THEMike 26-09-2006, 06:19 With a TV Tuner card installed in your PC, you can use the supplied software to tune channels in and watch them in an application that should come with the card. The detailed steps for doing so should be supplied with the TV card. If however, you are not comfortable with opening up your PC and installing a peice of hardware, that's probably the wrong route to go. The suggestion from someone else was "p2p tv". Basically, this means using Peer To Peer (p2p) filesharing application to download TV shows in a compressed computer format and play them back on your TV. Legally, this is a gray area. Most of the shows people download are aired in the US and recorded by US users and shared out. It's legal under the US copyright law's "Fair Use" clauses (and tested in court following the advent of VHS and Betamax) to record a show from TV and give a copy of it to someone else to watch. i.e. John Doe can tape a show on TV in the US and give a copy to John Smith his co-worker to watch. So the filesharing of TV episodes within the US is completely legal. Now, it is also legal to buy a DVD in the US and send it to someone in the UK. Assuming any VAT is paid on import, unless it's marked as Gift and worth under a certain figure. Which I think most DVDs would come in under. So, by inference it's probably legal for someone in the US to record a TV show and give a copy to someone in the UK, so long as it's marked as a gift and worth under a certain amount (which it's bound to be). However, this hasn't been tested in a court of law, so it's a bit of a grey area. Of course the TV channels would hate this, because the downloadable episodes have all adverts removed, so the US downloaders are one less impression on their adverts, and if the UK users are downloading ahead of the air dates in the UK, that decreases the value of the show when they sell it to UK TV channels. The most common way to download TV episodes these days is via a "torrent". and I just found the post in the computer forum banning talking about where to get torrents and how to download them so I'll remove that part of the post Episodes are typically released as AVI files encoded with DivX or Xvid Codecs, so you'll need to download those codecs and a suitable media player for your computer. Winamp with the Divx and Xvid codecs installed. Of course, watching TV on your computer does suck a bit, but you can get a DVD player that supports Divx, burn the episodes onto CDs or DVDs and watch them on your big TV. I was just looking for a compact DVD player for the bedroom upstairs, and found on Ebuyer dot com they have a nice cheap small multi-region dvd player with DivX and Xvid support for £30 including delivery. Dead easy. ;-) Ghozer 26-09-2006, 09:10 or you could just use WinAmp TV, or MEdia Player TV! Theyer totally free.. also, alot of uK channels (Such as the BBC) have streaming shows via thier website Greybeard 26-09-2006, 10:21 You don't even have to open the box these days, I've seen plug-in USB Freeview tuners for around £30 complete with EPG channel selection and recording software. Edit: Like this... http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=409 medusa 26-09-2006, 10:28 We do have to point out that once your computer is set up to receive TV pictures you need a TV licence, even if you don't need a licence for any other equipment in your house. This will apply whether you use the TV facility or not- so think carefully about installing the hardware for receiving pictures. Rich 26-09-2006, 10:32 I thought p2p was peer to peer, a link over the net to others comps? Or is that a different thing  It is, but shush, the Mods don't like us talking about that kind of thing. DJ_Double_N 26-09-2006, 11:53 yes i got one of those^^^ its works really well i was just wondering if there was a way 2 get the channels you have to pay for, for free? Cynic 26-09-2006, 12:30 The suggestion from someone else was "p2p tv". Basically, this means using Peer To Peer (p2p) filesharing application to download TV shows in a compressed computer format and play them back on your TV. I think they will have meant something like PPLive. Which uses P2P technology to stream live TV channels to your computer (usually from China). As you are downloading the stream you are also uploading to someone else, very clever. marmite 27-09-2006, 21:22 yes i got one of those^^^ its works really well i was just wondering if there was a way 2 get the channels you have to pay for, for free? I think thats illegal :nono: Chances are you still can though :D lalobo 28-09-2006, 09:23 I think they will have meant something like PPLive. Which uses P2P technology to stream live TV channels to your computer (usually from China). As you are downloading the stream you are also uploading to someone else, very clever. That is right. I have a selection of these programs and you can use them to get most foriegn televsion channels. The four I use are PPLive(Mainly Chinese), PPStream(Mailnly Chinese), TVAnts(Various) and MAX TV(Mainly French). As people have probably mentioned using these are a legal grey area as you are not receiving British channels but free foreign ones. These can range from Chinese to US to French channels. |
