Hi,
I passed Encliffe Park the other day and noticed a lot of activity around the memorial near Rustlings Road. There was two big lorries, about 8 metal containers, generators etc. It appears they have dug a shallow pit about 30ft square and 10 inches deep, again near to the railings backing onto Rustlings Road.

Just wondered if anyone knew what was going on? Surely they're not building a paddling pool or something - though that would be nice on a day like today!

Cheers,

Pete

if only!
It's a Yorkshire Water thing where they are building a sort-of storage tank to hold drain water in busy periods. It (apparently) stops the Porter from being polluted. There's a similar one going in Hillsborough Park at the moment.

They are upgrading or building a new sewer system to prevent problems with the river flooding, or something like that. There was a bit about it in the Sheffield Telegraph last week. The cafe owner is moaning about it complaining about the disruption. But if it's essential maintenance I guess it's got to be done.

That's right, I saw the article in the Sheffield Telegraph. I think they are doing similar work at Millhouses Park.

Oh right. Makes sense anyway.

I remember on the day that Princess Diana died - 31 Aug 1999? it was absolutely ripping it down and the Porter was virtually over-flowing. The current as it passed through Endcliffe Park was incredible. Never seen it that bad before. As you can imaging Hunters Bar roundabout was flooded too and water was actually going into the shops. Really strange thing to witness.

Even more of an eyesore in Encs. at the moment is the vast amount of junk strewn on the grass and in the trees by happy picnic-ers, including the empty carrier bags that they could use to
take away their tins, cups, bottles, preformed sarny packs and disposable barbecues. The grass looks wonderful with all those burnt squares. Never mind litter fines in the city centre let's have them for the parks.

I think they are doing works to improve the sewers/drainage systems.

Dunno about the Spar.

those diggers and containers have been there for about a month now, no idea why.

I think there's been aprevious thread on this.
It is a major drains upgrade in the park. Riverdale Road is also going to be closed for 3 months (that'll be a nightmare with the students back and the school holidays over)

The Spar is having a refit. It makes economic sense to do it now with the City half empty of people

Hmm an interesting point. What sounds best?
The City is half full of students.

most annoying thing about students
1- they think they know everything or invented everything
2- they walk and read at the same time - so getting in the way (seen alot of this aorund west street)

so they would say - The city is for students

In a way they'd be right.

I'd hazard a guess that the Uni and Hallam together with their staff and students contribute far more to Sheffield's economy than what's left of a manufacturing industry.

Please can someone tell me what an earth they are doing to Endcliffe Park? They have just laid Tarmac on a large part of it!!!!

The council should try tarmaccing Rustlings Road before it becomes a death trap for cyclists and pedestrians. (Its horrendous enough already)

I take you mean all the stuff happening in one corner of the park? They're doing some work on the drains all round the area and using that area to create a temporary compound or something. I think there's another thread somewhere that explains it a bit better than that though. They'll be finished in spring apparently.

I've just driven past Endcliffe Park for the first time in a while and was surprised to see a large chunk of it dug up. Does anybody know what is being built there?
