Good luck with the coming season Steve, I just wish I had more time and money to be more commited into the forum team set up. I am having complications with my mortgage so i'm stressed out enough already.

What I hope to do is get some people together and if you are willing put the second team or lower in for a game as a training session. I'm not sure how you will be working the training sessions out but I would be willing to help out in this way.

Regards, Gerard.

To all the people, who have been on this message board!

Im also lookin to be playin in the uni team in Sept. Any of you guys in Sheffield at the moment and know if any people are gettin together for some games/scrimmages? Ive already used the uni tea website, but no one gives a ****!!!! Im from Sheffield so im willin to play if anyone knows of any or wants to organise a game. Im gettin into proper training now so just need some game practice!

Im willing to play in the forum team too, with some of the uni lads. I coached a youth team last year in the league (should be this year too) and it seems a safe league to get playin in!

PS: R8 Gez (duffman) remember me! Its Adam we used to play together me, you and danny up at stannington, and a hills' and parson cross a couple of years a go! How ya doin pal, hows the knees!!!! Good to get some practice in if ya willing just send us a reply!

Well I won't be living in Sheff til freshers week obviously but I wouldn't be adverse to coming over for a day or something to check the city out and could fit some ball in if some other people are interested.

Holy **** Batman!!!! Man, it's been a while Adam. I will send you a PM but if you see this first check out the Forum b'ball team thread further down I want to get a team going in the Sheffield league for the winter. Also, I will be hoping to get some training games together with the uni team. I just need some people that will be commited to playing regular that can spare some cash.

What are you talking about? I run the uni team and website & Ive never heard of you, never mind spotted a post asking for a game.
Please give it time for the website to get up and running, it's only a few weeks old & until term starts there is only so many people who are going to see it.

Yeah! No worries about the warm up games! Il get em sorted as soon as term starts etc & we've sorted our uni team out after trials etc! Sounds good for all concerned if we get this up and running coz we could do with friendlies to warm up for the season etc. :D

Im off to cyprus on my travels soon so dont think that I've lost interest in the whole thing. Just e-mail me (pughman@hotmail.com) if u get the basics of a team sorted around sept 1st - whilst Im away, just so I can plan our side of things etc.

Hey Everyone,
Im up in Sheffield from Mon 16th to Fri 20th Aug for resit examinations. Just wanted to say if anyone wants a few hours playing somewhere Il be up for it. :)
The only two, avaliable & free, courts I know of are
1) the large school just downhill from Broomhill shops (not very good standard on their playground), and ...
2) I think its called Summerhill school - near the skate park & new flats off West St (better quality courts but still nothing to shout about)

When it gets near term time I'l take my digi camera down and sort maps and stuff for new students etc.
Anyone interested?

Jonesy
04-08-2004, 15:20
Yeah I'll probably be up for coming across for the day or something. We're talking outdoor courts? I'll have to get my AND1 Streetball DVDs out! I can do any date in that period except the 18th. Will need decent directions if we sort it out cos I"ve never even been into the middle of sheffield and my navigational skills are frankly appalling!

I'll be up for that, if you don't mind getting the tram to Hillsborough there's some all sport/weather courts there. They may be full however with the kids off school.

I think the school you are thinking of is Springfield school behind the West one flats. They have a court but buil a playground on half of it, fenced off the playground so there is only one basket now:loopy:

If the buses are back on Stannington park has a court set up as part of the EBBA project, that's another option.

Sounds like a plan but I'l have to base it round my resit exams, Tues & Thurs 9am! The kids will have gone home after 4pm so we could play then. It'l be light til 9 ish! But the weather may be sh*t (as it is now) so no 100% can be made.
As for you Jonesy with ur And One DVD's, haha, I own the whole set!

Jonesy
05-08-2004, 18:47
Yeah the weather is a bitch, you can't plan anything outdoors when it's like this for fear that it'll lash it down and ruin it! Hopefully some of the people who replied to the forum team thread may see this over the next few days and be up for it too. Probably won't get enough to make it worth booking an indoor court but still, the weather *should* be ok in the middle of August, you would hope so anyway.

Hi guys!

Im still up for whatever you sort out, as long as its after work hours (9-5 :( ) There are plenty of outdoor courts knocking around, i used to play up at crookes and also norton college and they arnt too bad, but im cool to play wherever is best for everyone to get to.
PM me to let me know what gets arranged :)

Yeah soz about that (Stevepugh), what i meant was that no one had replyed but i didnt realise that no one would still be in sheffield!! No disrespect to ya!..........

Any way, im up for a game anywhere in Sheffield, probably nearer the uni the better for the people who dont hav a clue where to go!! Keep us posted with what you decide is the best court around there, i cant think of any around there but King Edwards school (the big school some one had talked about) court is ok, not too many around actually! And if the whether is rubbish, we could just hire a court at a leisure centre, probably Hillsborough one!
Gez send us an email address and il email you cuz i cant use the PM thingy?!

