another look in clearer weather.
