poppylamb 28-09-2006, 09:08 PM Can any one recommend a trustworthy removal company that doesn't cost the earth ? Mr Poppylamb may be away when we move and I am far too weedy to help carry the wardrobe downstairs . If we didn't have to remortgage the new house to pay them too that would be perfect :)

It's not all about things being cheap though is it? Cheap is no use if they aren't trustworthy and careful with your things.
Sorry I can't actually recommend anyone- I haven't moved house in 15 years.
seeyoujimmy 29-09-2006, 02:07 PM Andrews removals, they are in Yellow pages, we lived in a 3rd floor flat with no lift, three guys cam round emptied, moved the stuff and put back in in 3 hours (and we had loads) £47 (i think) per hour including vat, min 4 hours. Dead nice guys, quick and cheap!
poppylamb 29-09-2006, 07:22 PM Thanks for your advice , think I will give SBS a call and see how much they are .
Patchy 29-09-2006, 08:41 PM I would recommend Victoria Removals. They moved us from Netherthorpe to Gleadless (3 bedrooms) for £110. Very good service, and no breakages!
boosh 30-09-2006, 03:47 AM poppy i think sbs is your best choice...as said before ring bev...she runs the place....she will do deals.
prices i have found to be reasonable....always remember buy cheap buy twice!!...not saying they are expensive...we always yse them at work.
bigsteve 30-09-2006, 11:39 PM ok im biasd because i own a removal company but some general advice is big isnt always best (ask my wife lol)
make sure of a couple of things before you book your removal :
1.you know the hourly rate inc vat and any extras (traveling time, min time, extra charge for weekends)
2.that the vehicle they are using is big enough to move ALL your items in 1 go. (if there is extra trips you dont pay the extra)
3. READ THERE TERMS AND CONDITIONS BEFORE THE REMOVAL
this is the most important one
4.make sure they are bringing 2 men (at least) more men bigger hourly rate but quicker move.
5. dont pack ur kettle, its hard work and a drink of coffee will do wonders for the little extras that are asked.
6. ring at least 5 companys for a quote, (make sure there numbers and addresses are different) some companys go under 5 different names and numbers.
7. make sure if the company aint packing your stuff you do, ask them for boxs if you cant get em, better packed it is the quicker it is the safer it is the happyer you are.
ok so there you have the quick guide to moving without blowing my own trumpet once lol:thumbsup:
mickyboy 02-10-2006, 10:46 AM Hire avan and do it yourself
boosh 02-10-2006, 12:01 PM ring metro...they do good deals and ask mikey boy to help you with the wardrobe!
kat_1b 02-10-2006, 01:07 PM I wouldn't use Keetons, we did and it wasn't a pleasant experience.
Hummybabe 02-10-2006, 03:08 PM Dont use ab castle either they charged us £282 to move from norfolk park to manor top...disgusting!
Hummybabe 02-10-2006, 03:10 PM Dont use ab castle either they charged us £282 to move from norfolk park to manor top...disgusting!
...and they EXPECT you to make them a cup of tea while having a break every 10-15 minutes.
boosh 02-10-2006, 04:44 PM see listening to all this.....ring bev at sbs....no problems even if they are abit more expensive, you know the job will be done well.
Talk to bev for a price and tell her boosh sent you

mifsit 06-08-2007, 04:09 PM Got to suggest SBS, we've used others in the past but SBS give the best overall service. The office staff polite and helpful. The lads who do the removal polite, and a laugh too. Always careful with our stuff.
davey1 07-08-2007, 11:05 AM Hi its dave from 2 men 1 van, we will offer a good competitive price, any day,any time, phone me on (07904) 698726 or pm me or e-mail davidowl@hotmail.co.uk

Has anyone used Greens removals? we had a few quote's over the last few days and it's a toss up between them and SBS. Greens offer free boxes where as SBS charge for them and have a more expensive hourly rate for a friday.
higgins 09-09-2007, 01:05 PM Try the place opposite Endcliffe park, next road down from Onslow Rd, at bottom of the hill - he usually does work for the council, but will do other stuff at decent rates if given some notice
Glennis 15-10-2007, 12:24 PM Anyone out there who can give me any more up-to-date reccomendations to move my goods and chattels?
I want someone reliable at a reasonable price. Its a two bed flat, to a three bedroom house. Cheers.
kevdon 18-10-2007, 07:13 PM We used SBS last time we moved, they were efficient but very expensive. I've heard Pickfords are good and will probably try them next time. I'll ask for a price for the job this time and NOT settle for just an hourly rate as this gets expensive if there are any delays in getting the keys to your new property.
Kev
littlemissy 22-10-2007, 09:51 PM I have been warned off SBS by a couple of people - unreliable, turning up 3 hours late, not being careful with the boxes etc.
We have been recommended Speights and are using them when we move at the end of the month.
The_Bear 24-10-2007, 06:53 PM Pickfords have quoted me £520 (3 bed semi to local 3 bed detached) including late key and cancellation insurance.
SBS are £55/hour + vat (min 4 hours) = £50 cancellation insurance.
Its hard to know which to choose.
SBS will be cheaper if they load and unload quickly, but if im left waiting for the key and it drags on then Pickfords quote for doing the job may be better.
i assume the removal men dont rush, unless they want to finish work early.

