My cat who is nearly 17 has had problems with his teeth for a few years, whan he was 15 the vet said he might not get through the operation if he pulled them out, so he has kept having different medicine and tablets.

Anyway Thursday night it flared up he was slavering and his mouth was realy swollen, and he was howling in pain so at 1-0am,we took him to the emergency vet down Attercliffe, thats the one our vets answer machine sent us too, she gave him an anti biotic injection and said to take him back to our vet.

Well our vet has now decided the teeth have got to come out, he's only got three left, as soon as the swelling goes down but i'm realy scared hes 2 years older now so will he be ok with the anesthetic, and I'm worried what this infection might have done to him, at the moment hes on pain killers and anti biotic and seems to be fine, and hes a big strong cat, any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Oh just a word of warning if you need the emergency vet they charge £99.00,
plus any treatment payable immediately, his bill was £120.00.

It sounds like one of those situations where your poor cat is really suffering. If he doesn't come out of the anesthetic, you've done all you possibly can to help him, but it's in the hands of the gods :(

If he's so fit and strong, it's likely he will pull through, but how can you cope with watching him suffer longer?

By the sounds of it hun you dont have a choice. Tooth ache is the worst kind of pain and in the end he wont be able to eat cos of the pain.

I'm not sure you have a choice on this one- the poor mite sounds in desperate pain. It doesn't sound like he's going to have much of a life if you don't put him through the risk of the operation. I have everything crossed that he's strong and fit enough to withstand a few whiffs of gas (taking teeth out is a very quick proceedure, for what it's worth).

I'm in a similar situation with one of mine at the moment. She's 14, and has fairly major heart problems. She's developed a tumour on her back, and basically whether it's benign or malignant makes no difference- she wouldn't survive the anaesthetic to have it removed, so I'll just cross my fingers that it's slow growing and doesn't cause her pain.

He's booked in next monday to have them out, just feel realy awful now thinking he's probably been in pain for ages,but its always the same with animals they dont seem to be able to let you know until its realy bad, I'll let you know how he goes on, he's been a realy fit and healthy cat all these years so just hope this sees him through.

When I was a teen we had a cat in the same boat. I hate to put a downer on your hopes so i wont go into details but not all cases are the same.
Cats dont complain much do they? They can go through hell without showing it.

awwww i really hope your cat gets better - one of my old cats had gingivitis and lost teeth (they just fell out!) and he was able to eat anything still - specially wafer thin ham ;)

Our cat was 15 and had teeth removed due to gingivitus, she was not even very tough but she came through the op fine! I really wouldnt worry about it at all, just be prepared to mash the food up a lot afterwards as they struggle eating anything big!

A cat i met a couple of years ago 13 or 14 got savaged by a dog made a right mess she lost her leg but pulled through she 16 now and still going strong.

Just had a call from the vets, they,ve got a cancellation for Thursday, so I'm taking him them instead of next Monday, just want to get it over with.

my old cat was 16 when she had her remaining teeth taken out. She ended up with none! Was fine though and used to eat a can of cat food a day.:thumbsup:
