Can anybody remember Hyde Park Dog Track, and also the regular people that went there, for instance people who went to spectate or people that had dog's running there, for instance David Naughton, his brother Shaun, Mark Booth and the book maker called Roy Lindop, and Paddy Naughton who used to go there.

Never went there but knew a chap called Birtles who ran dogs there in the 70s.

Wasn't there was also a dog track in Darnall, - somewhere near Kettle Bridge ?

CHAIRBOY

Yes, Darnall was a licensed track, Hyde Park was a 'flapping' track. Owlerton, licensed, is the only one remaining. Clarks was the bookies at Hunter's bar - up the stairs to the right!

Did not know about Darnall when did it close?

CHAIRBOY
24-09-2006, 17:02
Darnall greyhound racetrack was just behind the old Parkway Market. It
was more or less at the end of Poole Road, when Poole Road was half the
length that it is now. The current A-Z has a roundabout at the junction
of Acres Hill Lane and Poole Road; that is more or less on the site of
the greyhound track, as far as I can judge from here!

The above is from someone else's thread. It doesn't give a date of closure but confirms its existence. I went there with my dad and it wasn't open when I was 18, so I'd guess at late 50's?

Little Hobo

Not a teddybear it was a blue & white smurf thrown from the back of the 375yds trap by certain not so good looking david, cost me a fortune as I was bookmaking there at the time and a dog called Lilo (who no one had backed)had got the race well and truly sewn up,and I had laid a dog called Pretty Purse for a fortune but had to return all the stakes because the race was classified as void.

Hi Stagecoach, Just found your post while googling for Hyde Park Dog Track. In the 1940's , I lived in Whites Lane, Wybourn, and as a very young boy often went with a crowd of pals to the dog track, where we climbed the exterior wall, then sat and watched the dogs and the spectators, till we were chased off by the track security. On the "spare ground" up from the dog track, was where crowds of men used to gather to play "pitch and toss", gambling what seemed huge amounts to me, on throwing a couple of pennies in the air, and occasionally if we were lucky, we'd earn a few pence acting as an outer ring of lookouts for the adult lookouts, watching for the inevitable police raids ! There was also, near Warris place, a quarry (or a huge bomb crater), where in about 1947 after very heavy snowfalls, the "bigger" boys organised Anderson Shelter rides (a curved section of a dismantled Anderson shelter acting as a giant sledge) down into the quarry, 2 bigger lads steering, and 6 or 7 of us nippers as passengers ! Wonderful memories. One of the older lads was my uncle Harry (Gill) who lived on the Wybourn all his life. I'd love to see your photos of the dog track if you can find time, as I've no Photos at all from the early part of my life on the Wybourn.:)

I remember once in the 70s somebody stuck a pretty well known dog from Owlerton called Lakewood Drive in a race under another name.It won by a mile but unfortunately the cops had got wind of it & stood by the bookies waiting to collar anybody who had backed it.Unsurprisingly, nobody dare go & collect their winnings. It was quite funny really.

I lived at 66 derwent row in 81 and 82 and our balcony overlooked the dog track - it was wonderfully decrepit - decaying corrugated asbestos (i think), ancient bulb lamps hanging from wires, filthy concrete terraces - went there a few times and loved it. knocked down early 80s probably - a lovely old health hazard
