Last night's Star carried an article demonstrating that Sheffield would benefit -even if the next Games were held in Paris.
It's based on research by Sheffield Hallam University and commissioned by UK Sport.
The report -surprise,surprise -shows that we gain £7 for every £1
of Lottery funding.
Richard Caborn asserts that even if the Games were held in Paris, Sheffield would gain financially adding "The city could sell itself as a satellite base for a Paris Olympics because the two were not far apart in travelling times".
Now I am sure our Minister for Sport is only keeping the flag flying but I suspect geography is not his strong point.Currently Tinsley and the Royal Hallamshire are no great distance but has he tried to catch a bus there this past week.
By "satellite base" I wonder if he means that Sheffielders could watch the Paris-based Olympics on their tellys.
It seems difficult to believe that Sheffield would gain a single Euro
if local folks travelled to watch the Games in Paris -even if the buses were running by then.
