Last night I had a dream about the millhouses park miniature railway. I seem to remember going on this as a kid ... but am not sure if it's a real memory or just one of those memories we invent. Maybe I am getting it mixed up with the one at Scarborough ...

Can anyone else remember the millhouses park miniature railway ?

If it's the one I'm thinking of it isn't actually in the park, but over the road in the woods. Opposite Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet I think. It is only open occasionally, once a month or something like that. It's brilliant - really low key and friendly. If you've got kids it's definitely worth going. They even have Santa specials at Christmas! I must find out when it's open again, I haven't been for ages.

I've been there several times, and the children love it. It's not particually buggy friendly if you have a young child though.

The best thing is you're allowed to have picnics on the central lawn, so it makes a nice cheap and enjoyable afternoon out with the children.

That miniature railway is certianly not in Millhouses !

It's in Totley (just), nearly opposite the garden centre (area wrongly called Dore).

It's on Abbeydale Road South between Dore&Totley Station and Beauchief Gardens on the opposite side.

You know when it is open as they open the gate.

The railway is open every sunday afternoon (or more??) in summer i recon and quite a few sundays in spring and autumn.

It's to the left of the A621 icon:

So that would be Abbeydale then.

erm...No

Abbeydale isn't near there.

Driving towards town it goes:
Totley (Village, then; New Totley, Totley Rise)
Beauchief
Millhouses

So why is it called Abbeydale Minature railway and it is near the Abbeydale Ind. Hamlet?

Where is Abbeydale?

Very confusing

And Abbeydale Garden centre, also Abbeydale Sports club.......

I personally consider Abbeydale to start at bottom of Woodseats Rd, but Abbeydale Road and Abbeydale Road South combined runs all the way from Highfield to Totley, where it becomes Baslow Road.

Bit outside Dore station seems to be no mans land! It isn't Dore really, as that is up Dore Road, it isn't Bradway as that is up Twentywell Lane, and it isn't quite Totley yet at that point...

On the railway it is called Dore, including the 3 junctions around the railway triangle.

Hmm, will have to look it up!

Didn't Freud saying something about dreaming about trains & tunnels & stuff?

Is Jamie dreaming about the same things - but on a smaller scale?

:D

You're almost right !

I know for a fact (addresses permitting) that Dore only starts at number 56 Abbeydale Park Rise, that means 54 (included) and below are in Totley.

The area know on the A to Z map as Abbeydale Park is in Dore as well as totley, but doesn't really exist.
although people like to put 'Dore' in their address, Dore only starts further up the hill from the Sheaf.

Totley starts at the Beauchief Gardens when Abbeydale Road South goes over the river beside the Miniature Railway. That would mean that I was wrong in my previous statement:
the miniature Rly isn't in Totley but in Beauchief.

totley starts at the Brickworks in Baslow Road, goes as far as Totley Brook (the stream behind Totley Fruit Picking) follows the Limb Brook all the way beyond the station goes up along the miniature Rly, between gardens on; Dore rd, Abb'le Pk Rs, Dev Rd, Bshy Wd Rd. along the footpath that splits King Ecgberts school in two, all the way to the stream joining (little woodden footbridge) thru the moor back to the Brickworks.
This also means that half of Totley Brook is in Dore, and the other half in Totley (even though the totley Brook stream is a mile away).

the limits between Totley and Beauchief are the same ones there were before 1934, when Dore & Totley were in Derbyshire: the little stream Limb Brook.

Also good to point out that the accurate name of the station is:
'Dore and Totley' station (I would love to see the station renamed as it once was). two junctions are Dore West and South, the third Dore (and Totley) station Junction.

For more information on the boundaries of Totley and why they are always shrinking, read Brian Edwards books on Dore and Totley.

To make things clearer as I admit, and you can too that these boundaries are very difficult to draw, so here is a scan of the A to Z with the limits drawn. You will note that Totley goes beyond the Sheffield boudaries.

To be frank, all of this is :loopy:

It must be really awful for the poor people living at the bottom end of Dore Road to find they're actually rubbing shoulders with the plebs in Totley. :D

In the cubs and scouts (remember them ?) we used to have to push a huge handcart up the path through Ryecroft Glen to a field at the top for our annual camp. I also used to go train spotting at Dore South junction to catch a glimpse of the huge Beyer-Garrett engines pulling miles of stone wagons to and from Hope valley. ISTR the signalman once gave us the approx times they'd be coming through, although a lot of it was night traffic.

It's almost opposite Beauchief Gardens, does that mean it's in Beauchief. Sorry but it certainly ain't Totley.

It's been ages since I last had a look round the place and so may very well wander up there with max. He doesn't seem to mind the full size ttrains and so it'll be interesting to see his reaction to a little hissing steam locomotive.
I'm also old enough to remember when it wasn't at Dore, Totley, Abbeydale or Beauchief, it used to be at the end of Chelsea road which is probably Brincliffe? I seem to remember there was a rrestaurant up there as well the Omega?

Formally, Dore includes all Dore Rd, and the few old houses along Abbeydale rd South back towards Sheffield with the exception of the single newer bungalow nearest the industrial hamlet on the railway side which falls into the Beauchief ward. There's a snobbish attitude around here to single storey properties ;-)

I took a wander through the woods and ended up sat looking at the trains , I think Max was quite impressed with the little diesel locomotive as it sounded just like it's full size brother.
In the woods I just had to follow the screams of two family groups kids who wanted another ride and didn't want to leave the place.
They were selling nice coffee there as well which was a nice surprise as I do enjoy my coffee.

Well you all have interesting points and it is nice to know that people enjoy going to the track.
I am infact a member of this railway and its real name is Sheffield Society of Modelling Experimental Engineers (SheffieldSmee for short). However we do call ourselves Abbeydale Miniature Railway for the public.
Our first running of 2007 is on March 11th.

I hope this answers all your questions.

P.S We used to have a temporary track at millhouses before we moved to this site 27 years ago.
