It is news guaranteed to raise a cheer among those who enjoy a glass or two: drinking half a bottle of wine a day can make your brain work better, especially if you are a woman.

Alcohol makes you smarter?
Yes, I've seen all the super intelligent MENSA candidates on Streetcrime UK rolling in the gutter in their own vomit and urine, after having a 'brain boost' of alcohol.
Well, I've been in the pub this afternoon, so expect an increased level of intellectual debate from me this evening
Agent Dan 02-08-2004, 07:53 (Alcohol kills brain cells) + (Survival of the fittest)
= weak brain cells die first.
Therefore brain becomes more efficient...
into a farter more like.
Whoever makes things like that up should get a real job.
I didn't say alchohol abuse. it's a genuine study by genuine scientists with genuine results. So i'm for a quick shandy and expect to produce an extra line or two of code tomorrow on the basis of it. (or a better written line saving me 2, you never know).

Alcohol makes you smarter : Try telling that to the cops when you next get picked up for drink driving. The first couple of drinks can heighten your senses but it's all downhill after that I'm afraid.
do you people actually bother to read articles before you post willy nilly.
it doesn't claim that you are smarter whilst half cut, you're smarter the rest of the time, when you're sober.
Craig7777 15-02-2007, 08:47 Yippee i'm a genius :)
LordChaverly 15-02-2007, 08:59 I have often wondered why I am so bright
welshchick 15-02-2007, 09:04 if i drank two glasses of wine every night i would be perminently drunk, and would get none of my uni work done! cannot handle my alcohol at all! if i go out drinking i am usually still tipsy until around 3pm the next day! process alcohol verrrry slowly - always good fun trying to get dresses when your still p****d though, not that im laughing that evening!
although did go out once in my first year and found out i had a test the next day from of my coursemates that i bumped into.was already half-cut and so decided to stay out and stay up to revise when i got in. got 96% so maybe there is some truth in it!
(or a better written line saving me 2, you never know). The last time I coded under the influence I somehow managed to crash four computers simultaneously, whereas before I was only crashing one at a time. That's an alcohol-induced efficiency!

In the UK, universities have always been associated with an imbibing culture (some of the Oxford colleges even have their own wine cellars). Who can imagine a university without a bar? Well, go to the US and most of the campuses are dry - not a drink to be had anywhere. I wonder if there is any difference in standards between UK and US universities because of this?
Craig7777 15-02-2007, 09:17 This Thread is brought to you by the Year 2004 and the Letter C :)

The difference is that US univeristys have private funding as well. Uk based companies don't bother to put money into universities.

And actually, this just isn't true, I've been to a few frat parties, if anything, US students are more irresponsible with Booze. Although their boozing is less regular.
byevilroot 15-02-2007, 10:54 But it's the same with all these studies, an equally valid conclusion would be that smarter people like drinking more.
Crayfish 15-02-2007, 16:18 Strange for it to show a dose-dependent correlation with alcohol consumption and IQ though... I'd certainly find it difficult to propose a mechanistic hypothesis as to why linear increments in IQ lead to proportional increases in alcohol consumption.
On the other hand the explanation of increased blood flow (shown in other contexts to increase brain function and known to be a feature of alcohol, important in its cardioprotective role) makes a certain amount of intuitive sense.
Still doesn't prove anything, but a dose of logic and wider knowledge of physiology (or whatever field a study is relevant to) can help to interpret results such as correlations and put likelihoods on which side causality lies.
Ms_Tetley 15-02-2007, 16:31 So if i drink a full bottle ..Im twice has smart?? :D :D :D
LordChaverly 15-02-2007, 16:41 What I am certain of is that heavy drinking will destroy whatever talent you have. Moderate drinking may well be beneficial. Heavy drinking will make you stupid in every sense.
Crayfish 15-02-2007, 17:26 See below. Double post glitch thing.
Crayfish 15-02-2007, 17:26 Yes, agreed. I've associated with a lot of Europeans in the last few months and one thing that it's brought home to me is how different the UK attitude to drinking is.
Moderate drinking in the french, italian or spanish style is not only healthier but much more enjoyable. I started drinking again this year after three years of teetotalism, partly due to research such as this - but with a commitment to moderacy. Enough to enhance a party mood and loads better than waking up every morning feeling ill!
