Hi my sister will be getting her kitten next week, he is just over 6wks old, and I am paying for his injections and also to have him chipped, I am registering him at Highfields Vets. Can anyone tell me what age he needs to be neutured, and chipped, also when his first injections would be due? Hope you can advise me on this matter, Thanks.

I assume you mean chipped rather than tagged?

He'll need his first jabs at about 9-10 weeks (assuming he's a strong healthy kitten- later if he's a bit underweight) and his second set 15 days later.

I'd highly recommend that you get him vaccinated against Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) as well as cat flu and enteritis (the normal Tricat only covers against these two). FeLV is a nasty incurable disease and most cats catching it die a nasty death from cancer within a year of catching the virus.

You can get him microchipped as soon as he's big enough- probably combining it with the second visit for jabs would be about right, cos he'll be just that little bit bigger.

The normal time for them to be neutered is 6 months, and it's a good idea for them not to go outside at all before their jabs, and only accompanied until he's neutered (if he hits puberty before he's neutered he's likely to follow his hormones after a girlie cat and get beaten up by a bigger and stronger tom).

While you're taking him to the vets, don't forget about flea and worming products that are suitable for little ones- the ones from the vets do the job much better than the ones from pet shops and are safe in the doses they prescribe.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may get.

Oh, and just to finish, a couple of milestones for you- the eyes are usually their final colour sometime between 8 and 10 weeks, and they usually lose their kitten fangs when they're about 5-5 and 1/2 months.

Thanks for your advice, one more thing though, when I go to collect him I am taking a blanket with me that is going to line his basket, I am thinking of rubbing blanket on kittens mum so that he will have her scent maybe it will help him settle, do you think this is a good idea?

That would be a very good idea, as would getting him a mum-sized teddy to snuggle up to in his basket/bed/wherever he's going to sleep (they look so lost in a full sized bed all by themselves).

Another thing to bear in mind is that when they're really small they aren't very good at regulating their body temperature so a hot water bottle at just over body temperature is a good plan for cold nights too (ideally one of the microwave ones so that if it gets a puncture the room won't get too soggy).

You're doing all of the right things flashbang- with a loving home that's preparing well for their arrival I think you'll have a lovely little monster growing quickly in no time!

Collected kitten today and took him straight to my sisters, he had a good nosey round rubbing his chin on everything he made contact with.
He ate some food and had a drink before settling into his basket complete with cuddly toy. He is sooooo gorgeous, the good thing is I live opposite my sister so I get to see kitty everyday. He has been christened with the name Poppet.

My sister rang me a couple of minutes ago, she said she had found a flea on Poppet. Is there any treatment for fleas that can be used on a tiny kitten?
I would have thought sis would have been in bed by now, but she wants some time on her own getting to know Poppet whilst kids are in bed Ahhhhh.

Most animals can be treated for fleas after they reach 12 weeks old. Probably best to get treament from the vets though.

I would like to say a big thank you to Pet_walkiz, for letting me know about kittens that needed homes, without her help we wouldn't have got Poppet.

THANK YOU

Well its been nearly a year since my sister got her cat Poppet.
We are a little concerned for his safety at the moment because he is not afraid of anything. He has attacked 3 dogs two of them bull terriers and a German Shepherd. He also jumps on humans and clings on their heads this has happened to a couple of workmen from the council, he doesn't scratch or anything he is quite happy just clinging on until he decides to get off.

Where dogs are concerned though he runs up to them and starts to attack, the dogs run off with Poppet at their heels. We are worried that he may meet his match and get hurt. This only happens when he manages to escape out of the house because he is an indoor cat. All the neighbours know him and bring him back when he does escape. Why does he do this? :help:

Ah yes- this is the 'is my kitten demonic?' moment. It happens to all cat owners at about this point in their mog's life.

All young cats think that they're invincible, and toms are invariably worse than queens. Compare this to the behaviour of a teen yob lad and you'll have a pretty good comparison. He's at just about the worst stage for this at the moment and he should start to learn a few manners soon.

All I can suggest is to try to teach him what's acceptable and what isn't (and be consistent with it- it may be funny but it's not acceptable behaviour) and he'll get the message sooner or later. Hopefully he'll get the message about attacking dogs when one of the dogs he tries it on shows him it's unwelcome but without hurting him.

Flashbang, my little tom cat is still like that at 8 years old and my queen at 12, it's what they do and they will do it more if they know it bothers you:hihi:

My mums old cat, Jimmy, beat up a (luckily) friendly Rottie when he was the tender age of 15, he was attatched to the poor dogs face with all 4 paws when he realised what he was doing and it was a tedious procedure removing him without causing further damage to the dog or allowing the dog to bite him.

Cats thrive on causing their loved ones to go to an early grave through heart failure, but we love them all the same and would never be without them no matter how many stupidly dangerous and hair raising things they get up to :)

Good luck with the little man and I hope he doen't give you or your sister a nervous breakdown:hihi:

We used to have neighbours who owned 2 gorgeous huge fluffy ginger toms - one called Beast and one called Wimp - both aplty named- Beast could often be see nchasing German Shepherd Dogs and any sort of dog down the street whereas Wimp stuck to the background. In our house, Alfie the barmy bengal often instigates play fights with our daft doberman Ailsa - he bites Ailsa's ears, bum or anything else to hand in the hope she will get giddy and give chase. I'd hate to see Alf try that with a strange dog he managed to squeeze out of the window and leaped 8foot to chase and attack another cat outside- fortunately I managed to give chase too and prised him off the poor thing- he doesnt seem to comprehend that other cats are allowed out and he's not.