Hi little missy, i am suprised about that.. i have always found them to be exellent
But i hear that speights are ok as well...
our firm use sbs once a week and we dont have any problem....:)

Get SBS to quote.... bet they would be cheaper and if you move with them... ask for danny and andy:cool:
Tricky 25-10-2007, 01:16 PM We used SBS - they were excellent. They managed to get another crew in halfway through to make sure we got in before nightfall (for a price of course, but well worth it).
The_Bear 25-10-2007, 09:26 PM Get SBS to quote.... bet they would be cheaper and if you move with them... ask for danny and andy:cool:
Thanks boosh
I did ring SBS but they just quoted an hourly rate of £55/hour (+vat).
I got the impression that they dont do individual quotes, just a flat hourly rate
If SBS do the move in say 4-5 hours then they would be cheaper than Pickfords. But If I have delays getting the key to the new house then they could work out expensive if they charge by the hour.
Its a gamble that could easily go wrong
Cheers

They will quote if you ask them. They quoted for us. We didn't choose them in the end, but the quote was reasonably competative.
We used S.B.S when we moved in the end, Greens gave our booking to someone else. Got to say that the lads who came were brill, can not sing thier praises enough. We were all done and dusted by 2 p.m. Did not work out too bad price wise, And the way they manouverd the huge van down a very narrow double parked road at Walkley was nothing short of a miracle. cheers lads
davey1 30-11-2007, 08:04 PM hi if we can't beat the price i'd be suprised we are fully insured give us a call for a free quote

bluecanary 06-12-2007, 05:45 PM We moved recently and after phoning around for a few quotes, ended up going with Speights. I would definitely recommend them - they turned up on time and seemed generally very professional. They charge either by the hour or do a flat day rate (it's probably best to go with the latter if you're in a chain).
Good luck with your move!

We had speights too for our move and well they were really spot on to be honest. The chap came out before and gave us a quote based on what we had in the house which was competative and was for 3 people. They worked at it like troopers all day with all our stupid boxes, and by the end of the day we had 6 men on. All that and they even took our wardrobe apart and re-assembled it 'cos it wouldn't fit up the stairs. Well impressed.

They did a fantastic job for us.
Dead nice guys, quick and cheap! Very good service, and no breakages!
I give them an all round thumbs up!
davey1 10-12-2007, 04:14 AM cheers wangii for your kind words, thanks for the breakfast, coffee and lager. we might not have a big lorry like the big boys but we are a small family business that offer good customer service and probably cheaper
thanks

absynthfairy 14-12-2007, 07:15 PM Hiya...
Me and my house mate are needing to move house in the very early new year from the new middlewood estate to the new strata development in Kiveton Park. We'll be moving to separate properties but they are next door to eachother (a first floor flat and a house). We have quite a lot of furniture but not silly amounts...should all fit in one lorry - or a couple of runs in a big van.
Could anybody recommend a firm? Or are you a firm that could help? Thinking 2nd,3rd,4th Jan - we're teachers so it needs to be that week whilst still on holiday.
Please PM me or reply here.
Thanks,
Joanne

nigelsms 21-12-2007, 10:46 AM Hi Good to hear mostly good feed back about removal companies, I own Specialised Movers one of the largest removers along side SBS, You will find you get what you pay for when moving and would always sugest you get a fixed Price quotation from A B.A.R member, would you get in a black cab with a meter to go to London or would you agree a price ?
Good luck to everyone for Christmas and have a Happy New Year, and yes SBS are a good company!
Wayneos 29-12-2007, 08:56 PM Hi, I would have to say the lads @ SBS seem top lads, met a few when we have been moving out & they have been moving in. Pickfords are also a very good company, the army use them when posting the regiments and they are very good at what they do, but then they are the major league players so you get what you pay for.
artivejoy 03-01-2008, 02:11 AM SBS is good.

