View Full Version : IPOD- Dont buy the old version!!!
Just found out to my shock and horror that my 6 month old Ipod that I paid £250 for is to be replaced with the new Ipod 2 later this month!
I personally am disgusted by this that they would do this so soon.
Anyone else in the same boat?
alchresearch 27-07-2004, 18:45 I know that the batteries only have a limited life and are very expensive to replace.
The new ones are on apples site now, the main visual difference is that the four buttons under the LCD have gone, they are now on the wheel. The new ones are said to have better batteries, and £100 cheaper, but dont come with all the accessories that would would have gotten with the previous generation.
The new Ipod v2 is only £220 as well where as I paid the
official apple store £250 for mine!
Its just disgraceful
Its more like the 4th version Angus, look at
http://gallery.ipodlounge.com/ipod/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=30
As you can tell, the one you have is a lot better looking that the very first (left) one. Can't blame Apple for improving them, after all its got one new customer, at least from me :)
Its the 4th Generation.
from left to right on that pic is:
1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, iPod mini.
the 4th gen (not pictured) looks like a cross between the 3rd gen and the iPod mini.
I paid £270 for my 3rd Gen, and im happy with it even now theyve released a new version. the 3rd/4th gens dont have the battery problems that the 1st/2nd gens had either.
http://www.apple.com/ipod/index.html has several pics of the 4th gens
There's more about the battery of earlier models here (http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/)
I actually prefer the look of the 3rd gen anyway and apart from looks the interface is exactly the same
I wouldn't buy any iPod. Overpriced rubbish in my opinion.
I actually get the satisfaction of changing a cd or md.
Gives you a short gap.
evildrneil 28-07-2004, 11:07 Welcome to the wonderfull world of capitalism! How would companies like Apple keep going if they didn't regularly change their products and rely on the dim and fashion sheep, who must have the latest and greatest, to ignore the fact they have perfectly servicable kit and go out an waste money on the new version?
If you follow the bleeding edge of fashion, be prepared for a few cut fingers.
There's a good rule in IT - never buy Version 1 of anything. Let other folks do the beta testing for the company.
Apple have always been a marketing outfit that occasionally produced good technology.

I agree, I didn't buy the Minidisc players when they came out with "Net-MD" just for the fashion. I bought one because my old tape player messed up...
What's new then.......
Just like pc's and TV's etc. You buy one and months later there's a new improved faster, bigger, sexier, cheaper model.

I bought my 3rd gen iPod when my Minidisc broke.
i also saw some guy break his white iPOD earphones by pulling them out of the socket, right at the end near the plug.
he had it on too loud, so i thought it served him right

Are you off your meds or something? You're complaining because they've reduced the price of something. Technology gets cheaper as it achieves greater market penetration - always has done - always will do.
It's annoying if you are an earlier adopter, but that's the price you pay, literally.
I'd like to complain to Barrat Homes.
30,000 years ago I bought this cave from them and now I can get a semi-detached in Fulwood for £150,000!
;)
What does my head in about this is that I also bought my
NGage last year as well and thats been replaced to the
new NGage QD --- but at least Nokia had the decency to replace my older version and upgrade to the new QD for £50

I'd get used to it If I were you, its only going to get 'worse'.
The next time you buy a mobile 'phone, it will be obsolete before you manage to charge the battery.
Well I'm just about to get a player, and I settled on the iRiver H140 (http://www.iriver.com/product/info.asp?p_name=H140) ... Until I saw the new version (on TheRegister I think) iRiver H340 (http://www.iriver.com/product/info.asp?p_name=H340)
Mmmm Colour screen, radio, 40GB, USB charging, upgradable firmware, sexy design, voice / radio recorder. photo viewer, supports MPEG 1/2/2.5 Layer 3, OGG Vorbis, WMA, ASF, JPG, BMP, 16 hr battery,
Apple are going to have to go through a whole lifetime of upgrading to match this baby.
You can keep your latest iPOD (http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/) :P
oasismark 02-08-2004, 15:41 What's the big attraction of an ipod?
Apple is and always has been a 2-bit company. It's built a reputation for gimmiks and how something looks, not how something works.
Pc's will always rule the computer world, not macs. You wonna listen to music on the go, get a "normal" mp3 player for a fraction of the price and laught at overpriced and outdated ipods.
Ha Ha! :D
just bought an ipod mini, hee hee!