Jonesy
06-08-2004, 16:20
Cool, 5 people up for it now. If anyone knows anyone else we could rake in then yeah like you say we could go indoors and not worry about a) finding an outdoor court that isn't being used and b) getting soaked!

StevePugh
14-08-2004, 20:12
As im goin to my sheffied uni house, in Crookes, on Monday my internet access is going to be very limited for organising meeting up for a few hours. Good news is it doesnt go dark til 9pm so there is plenty of time to sort a game etc.

I suggest Thursday (purely coz my exams have finished) at the large school just down from Broomhill, at say 6pm??? Realistically there not goin to be many of us so we only need half court to play on. Trying to find a court in Hillsbourgh with no idea where it is may be too tricky a task.

What do you think? :D

adamkharchi
15-08-2004, 12:14
I'm up for that! Is it King Edwards School courts you mean? I'l probably get there a bit earlier for a bit of a warmup/shoot around etc, if anything changes about arrangements then just post a reply. Sees ya then. Adam

adamkharchi

Just checked weather on internet and it says that it will be raining on thursday! It may change nearer the date but if its just on-and-off spitting then im ok with that. But just in case do you have a plan B, maybe indoors...? Adam

Jonesy
15-08-2004, 12:44
I"ve posted a reply in the forum basketball team thread. I checked the weather out as well and the report I saw was for heavy rain unfortunately, you never know whether to believe them or not! Doesn't look too clever all week though. How many of us are there, 5 at the moment? If we end up playing then I'll need to know where I"m heading cos I don't know the area at all, if I could meet someone in the city that would be handy but no worries if not I'll sort it out. Being a local what are the indoor options Adam? Even if there was somewhere available I guess you would need 6 minimum to make it worth booking a court really? See what Steve thinks anyway, he's the boss :)

StevePugh
15-08-2004, 21:11
Im not the boss! haha! Well ok in uni time, doing uni team stuff yeah maybe but now i just wanna play same as everyone else:)

At home in Liverpool Ive been playing for about an hour every day training for the new season, and now that I have some responsibilty I want to cement my place in the uni starting 5.
I just hope everyone else puts similar practise to gain a really good standard for the team.

As for playing next week, Im up pretty much whatever the weather at King Edwards school Thurs 6pm - unless its heavy rain (coz then its just dangerous). Hope everyone is up for this too.

Jonsey: If you can get to Broomhill from town, 52 bus, I'l meet you outside Somerfield at 5:55pm and we'll walk down.

See you next week :D

ALL HAIL TEAM CAP!!!

Come term time party boy its your turn to take over & show everyone who's the daddy!
Im really looking forward to the new term, and the new season. Ive really been working on my game and now Ive actually got good ball handling skills, better shooting/passing but most of all ...... 2 coaching certificates which Im gonna (as promised) help some of the weaker members of the team on Sundays with their game. I think I'l be able to fill the void on the court left from Tom Hope leaving, but I hope we get some good talent coming through too.

All Ive go to do first is pass my two re-sit's and then were cooking on gas for next year! :(
Check out the uni notice board in the union too, also my handywork. :) Now u can do what you do best and plan our socials for next year!

As a very keen college ball fan in the US ( I don't like NBA ) I was wondering if there is any kind of university league play in the UK along the lines of our NCAA. I note from comments in this link that court space is at a premium, and much of it outdoors. It's amazing to see the quality of Olympic play especially free and 3 point shooting on national teams, where basketball is very secondary to football. The US is spoiled and behaves like it.

Yeah we have national leagues for university basketball. Sheffield University is in Northern Division One, but there are around 7 divisions for North, South, Midlands etc. There is also two Premier Leagues (North and South) that have the best teams in the country.

BUSA organise it all, check out the website:

As my photography skills improve over the year I hope were all gonna look like the pro's on camera! It will be good when were playing proper games during the season and we'll try to get everyone in action. :D

I was thinking we should do a team photo done at the end of the year (like every other sports team). But we can get it done a hell of a lot cheaper than everyone else as they all pay around £15 for the one team photo (each), as where we can get them printed at Jessops, any size - prob 10 x 12 inch, from my 5 Mega Pixel digi camera and framed for say £5 each and it would be perfect quality :)

Its something Id love to have and keep.
Plus we could also do action shots too if people wanted. Wont cost us anything really & could raise money for the club.

What do you think?

adamkharchi
27-08-2004, 13:52
Seems like a good idea!!! A team photo would really be good, like you said it would be good for the team and yourselves to have. Maybe get profiles onto internet, with pics and a little info about the teams players (probably had that idea already tho')!! Action shots maybe cool too, from the games, competitions and training. I'll be comitted to the team next year so anything that helps us get through the year financially im up for! Adam

StevePugh
28-08-2004, 22:34
The photo's would be pretty much non profit, but its just something I think would really produce some good team spirt thats never been there before!
As for all the financial issues for the team Ive opened this up to everyone on the "Sponsorship" page of the website, so everyone know what the real situation is and can offer idea's to stop getting into debt like EVERY other uni team.