nigelsms 03-01-2008, 12:18 PM Hi if you didnt get sorted call us Specialised Movers 0114 2611183
nigelsms 04-01-2008, 04:54 PM Hi,
Give Specialised Movers a call, they are up and down the country most weeks and can give you a very good price. Specialised Movers also offer a part-load service which would work out very cheap.
The number is : 0114 2611183
IamScott 05-01-2008, 03:22 PM Hi,
If you havent located a removal company yet, log on to truckspace.co.uk and advertise your load. There are thousands of hauliers available for removals on a full load or part load basis helping to keep the cost down. Some hauliers may even complete the move on a back load basis.
nigelsms 07-01-2008, 09:47 AM Hi I do agree with this, but wouldnt recommend it, you will not know the companies credability and they wont know the size of the job until they get there this could be a disater, so yes it is an option, but beware!
Cheers
Nigel
pitgurl 08-01-2008, 05:53 PM I would like to recommend Specialised Movers - Sheffield.
They recently moved my 6 bedroom property from Dore.
Specialised Movers provided me with a full packing & un-packing service.
The guys were fabulous to work with and everything went very smooth.
The surveyour that came out was very professional & helpful. He assisted me through all my pre move nerves right up until the last piece of furniture was positioned in my property.
Upon completion of my move Specialised Movers did a follow up call approx 1 week after my move to make sure that i was satisfied with their service & that i had settled in ok.
This was very nice of them and to be honest they are the only removal company to provide me with such a good service. I would definatly reccomend them again and will definatly be using them again in the future.
pitgurl 08-01-2008, 05:59 PM poppy i think sbs is your best choice...as said before ring bev...she runs the place....she will do deals.
prices i have found to be reasonable....always remember buy cheap buy twice!!...not saying they are expensive...we always yse them at work.
I would have to strongly disagree with this one.. i moved with SBS 3yrs ago and had an awful experience.
I had to chase them for the quotation, then chase them to confirm my booking... once the removal day finally came round it was a total nightmare, boxes were put into the wrong rooms, china & glassware was broken.
It seemed that all SBS cared about was getting the job done & taking my money.
Mrs C 17-03-2008, 02:35 PM Hi
Can anyone recommend a good removal firm that doesn't cost the earth?
Thanks
tia1803 17-03-2008, 02:36 PM try van man on here!
katie_dust 17-03-2008, 10:13 PM I used Speights, Malcolm is a lovely bloke and very reasonable.
lisalee 18-03-2008, 12:02 PM We're using Avante soon, Ive heard some good reports about them, and they gave me the best quote. You book with them and they give you free boxes, which always help when youre moving, you can never have too many!
Ill let you know how they are.
dylan66 18-03-2008, 04:25 PM Hi
We used A & H at Hillsborough, they moved us would you believe when our remover let us down late on the night before! A & H were great and reasonable, they could have hiked the price but didn't as a result we recommended our son to them and they acted as his remover and did a good job at a reasonable price.
I can tell you who not to use as they are still advertising in the yellow pages.
bluecanary 19-03-2008, 02:27 PM Speights did a good job for us too.
Rachylou 19-03-2008, 09:16 PM How much roughly do removal men charge? We are moving soon but were going to try and do it by ourselves.
Thanks
Rachael
lisalee 19-03-2008, 09:20 PM we've been quoted £40 per hour because we're moving on a saturday, but the man we spoke to at Avante removals said he'd do us a good deal. Plus they gave us free boxes which is great!
Doing it yourself is a good option, if you are organised, thats why Im paying someone else to do it!
citroen 20-03-2008, 12:07 AM a2b removals i used about £300 for 2 men and a massive lorry for the day
Littlepink 24-03-2008, 10:29 PM Gillots removals are good . They moved us quite a few years ago . Can't remember how much it cost us though
SMK79 28-03-2008, 08:32 PM Avante are brilliant. Really quick and helpful and they are very careful with moving stuff. I have used them twice in the last 18 months and would recommend them highly.
jen13kd 29-03-2008, 04:09 PM I'm due to move on the 25th april - can anyone recommend a good removal firm for a simple job - we dont need the packing service etc - and we're on a pretty tight budget!
mrmist 30-03-2008, 12:41 PM Another vote for Speights from me. They did our move in October, worked really hard and did the job for a fixed price (quoted in advance).
we used SBS last year when we moved, they were bloody fantastic. they charged an hourly rate I think it was around 40 quid for big van and two men. We did a lot of box lugging as well to save time. Due to the funds clearing on the sale fairly quickly it cost around 260 quid for the move.
davey1 30-03-2008, 10:23 PM Hi its dave from 2 Men 1 Van,we charge per the load and you have the option of man and van or 2 Men 1 Van at a price to suit your budget.fully insured with goods in transit insurance of £15,000 per load

lisalee 31-03-2008, 04:22 PM We had Avante Removals last Saturday. The lads were Steve and Steve!! They worked their bottoms off all day, and were really good. We paid £40 per hour+vat because we moved at the weekend, so overall from a 2 bed to a 2 bed house, we paid £235. A bit pricey, but worth it. :hihi:
