View Full Version : Why SKY TV will go bankrupt...
goldenfleece 27-09-2006, 09:15 1) If my local area is a good indicator, people are binning their SKY dishes by the truckload......thats three more this week in my street alone who have switched to either Freeview or old fashionaed analog TV, and ditched the old dish for good. Everywhere you go you see SKy dishes in skips and bins...there is one kicking around in the field opposite me as I speak...
2) No sattelite signal is being received.....
3) No sattelite signal is being received....AGAIN
4) No sattelite signal is being received...EVER!
5) WHy pay for 300 channels of crap when you can have 20 channels of crap for free!
princess_rockchick 27-09-2006, 09:22 Heheheheehe!
Thats rather interesting and funny.
I don't have sky, i have the wonderful and crappy freeview.
LordChaverly 27-09-2006, 09:25 I have seldom had a problem with mine, except during inclement weather (particularly heavy rain) when the picture sometimes breaks up.
Sky plus is a very good feature, enabling you to pause or rewind live TV or to record two programmes at the same time and watch another. Moreover, to record, you just need to press one button. No fiddling with disks or tapes either. You can record up to 100 hours of programmes on to the hard disk.
Blade1983 27-09-2006, 09:27 - we can't even get freeview in s26 according to their website.
- we can't get Cable - think they're waiting until after the roads and pavements have been re-surfaced, then they may come and dig them up again to put Cable in
- and we don't have a TV Arial
- so we're pretty much stuck with Sky (although we could go for the free sky option, but we pay a radicular amount a month instead)
I'd rather have telewest with TVDrive (sky+ equivalent) and the channels that I watch (sky one, ukLiving) than freeview that i'll just never watch.
Freeview is crap. Sky rules.
Sky+ is excellent.
Sky Movies and the Sports channels aren't available on Freeview.
Freeview is for cheap people who can't afford Sky.
princess_rockchick 27-09-2006, 10:05 There is one film channel on freeview, which frankly makes it a little better than it used to be and who knows channels you pay for on sky may also be on freeview someday.... It could happen.
My parents have Sky, My brother has sky. I can't be arsed to get sky at the moment. Maybe one day.
I cold live fine with just the BBC. When I was on holiday in the summer I stayed somewhere with lots of channels and found the only thing worth watching was either a repeat of an old BBC programme (or perhaps ITV such as Morse) or GemTV. GemTV is so funny it is worth watching for a few minutes a day to cheer yourself up but otherwise it all seemed like rubbish.

I can afford SKY but dont want it. Sports channels? Who need em? Not me...
Sky Movies and Box Office show nothing but the same stuff you can rent CHEAPER in your local Blockbuster..
Bye bye dish......maybe I can make a museum exhibit out of it
Try to find the latest series of the simpsons, greys anatomy, battlestar galactica, my name is earl or ER on freeview or terrestial.
You'll be disappointed.
Use series record and I don't have to worry about missing one or when they are scheduled to show, I can watch one whenever I feel like having 30 mins in front of the tele. And I can skip all the adverts.
LordChaverly 27-09-2006, 11:03 I wonder if there is any essential difference between Sky plus and the Telewest version?

I could too, more or less, if it hadn't sold off the cricket, football, racing, rugby union, etc., ....... I've refused to take the Loathsome Australian's shilling, but my hand is being forced now .......

ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! I NEED SPORTS CHANNELS!

The telewest version has an HD output, sky charge extra for an HD box I believe. Also, there are 3 tuners in the telewest box, so you can record 2 different channels whilst watching a third if you should need to.
Other than that, from what i've seen, they are essentially the same in practice if not in precise implementation.
The other key point though, would be that telewest charge much less for the box in the first place, £50 instead of £200 for the installation, and £15/month for the service.

I have freeview in S26...
Picks up about 83 channels. Although they are all pants!

I agree that Telewest is cheaper, but the range of available channels is smaller. I like some of the international news channels which you can't get on Telewest. My understanding is that Telewest channels are largely if not entirely leased from Sky anyway. You can record two channels and watch a third on Sky plus also. I switched to Sky from Telewest and don't intend to go back.

bl00dy website telling me porkies then.... mind you, it probably hasn't been updated since 2002 or something.
Phanerothyme 27-09-2006, 11:49 I don't think Sky will go bankrupt, somehow. Lots of people watch sky on Cable.
Blade1983 27-09-2006, 11:50 You can record two channels and watch a third on Sky plus also.
I have sky+ and you CAN'T do this.... you can record 2 channels at once, but if you do, you have to be watching one of the 2 channels.
it works by having 2 recievers on your dish, and 2 incoming cables - it can therefore only recieve 2 channels at once EVER.
So you could record one and watch another,
or record 2, and watch 1 of the ones you're recording
or record 2, and watch 1 you've already recorded cus that's saved on your hard disk!

Mmm, I will have to check this. I have the latest HD box, so it may be different. I thought I have done this in the past, but am not 100% sure.

I honestly don't find enough to watch without finding something else to record at the same time, but I do like Telewest for all the food and discovery channels, and the thing where you can watch a full series of something is very handy.

It's mine.
I took it down and put a pudding tin up. Guess what?
<<<<<<<<< Waits for forummers who are fed up of the same joke.
Switching to analogue would be a bad idea in about 4 years time ;)

You ought to be :hihi:
with telewest, sky++;
or maybe sky+=1;
goldenfleece 27-09-2006, 16:00 Pity nothing on worth recording though....I'll stick with Blockbuster and my DVD home cinema.......
I have too much stuff going on to watch anything on telly, except the news while I wolf my dinner. I kinda miss The Fairy Odd Parents, Monkey Dust and Invader Zim though, they were funny.with telewest, sky++;
or maybe sky+=1;++sky; so you can use it immediately!
Sky + is amazing.
People who say I dont need all those channels and half are crap anyway are missing the point
Sky plus is all about watching what YOU want to watch.
One persons crap is another persons favorite channel.
