View Full Version : Do you feel safe at home, abroad, in the street?
okka north 24-09-2006, 17:55 Do you feel safe in your home at night?
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night?
Do you feel safe when you go abroad?
Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen?
When did things change? Why is it years ago we lived are lives care free and now we have worries about about our safety? Will it always be like this?
Or do you feel perfectly safe?
Plain Talker 24-09-2006, 17:59 Never been abroad...
however,
yes I feel safe when trekking around where I live,
I feel reasonably safe when in my home, although I don't throw caution to the wind, as I do keep my door locked, to prevent anyone "sneak-thieving". I don't believe in giving a thief an easy-chance.
JPMiddleton 24-09-2006, 18:06 I do feel safe at home yes.
Do I feel safe walking the streets? Yes.
Probably because I dont go near areas that would be considered as dodgy. Though the city centre has its moments, i generally dont have any issues, Manchester on the other hand is a different story. Newcastle is probably the best ive experienced.
Out of the few places ive been abroad.. I probably felt a little uneasy at 5am wandering down the red light district in Amsterdam, being offered all sorts of chemicals..:o
fox20thc 24-09-2006, 18:10 Do you feel safe in your home at night? Definately
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? Most of the time
Do you feel safe when you go abroad? never been
Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen?
No, people shouldn't be so paranoid.
Or do you feel perfectly safe? Usually
Do you feel safe in your home at night? Yes
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? 99% of the time
Do you feel safe when you go abroad? Totally depends on where I am, pretty broad question. In my travelling round the world I only felt unsafe twice really, once in New York and once in San Francisco. I felt fine in Washington DC and Philadelphia though. It's all relative to what happens whilst you are there
Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen?
Some people do, but I don't think people should live their lives that way.
Or do you feel perfectly safe? Usually yes.
Jabberwocky 24-09-2006, 18:20 I feel very safe where i live now. The biggest crime that happens here is when some bugger parks at the bus stop.
Actually its safe bordering on boring.

Swan_Vesta 24-09-2006, 18:28 Q Do you feel safe in your home at night? A. Totally, I have a sturdy door with two locks which I prove along with the downstairs windows every night. For any toerag with the initiative to get past that lot I have a nice surprise waiting for them should they make it as far as our bedroom.
Q Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? A. I'm always alert when I'm out and about, especially at night but am sufficiently 'handy' to wander about with confidence
Q Do you feel safe when you go abroad? A. God I wish - Not had a holiday in nearly 8 years :(
Q Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen? A. I think that you have to be prepared, never leave your property in a state where it can be breached, yourself in a position where you have no means of escape or without refuge. I'm not worried about these things because I don't believe in generating the circustances where you can be compromised.
Gadgetgirl 24-09-2006, 18:34 Do you feel safe in your home at night? Yes definitely
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? Sometimes, there are some areas I wouldn't walk in the daytime let alone at night
Do you feel safe when you go abroad? Yes, generally.
mickdalewood 24-09-2006, 18:47 i would not swap where i live for nothin i love where i live nice people etc
Godzilla 24-09-2006, 19:16 Do you feel safe in your home at night? Yes - I've got three dogs.
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? - Pretty much. I try to keep my wits about me and avoid places that are not well lit. However, tonight I will be venturing across a dark field at about 11.30pm so that dogs can attend to late night needs of nature. I will have a torch and a loud scream!
Do you feel safe when you go abroad? Yes. Same rules apply. Be alert and avoid strange men aimlessly wandering about with stubble and open raincoats!
Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen? Something might happen - and it might be something good!
When did things change? Why is it years ago we lived are lives care free and now we have worries about about our safety? Will it always be like this? I was carefree because I didn't know there was so much to worry about.
Or do you feel perfectly safe? I feel safe, but I'm not complacent. I feel more at risk riding my motorbike on the disintigrating road surfaces in Sheffield.
Yes I feel safe in my home.
Yes I feel safe walking the streets at night.
Yes I feel safe abroard,
The only place I haven't felt safe was South Africa.
Didn't like the dea of having to live behind electric fencing.

