 Has anyone had any experience of having to deal with Radon gas in the Totley area?
Just had an enviromental search back from our solicitors which says this may be a problem , I've never heard of it before

What exactly has your solicitor said? I suspect that we'll find that your solicitor doesn't understand the results of the environmental search.

Radon occurs mainly in Cornwall, Northamptonshire and parts of the Peak District, so it's possible parts of Totley have above average concentrations.

It's supposedly quite easy to deal with - you have an air pump fitted which vents the gas into the atmosphere, thereby diluting it.

No disrespect to Tony, but I'd be surprised if a qualified conveyancing solicitor didn't understand environmental reports.

Look at the HPA website which specifically mentions what to do in response to an environmental search

Ah, well my own experience tells me that I wouldn't be surprised. ;)

A basic electronic Homecheck report is often riddled with inaccuracy when you have to relate it to a specific property so unless the solicitor understands the specifics of what it means (rather than what it says) it's quite easy to scare yourself, hence my comment about what they specifically said.

It may be perfectly ok and it may not, but as you say its not a disaster if there is radon present.

We had a Radon test when we moved in. Costs about £35 and involves putting a couple of small sensors (filter paper type, not electronic) in a couple of rooms in the house and sending off the sensors after a couple of months. Ours came back with a "normal" reading so it's worth it for piece of mind.
Use the link in a previous posting for more info.
