We all know that crossing wardens(lollipop persons) do a good job in looking after the safety of our children both on their way to and back home from school, but twice in the last few days I gave had to stop at the Grenoside end of Halifax Road, for a lollipop person, who then ushers a middle aged man and his alsation dog across the road. There are enough holdups on this road in a morning without 1 man and his dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I needed to cross the road and there was a lollipop lady then I would cross with her. This is because a) it is safer b) I don't want any children to see me ignore the crossing point and think they can do the same.

Hmm I think you should look at what other posters have said, and take into account that many a little child will see a 'grown-up' cross the road on their own and take it on themselves to try and be like the grown-up. I did so myself, and was almost run over umpteen times when I was younger. Now I have a fear of crossing roads.

I think its a bit insensitive of you to say that this person shouldn't be allowed to cross with the lollypop person. If the services were available, I would use a lollypop person to cross the road everytime.

you may not agree with me, but the people crossing the children are insured only to cross children, not adults and dogs,

Is this right? Sounds doubtful but I don't know.

Well what you want to do then, is when it happens again.
Go and park the car up and have a word with the lollipop person.
If they disagree with you, Get intouch with the police and tell them whats happend. And by the time they have sorted it all out 'You will be two hours late for work' insted of 30 seconds.

'lollipop' persons can now use their sticks to help other people across the road. The lollipop is a proper stop sign enforcable by law. the black area is to write down the car reg of any car that runs through (they should carry some chalk in their pockets!). obviously lollipop persons at pedestrian controlled crossings dont need to carry a stick (although i think they should carry a whip with them at all times to controll unruly kids:P

Thats right, when I did this job a few years ago, I was told only to help children cross the road. I didn't think this was right though, and still helped some people to cross mainly the elderly and disabled. We have a pedestrian controlled crossing there now so no need for a lollipop person.

FFS - I can't believe someone can get so wound up over such a trivial matter.

Next time the crossing lady stops the traffic for me to cross the road, after walking my daughter to school, I will make a point of stopping to have a chat with her half way over :) Now THAT should wind you up!

When was the last time you saw a lolly person?

Glad to know there's so much support out there.

Just to confirm the facts - the law changed in 2001 to allow School Crossing Wardens to stop the traffic to help anyone (child or adult) to cross the road whether or not they are travelling to and from school.

As most of you agree - its a really important job...anyone interested in being a 'lollipop person' can telephone 273 5818 for more details. We have vacancies across the city for permanent and reserve wardens.

After all it would be a shame if the lady on Halifax Road was off and no-one was there to cross the gentleman and his dog!