HypnoToad 24-09-2006, 19:25 I feel safe in UK, but safer abroad.

I used to live somewhere like that, never knew how much I'd miss it
Jabberwocky 24-09-2006, 19:39 I used to live somewhere like that, never knew how much I'd miss it
Its like... you know when the oldies say you could leave your doors unlocked at night and no one would nick anything? Its like that here, its like being stuck in a bloody time warp. The kids are polite and... its like the stepford wives. Ill go insane one of these days and paint big winkys on the smug buggers cars.
Lol jabbers, even the place where i used to live isn't like that anymore! Enjoy it mate, places like that are becoming few and far between
i feel that the more vunerable should be allowed guns as a detterent.
Patrick1346 25-09-2006, 05:56 i feel that the more vunerable should be allowed guns as a detterent.
Can you expand on that?
Do you feel safe in your home at night?
Yup
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night?
Yes but I do keep a watchful eye on my surroundings.
Do you feel safe when you go abroad?
Don't go abroad much but same as the last answer.
Being a fairly stocky fella I don't tend to look at easy target although I'm aware I'm not invincible and one day some idiot might try their luck so I try to stay aware of what's going on around me if possible. I have been known to walk around with my mind elsewhere at times as many of us do so one day I might get unlucky.
It's a shame that we have to think like that though. WOuld be nice to be able to go out knowing, not hoping or assuming that nothing dodgy will happen to you.
Abroad is a pretty big place, surely it would depend on where and when you are?
I feel safe at home and in most places walking about in sheffield.
Do you feel safe in your home at night? Yes the door is pretty solid and I'm pretty anonymous as far as the scrotey neighbours are concerned.
Do you feel safe walking the streets at night? Yes, but I know the area very well
Do you feel safe when you go abroad? On the whole, yes. The dogsledding in Finland was a bit scary however
Do we face a life where, in the back of our minds, something might happen? Something always might happen and it has ever been so
When did things change? Why is it years ago we lived are lives care free and now we have worries about about our safety? Will it always be like this?
Or do you feel perfectly safe?
I reckon I'm safe, but not complacent
YakQueudrue 25-09-2006, 12:16 I feel perfectly safe walking around my neighbourhood at any time of the day. I've never felt threatened in any way whilst abroad either, wether it be New York or the South of France.
As long as you keep your wits about you or are extremely unlucky, trouble can be avoided where ever you are.
surely 'feeling safe' is just an illusion, lets face it you just don't know if an asteroid is coming to get you or if a gas leak is occuring or if your best mate is going to have a psychotic event.
feeling safe is just about fudging all the little niggles which doesn't actually effect any patterns that will lead to your demise.
if you can accept you could die any minute then you can calmly assess what you can do to improve survival with all the possibilities/risks you can detect.... or you can bury your head in a belief about being safe.
chris@25 25-09-2006, 13:05 I feel safe in UK, but safer abroad.
Reminds me of last year when I'd been in Barcelona for the weekend, wandered around the place inebriated all night (i.e., out drinking to 5am) and never felt remotely threatened and didn't have any trouble with the infamous pick pockets, went out down London Rd the day after I got back and was threatened for no special reason by an agressive drunk while trying to get a taxi at a mere 11pm (his mate dragged him off telling him he didn't want to spend another night in the cells).
What a nice welcome back to England...

Aaah drinking on the streets of Barcelona till 5am!! I've done that a few times and no, not once have I felt threatened.
Is Barcelona not just the greatest weekend break destination ever!!
zippydude 25-09-2006, 13:16 I feel safe in sheffield because i dont walk around the dodgy places.
I feel safe walking the streets at night, see above.
I feel safe abroad because you'll find me in a Spanish bar and not the foot hills of afganistan.
Things changed 9/11 or (depending where your from) 11/9 2001. what did the 'poeple of the west' do to deserve that.
I think Sheffield's pretty safe on the whole. Coming from London you note a massive change in attitude. There if you take a wrong turn you can end up in some really nasty pockets
you got to watch out for these mussers