Tom done a great job last year keeping us to only (minus) £70, most teams were around (minus) £1000-£8000! But as were training at Goodwin all year our costs have gone up and so must our fundraising.
This is where the club t-shirts (final arrangements are getting sorted), team photo's and pay to play competitions (with tropheys) come into play.

But I really thing that its going to be BETTER THAN EVER, by far, as a whole team instead of just 5 or 6 select players.

Most if not all of our games are in the evening's on Wednesdays, and sometimes we either stay over (if its really far away & go for AWESOME nights out) or get back about midnight. Our home games are pretty much the same too. You'll have to make sure you have monday nights free too for training - essential for any firt team member.
See "Timetable" page on the website for details.

As for making the team, you shouldnt have any worries as long as you can stay fit & avoid your injury's re-occuring. We could really use your handle & passing ability, espesh with Josh as our other guard you'd make a great pair on the court. And I have no doubts about everyone improving too!

Lets just wait and see what happens come term time .......

Hello,

I'll move to Sheffield and might be interested in playing a bit ...
Could you tell me when and where exactly you meet at the beginning of the semester to form a team? However, I don't really play that well ... so do you have only one 1st team or will there be different University of Sheffield teams playing against each other?
Cheers

Basically there will be around 10/15 basketball teams that you can play for in Sheffield University.
There is the University 1st Team, which plays in BUSA Division One against other universities around the country.
Then we have an inter mural competition where teams from every department play against each other in a league, ending in play offs & medals etc.
This year we are also bringing in competitions that were running ourselves, such as the 3 on 3 and 5 on 5's, in which you be probally able to sort your own teams.
Along with the teams, we also have the 2 hour training session on Sundays, 3-5pm, which comprises of 5 on 5 games and also this year we will be coaching too.

If thats not enough for you, Im sure I could get in contact with some of the local Sheffield teams and sort something else out to play Sheffield local league.

Basically if your a University of Sheffield Student, come to the Sports Bazaar on Thurs 23rd Sept, see me or Rich where you can sign up as a member and we'll sort you out.

If your not a student , then to be honest you'll have to look into joining a local team. The link that the last post put up should help you, and if not start a new post on Sheffield Forum.

Im not entirely sure when were gonna start sunday sessions etc, but it will prob be Sunday 26th Sept for the first set of trials etc.
The Sports Bazaar is ALL DAY THURSDAY in the Octagon Centre!
At the Sports Bazaar we’ll hand you with a slip of paper when you join with all the information you’ll need til we get running properly. But everything will be on the website!

I collected the first batch of club t-shirts today and they are AWSOME! :) I have a few sizes for people to try on before ordering their own, again we’ll take orders at the sports bazaar and at training every week til mid October! I think the price is confirmed now at £12 with profits much needed to run our club!

For those of you who have tried any of the programs on improving your vertical;
I started my own program two days ago and my calves were like rock until today. But I must admit its working as Im finding the rim getting lower and lower every time I take off. :)

Hey guys, I know a lot of you were interested in playing local league basketball but couldn't get one sorted. I'm helping to set up a local league korfball team. We play with 4 girls and 4 lads and have a venue sorted and team in a local league. Why not come along and give Korfball ago as it a mixed between basketball and netball!

We already have quite a few girls who are going to play and we are looking for lads! Korfball is a great sport so why not come along and give it a go.

--->
A new Korfball club is being set up in Sheffield and everyone is invited to come and give it a go. Korfball the Worlds only mixed sex sport and can best be described as a mix between basketball and netball. The post is 12" in the air so takes away the advantage tall basketball player get.

The best way to find out korfball is to come along to one of our training sessions and give it a go. People of any age can play (we don't have junior posts so over 15 really) so why not come along and try it out!

We welcome Beginners all year round and have a team entered in a local league so there'll be plenty of chances to play.

Training is the sports hall on Coldwell Lane, off Fulwood Road near Crosspool. We train from 7.30pm - 9.00pm on Wednesdays.

Hopefully see lots of you there!

Hey guys,

I've recently gotten a job where I've been responsible for increasing people's awareness about their online security and I found out some really interesting stuff.

http://qdos.com/qin/competition/

For example,
Did you know that 16% of people research their potential neighbours online before deciding whether or not to buy a house?

I was wondering therefore, how you feel about the internet nowadays - if your neighbour wanted to research you, would they be able to?

I've been promoting a site called QDOS, who provide people with an accurate measure of their online presence.

They've launched a competition for people to win £10000 for having the highest score (what better incentive to be safe online!)
