Can anyone help? My computer will not switch off, it goes so far after I have clicked close down then just stick on "windows is closing down" and continues to run. Any help much appreciated.

what version of windows is it?

Start the taskmgr, ctrl-alt-dlt on all versions I think, then kill every process you can, then try to shut it down.

Failing that, hold the power button in for 5 seconds, or pull the power cord out of the wall.

I had this problem myself some while back with a broadband modem driver for the Intel ADSL modem chipset.

I uninstalled the driver and it shut down OK - so I then looked around for a new driver. On installing a more up to date driver it was fine.

A right ain in the rear.

See if there's anything in either of these two pages to help:

Ok now thanks for all the help on getting this infernal thing to shut down....now here's the next problem. There appears to be not enough pixels, every page is all grainy andbarely readable,

I have tried going to properties then onto setting and changing colours from there but every time it asks to restart it just goes back to the original settings. Any ideas ?

what resolution are you using? right click on desktop, click properties, click settings. resolution is displayed on the left hand side, something like 800x600.

I've tried doing that and when it tells you to restart it just goes back to the 640 x 480 pixels with 16 colours. Any ideas as to how I might keep it at the new settings ?

At the following link, you'll find a list of troubleshooters. One is for the display adaptor.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/hsc_tshooter_list.asp

Alternatively (Win XP only I think), go back to your display properties page and click Troubleshoot.

If none of this works, get back to us :)

Is the machine starting in safe mode because of it not shutting down correctly?

If so, then no matter how many times you change the resolution settings you ain't going to see a difference because safe mode is always set to the low quality resolution.

I've got it to close down all right, and it starts up ok too, now it's just the resolution settings that have gone awry. The damned things wont stay on the new settings when I restart it after it prompts me. I am trying to get it to go to 800 x 600 with 256 colours.
