View Full Version : The UK in general, what is your opinion?
I was born in Sheffield and then at the tender age of 2 moved to France. Came back to live here at sweet 16 and wouldn't move elswhere for all the money in the world.
Fair enough, the UK has its fair share of problems, one being the health service, and a few other minor things...
My opinion is more than confirmed by my experiences in Sheffield.
What about you, true Sheffielders? Would you consider moving elswhere in the uk, or in the world?? And if so, why would you?
evildrneil 28-07-2004, 09:07 Theres few places I would want to live rather than the UK (the only ones I can think of offhand are the Scandanavian countries - I admire their social democracy and equality - not to mention their willowy blondes!).
As far as I can see the problems that the UK has are more psychosocial than infrastructure. Great Britain became great through an attitude of looking forward and making a place for its-self on the european and world stage it seems to have lost its way and become scared of the future, prefering instead to try and retreat into the 1950s and engaging in damaging political short-termism.
I'm not a huge fan of the UK, to be honest - the country itself is beautiful in places - Snowdonia, the Lakes, Highlands, etc. but I have to say, I'm looking forward to leaving for a few years.
alchresearch 28-07-2004, 12:41 There was an emigrating programme on TV a few days ago and many are leaving for France and South Africa. House prices are very cheap over there.
In fact I know three different people who are upping sticks to France.
Couldn't stand France any more, the people are soo boring and arrogant.. The country is beautiful though yeah, true...
I might emigrate to New Zealand or Canada, probably not for another 10 years though.
If I lived anywhere other than teh UK.... Well once I considered moving to America one day, but given that their president is a ****, I doubt that'll ever happen.
Australia would be nice, I have distant relatives on Mum's side over there who live in a small Town called Mornihgtown somewhere near Sydney I think, I could also break into acting by becoming probably the first long term non-Australian or Irish member of the cast of Neighbours (whoo hoo! the chance to work with among others, Steph Scully! )
Phanerothyme 28-07-2004, 21:38 What is all this talk of leaving? Who mentioned leaving?
This country is so crazy I could never leave.
The sheer concentration of great minds and total loonies is an explosive combination - the UK is so much more interesting a place to live, and it's safe with a well established social security and health network, fantastic countryside, freakish weather, almost everyone speaks one form of english or another, not to mention the great fishing, a seat on the security council, fewer subtitles, 27 types of passata in the shops, the M25, A registered charity that is trying to launch a space rocket, the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Russell Harty.
No other nation in the universe can give you all this.
yeah, i kinda like this country. I like other countries too, but this is where the majority of my friends and family are, which is nice. Me being content is generally facilitated by being near the people that make my life. In that respect I will probably always consider this place my home. I may venture to other countries and even live there for a time, but my home will always be here and this is where I'll always return. Well, at least I think it is.
I would not want to live anywhere else but the UK and have no desire to leave these shores.
All this talk about moving to Australia and New Zealand - if these countries are as great as we are lead to believe they are then how come the UK is swamped with people from downunder.
royjames 30-07-2004, 17:41 This country is the best country on the planet, why woul'd anyone want to leave this beautiful land.
When I holiday abroad I always feel good when I land back on home soil.
Why would anyone who can't understand 'why anyone would want to leave this beautiful land' want to go abroad for their holidays?
royjames 30-07-2004, 18:18 Simple I always come back, holidays are one thing leaving for good is another.
I think I see it now.
Abroad is better for a couple of weeks a year.
royjames 30-07-2004, 18:24 Your getting it now lol

It's over populated, over regulated and under mountained.
It's all about what you're after isn't it.
I say Canada or New Zealand, i've never been to either. But i'll be going to both in the next few years for 2 or 3 weeks. So i'll see if it seems the way I imagine it.

Most of the Aussies over there are young people who are looking for a change in lifestyle for a while. The things they seem to enjoy are the pubs and nightlife and of course the gorgeous scenery. However, when it comes to putting down roots, the majority of Aussies will come "home". Ultimately, they know that this is the best country on earth to live in and raise a family. By the way, there are just as many English and european people out here doing exactly the same thing.
Good on em I say !!!
