I just joined today and saw this thread and I am very interested in coming a long and playing. I go to Ponds Forge 3 times a week but I drive so I am flexible. Please let me know when the next meet is and I would love to come along and play.

I am also a member at Ponds Forge, and if you like a game of Badminton there sometime you can count me in! Weekends would be preferrable, as I get a discount there on weekends. I am an average player - not a newbie, but not a champ either. If you plan a game sometime, you can count me in!

With apologies to those of you who manage to check your forum more often than I do:

It looks like we have a regular Tuesday evening 8:30pm session at Hillsborough Leisure Centre.

There are also games being organised saturdays (See Mandarin, Jen and Wendy)

On Tuesday's we meet in the leisure centre just outside the foyer that leads to the main sports hall. This is NOT the main reception foyer it's a little further down. The magic ladies on reception can point you in the right direction. I usually lurk around at the bottom of the steps that lead up to the gym/cafe area and tend to get there around 8:15 to get changed and get ready to play for 8:30


I have two courts booked for this week so the more the merrier.

On the subject of feeling a bit of a beginner, I sympathise with how you must be feeling Visky, but don't worry, we are a friendly bunch who talk a much better game than we play. By all means come along and watch, but you might as well bring your racket because one will probably be thrust into your hand
anyway :)

Just to avoid a bit of confusion with Sandeep/Jen's Sat games I'll try to list who is coming, I'm aiming for a MAX of 6/court so it'll be first come first served (no pun intended). If 6/court is unworkable then I'll get more courts, it's a work in progress thing ;)

Cost per court is 7.60 and it's divided (as much as my maths allows) between those who are playing. I think watchers can avoid payment :)

hi sorry didnt make last night ,havent checked forum for while and forgot.

A good run out was had last night, we managed to play for a good while, the downside of which was that I couldn't book courts for next week straight away.

I phoned this morning but the computers system was down, when it eventualyl came back up (2pm) the slots had gone, and the best I can get is a SINGLE court for 7:45pm.


Soooooo, it'll be limited to 6 players I'm afraid for next week unless we know of another venue that can get us a couple of courts sometime?

Does It Matter That Im Rubbish?

Hell no, in fact, that virtually qualifies you to come along!

There a re a couple of good players but the rest of us range from average to rubbish as well. It's a fun way to play some sport, not really the next olympic feeder event so it's a laugh more and a compete less style of play.


Places are filled for this week sadly as I could only book a single court, but I shall try to get two for the 28th so we can take a whole bunch more folks.

hey was just wondering if u guys would give feathered shuttles a go?...opinions are most welcomed....wat do u ppl think of it and stuff..... :)

whats the differance?

in my opinion, it has a much better flight and it feels a lot better when ur playing with feathered shuttles.......drop shots are much more effective and u can send the shuttle a lot higher and further back.....also the shot feels good when u land a smash......those are some of the perks....but saying all dat....it cost a whole lot more than the plastics ones and they don last very long... :P

There's been many an argument over the years about what shuttles to use, I don't mind either way. I'd be happy to play with the feathered ones if someone has a few they can bring along?

The last of mine got destroyed on Thursday when I was playing with a amte. Like Aaron says, dropshots and smashes tend to be where I notice the difference most. The 'feel' of them is more positive on the racquet I think.

But they don't last long, plastic outlasts them everytime so for value for money for just knocking around plastic everytime....

I've got TWO courts booked for 8:30 next week so we should be able to get a good number of people playing. Last time we had some doubles and some singles.

We've got players of all skill levels, you don't need to have your own racquet as we've got spares.

i think yesterday s badminton session revealed that there is high potential for mandarin to become a beauty therapist. he managed to hit me in such a way that i ended up with a bit of a black eye which makes me look like i applied long-term eye shadow. perfect!

well it was one of those situations that we encountered when we kept running into each when we're on the same team.....but sandeep was a lil more...errr...atheletic???...coz when we run into each other we tend to avoid getting hit....but sandeep charged into the shot...extended his racket and....wham....straight into jen's face...hehehe.... :P

Hillsborough Badminton Club is currently looking for experienced players to play mixed and mens social badminton on Thursday evening, 7.30 - 10.00 in the upstairs hall of the church on Carlton Road, Middlewood, Sheffield 6 - not far from the Sheffield Wednesday ground.
One court with a sprung wooden floor. £2.00 an evening for the first three evenings, slightly less if paid per term.
The club is fairly traditional with play at a reasonable standard.
Some of the older players have previously played at league level for various Sheffield badminton clubs.

Last week I booked two courts as the numbers had been going up but there were only 4 of us who played so that cost me, therefore this week it'll only be one court (they have already booked out the others) I'd like to play no more than 6 so can anyone wanting the remaining place contact me as soon as poss, cheers. I kinda dropped u guys a note quite some time back. I guess i will be in sheffield somewhere end of Jan 2007. Would love to join u guys ... I am very much a beginner though. Few bruises caused by shuttles wont stop me i suppose .. :)

You are more than welcome to come along, we've got some good players in Twiggmeister, Mandarin and Aaron_Sam, then some of us who play better and worse depending on the weather and some who are still learning and improving. The only way you'll improve is by playing better players, and you are very welcome.

Probably got a couple of weeks left before xmas when I guess we'll break till the new year. Keep one eye on this forum and my mobile is around on the thread if you want to get in touch outside of the web.

Like I said if we get a more regular number of seven or eight going it'll be worth paying for two courts, but at 7,60 each, we need to be sure of numbers. We could always play other nights if someone wants to organise it?

My whole body's still aching from the over exercises. I blame madanrin for showing me the supermarket. Carrying tons of stuffs uphill was a pain.

i was in my mates car heading towards city from granville road......my mate was like..look there..that guys got a whole load of shopping stuff....i was like..hey..dats steve...my word...u did some shopping at morrisons......:P
