Also if that was not enough that my Ipod is to be replaced by the new V2 ----

I also purchased an Archos AV340 from PC World @ Meadowhall retail 6 months ago for £550.... and lo and behold!

The ARCHOS AV400 series is now coming out this month...

I called Archos and they basically told me that they were bringing a new model out every 6 months so I beg everyone out there considering buying from them NOT to do it as they wont upgrade or refund!!!

Surely to god there must be some kind of law against such things or someone I can contact to sort this behaviour out?

Can anyone help on this or is anyone else in the same situation.

I suggest you research your purchases beforehand, here are some sites to help:

http://gear.ign.com/ , http://www.theregister.co.uk

Technology moves forward, if companies were forced to stick with what they've got they'd go under as their captive market would just stop buying as theyve got a piece of technology once, why buy another bit?

You expect them to do you a trade-up for the NEW model?

And I suppose Spar will be replacing the unopened milk I bought last week that's now useless manky cheese. Hmmm...

Its called progress. I bought a new graphics card not so long ago, and a couple of weeks later nvidia released a new chipset. Did I expect them to upgrade mine for free? No, I didnt. Thats the nature of the product. No matter how much you spend on a new gadget, you can always guarantee that within 6 months something better will come along, and theres bugger all you or anyone else can do about it but live with it and be happy with what youve got.

it's just as annoying that after Christmas, all the presents you bought people, will be on sale.

unfortunately, life is like that. We can't stop progress for the sake of consumers rights. If we did, everyone would still be swapping rocks and coal for services

You can guarantee that some where in small print on your instruction manual or packaging there will be a statemate saying something like "X Company follows a policy of continuous advancement in development. For this reason specifications may be changed without notice"

On a slightly different note take japanese cars for example, who are forever changing their models, how many different Toyota Corrolla's have there been over the years ?

Its called progress hum.......

I call it crap!

If people who are buying the supposed top of the range archos
hardware knew for a fact that 6 months down the line, their pride and joy was going to be out of date - they wouldnt buy it!
Period!

And then the company would go bust- which would teach them
a lesson to be quite frank

or you could:

a) research your purchase
- is it really THAT hard to click round a few sites?

b) be happy with your supposed 'top of the line (at the time)' purchase
- just because a newer model has come out doesnt make your gear crap, it still works just the same, and does exactly what you bought it for, so who cares about the new model? unless you bought it to be 'cool' and if so then you deserve it.

that entirely depends on whether they are buying it because they need that device, or because they want a top of the range "x" to show their friends.

Everyone in the former category will buy whatever suits their needs at the time, be that top of the range or mid range or whatever. Then when the time comes to upgrade because either new features are compelling or because the old one wore out, they will buy again.

Who ever heard of someone not buying something because in 6 months time their will be a better version.

Finally, I would recommend you join the former group only if you have money to throw away, as you'll be buying the latest and greatest tech every few months to stay at the leading edge.

Does the kit you have still do the job you bought it to do?

If so, what's the problem? You were clearly happy enough to buy it in the first place. If you're peeved because your toy is no longer the brightest and the best then I honestly think you need to grow up a bit.

I have a couple of computers here that cost me a fair amount of dosh when I bought them a few years ago. I could get cheaper, better ones today. But, they do the job and so I don't really give a toss. If I need more storage space or processor power then I'll buy a new one when I need it.

If you want to keep up with the bleeding edge as a fashion statement, then be prepared to spend money. No sympathy here, I'm afraid.

I don't see your point either Angelus. Just buy something and enjoy it.

There are usually only 2 times to buy something.
1. On release of the model. Pay full price, but be bleeding edge for longer.
2. On release of the replacement model. Pay discount price, but accept that someone, somewhere, has something more funky.

Either way - you pays your money and takes your choice.

I'm about to get the latest iRiver H340 as discussed in this thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=147227#post147227) but I accept that there will be a new model in a year. Hey.. Apple might even bring out an iPOD to match it soon, and I would covet one of those! ;)

Thank God someone invented the wheel eh

I have a PC with 80GB HDD - 2.56Ghz Pentium 4 Processor - 512 RAM etc.

At the time I bought it - it was the dog nads. Now it's not as up their with the bog boys as I'd like. However I couldn't exactly take it to Dixons for a new model could I? Yes I could buy new parts to upgrade. However I wont. I'll just wait till it's obsolete and buy a new desktop.

Stuff like iPods and the Archos MP4 players are bound to upgrade quickly. They aint like Playstations that upgrade once every 5 yrs or so.
That's just the way it is. I'm pretty sure that your Archos machine is still funky and does the job nicely - so why upgrade in 6 months?

Sell it on in about 24 months and then upgrade.

I bought an Archos av500 just before Christmas - Great Machine but it has packed up on me. When you hold the power button down to switch on it lights the screen as normal but doesn't display message "starting up" and when you stop holding the on button - the unit just powers off.
Anybody else had this problem? Is it the battery?
Does anyone have a contact number at Archos or repair centre details?

Thanks
Gazbob

Nonesense, this is life. Buy a car, 6 months later there's a new model, do I expect the dealer to replace my car with the new one? No, ofcourse not.

A quick way to go bust is if they *didn't* bring out new models!
