Just to let you know Jasper, had his teeth out today, I've just fetched him back, he's a bit woozy, but he got through the anesthetic ok, just see how he goes now.
The vet said it was a realy bad infection he'd got from the bad teeth, but I've been realy worried all day with him being so old, hopefully now he should be a lot happier, thankyou very much to everyone who offered me support, it helped me so much.

Thank you for letting us know that he's got through it safe and well MARY POPPINS- now all you have to do is provide the snuggles and soft squishy meals to help him recover properly (although I'm sure that bit isn't a problem!).

Glad your purdy tat made it home in one piece :)

We had a dog who had all his teeth out, but you know what they're like, he still insited on eating dog biscuits for breakfast  It was painful watching him, so we resorted to smashing them with a hammer for him

I hope you get his meals settled into something he can and will eat quite quickly :)

He's doing realy well, but he always loved dried food and I always kept a bowl for him to nibble on and he just keeps looking for them.
I gave him the fish out of some fish fingers yesterday and he loved that, but he kind of yawned and whan I looked in his mouth the vet has left one of his top fangs on one side and a bottom one on the other side, my oh says its so he can still go hunting, yeah right his hunting days have been over a long time, he rarely goes out theses days, I'd be scared of the other cats picking on him.

Thanks for all replies we realy appreciate it, its quite comforting.

Leaving the canines wherever possible is important for jaw alignment, especially the lower ones.

Cats eat with a 'straight up straight down' jaw movement, and they don't use the muscles to move their jaw to either side. The jaw is even shaped to allow the canines lie along the bone without damaging the gums.

If you take out the canines the jaw can get a bit wobbly and cause them problems with their eating, so they leave them wherever possible (and it's really important if they have any molars left because they make a real mess of their mouths if they can't control whether they bite their cheeks while eating).

One of mine is a black persian and used to have great big long upper canines that stuck out proud of her lower jaw, but both of them had to go when she had her dental last year- she doesn't look the same without them, but I hope she's more comfortable.

not having his usual food available might stress him out :(

could you grind some up in a blender or food processor for him, even if it's just so it's 'there' as a comfort to him?

or pour some warm water on a little for him - so he has access to the same smelling stuff, even if it doesn't crunch?

Thanks very much Strix, I never thought to do that, cos he realy loved the dried food, mind I've just given him some prawns, which went down quite well.

I imagine they did ;)

It doesn't matter if he doesn't eat his dried food, just as long as it's there for him to know that everything is right with the world - just whilst he's recovering :)
