Hello ken, at the minute i quite like the flexibility of the current arrangement and sometimes i don't mind paying a little bit more if there isn't that many of us, i think when you start block booking you start having to try and fill the places, at the minute its just very casual and its first come first served (no pun intended) and i like that :D

Yep linda you can come along any time, like I mentioned in the text. Tuesday night has been a 'regular' night for a while, but I've got to pull out after this week for a while I think due to other commitments.

If anyone fancies another night then I'll come along, or maybe trundle on down to see Ken at the concord on weds nights.


Ken, I don't see a problem with the block booking of courts, but I am unsure of our ability to fill them right now. I've got to pass for the next few weeks myself and I know others are away sometime soon. You mentioned yourself and three others, add to that a random number from the 6-9 players we have had playing in the past and do you think it is enough to cover two courts for two sessions?

That said unless we change the structure slightly we aren't going to get many more players as we don't book the courts and therefore have the opportunity to increase the numbers. I think it's worth a try as it doesn't tie anyone down to committing to every session (keeping Scott's beloved flexibility) providing there are sufficient numbers to cover costs overall.

What do people think?

The keyword in the present arrangement is "flexibility"
And since most of play just for pleasure, I think it suits us all.

Having said that, people who are serious about improving their game or taking it to the next level would benefit from Ken's suggestion.

I think block-booking a few courts would be a more sensible way forward.

While the flexible, turn up system has worked in the past, I've noticed that we seem to find people who turn up for 1 or 2 games and then never appear again. I though that this down to perceived skill level and part to the constant changing of the court quantity and the 'hassle' of piping up on this thread.

If Ken can bring his beginner group, and the usual Tuesday night regulars continue turning up then I think block booking might be worth it. Certainly worth trialling for a few weeks or so.

May be we should come up with some core ethos of the group so we can decide our direction?
Fun & casual / more of a social occasion through badminton / regular games open to anyone / any other ideas?
As with all other public schemes, maybe we can have a little pilot with the fix nights suggestions?

For myself, I would quite like the "no burden, just for fun" element.
Don't know if a block booking of 2 courts + a floating extra court each time depends on interest level, with a deadline say each Fri will do or not?

I started off with casual bookings nearly 3 years ago playing at Ponds Forge, Goodwin and Hillsborough. From experience I've found that the *majority* (not everyone) think that things work better when there is predictability (block booking/fixed price) ... and it's certainly easier to manage when the number of players in the group increases. (You also need to take account of the inevitable "no shows" If someone reserves a place and then can't make it at the last minute, do you charge? I don't, but fixed price helps to cover costs over a period of time without those who do show up feeling like they're covering someone else's costs)

As you haven't closed off your group to new players ie you're still using the Forum to promote the club, I'm guessing you'd still like the club to grow while keeping it fun, friendly and sociable. Any club (rather than group of friends) does have some degree of organisation for the benefit of everyone.

My interest in this is accommodating the beginners who occasionally come along and then drop out because they're not getting a decent game with players of a similar standard. My guess is you'll have already had a similar experience and I was wondering whether between us we could find a way to keep novice players involved until they make progress to "average" club standard (or better!)

Maybe not yet, but possibly in the near future (it all depends on numbers) I'll be looking to make a block booking (possibly just one court initially) at Hillsborough on Tuesday evenings. With the numbers you already have, and if you did decide we could work together on this, maybe we could make this block booking now? If one or more of you would like to take ownership of this then that would be fine - I'd be happy to refer players to yourself (including a link from my website) in return for referrals to our Wednesday night games at Concord!

I won't be around tomorrow, but you'll be sure to discuss this between yourselves and let me know what you think ...

I've played regularly for the last 5 years and specialise in doubles, as singles is just too knackering. Would I fit in ok?

Next Tuesday is most likely the next certain meeting.
I should state that while we aren't a club and therefore it's a casual approach to playing there are some very good clubs out there if you are looking for that sort of thing. Several are mentioned in this thread (I know it's a long one) if you have 5 mins to scroll back and get the details, and in fairness you should think about trying them as well. at 8:30 pm. We have two courts booked, again it's for two 45 minute sessions. the cost is £31 for the courts so if we say 10 people again (as that seemed to work well) it'll be around 3 quid each.

I've got some shuttles and a spare racquet for those that might like to borrow one, it isn't great but it'll do :)

If you fancy coming along then let me know on this thread, via a PM or a text. I'll look into getting three courts somewhere for the week after (27th) if we are hitting our 10 person limit again this week as I don't want to exclude anyone else who wants to come along.

What do you guys think, 10 was a random number that I thought we'd try out. If we go for more players that's fine it becomes a little cheaper but you might not get as many games.

I think 12 would be a good number for a session like what we had the last tuesday. :) Anyone thinks otherwise ? Having said that, i wont be able to make it the next tuesday anyway since i will be away in london ..

PS but then...i don't like to leave people on the side, so we could be more this time but spread us over the city next time if it's necessary....

I think 12 will be good coz normally there will be some no shows esp at the start.

I see other people have posted similar requests and the usual response is to read through the thread and find your own answer. It's now 30 pages long and I'm lazy in the extreme (apart from on a badminton court obviously).

Anyway I'm waffling now.

The point is that I'd love to join a Badminton group that plays midweek (tue/wed/thur) and plays in the centre of Sheffield (ponds forge would be the best because I'm already a FitnessUnlimited member).

It would also be great if it was straight after work. Say 6pm until 8pm.

Does one currently exist? If not I wouldn't be opposed to organising one if the demand is there.

My old group used to play at Waltheof and we were eventually worn down by cars getting broken into and crap facilities. I'm sure I could guarantee at least 4 people every week of a fairly good standard but experience tells me that you need at least ten commited people to sustain the bookings.

Yeah the thread is getting pretty damn unwieldy now, might be time to switch to a new one.

As for other groups, I know Spinac (Ken) runs one over at the concorde sports centre (off the top of my head) and I remember at least two others somewhere along the thread. My suggestion if you can't cope with 30 pages (and who can) would be start a new thread asking for details of other clubs. I think you'll find that 4-6 players will keep a court nice and busy, so I wouldn't worry about not getting thousands just yet :D

I'd be up for some badminton straight after work tho mate :)


As for Tuesday I guess the only way we'll know if it will or won't work with 12 is if we try it. Let's say we'll try 12 this week (sorry Carme). So Vince and Lee (Aaron's friend) can have a place if they still want it as they have already expressed an interest.

actually, there are two spaces left!

ross turned 30 last weekend, the ageing process kicked in straight away, effected his bone structure and he managed to hurt his ankle by just walking across the street...everyone turning 30 out there: beware!

as you need both hands to use the crutches, he cannot hold the badminton bat and therefore won t come.

I had my 30th in Jan and so far so good ! Guess I drank adequate milk & eat loads of veg. help...

i'm still in one piece too...I turned 30 last august...

if food really helps....that would explain it!
