View Full Version : Help please - Mopeds / Scooters!
Hi, I'm a student looking at getting either a moped or a scooter. Can someone tell me the differences? and how fast a 50CC one goes compared to a 125CC one. Also any other advice on anything to do with them. What training / licesnses do you have to have? any what ages do you have to be? thanks a lot, Emma
A 50cc scooter can only do about 30mph. I'd recommend a 125cc, though presumably a 50 would be cheaper to insure. If you don't already have it, you'll need to get provisional motorcycle entitlement added to your driving licence (get a form from the post office), and in all cases you'll have to take compulsory basic training before you go on the road. I've seen various scooter shops around that'll sell you a package of vehicle, helmet, CBT and insurance - it's probably worth asking them. As I learnt to ride in Oxford, I can't give any personal recommendations for schools in the Sheffield area, but I'm sure there's somebody on here who can.

ok thanks I'll do some more research on the net
hiya, if you live in a rural area ie, stannington, wadsley, worral, bradfield etc, you can apply on a scheme to rent a scooter for £10 a month. (new cheme though with brand new bikes, which may be a bit more, it hasn't started yet, cos im waiting for a new bike.)
its what i do, to get to college n my work! (very handy with no busses aswell)
ring Jack Dunn on 0114 2859909 he's in charge of the scheme.
Just explain your situation why you think your a good candidate for a scooter, they 50cc bikes.
everything is free, CBT, helmet, gloves, jacket.
Good Luck :)
Hiya does this just apply to students do you know because i'm thinking of getting a scooter bur clearly they are quite expensive.....now renting one for a month or so but be a great idea to see if i would like one long term...
So does anyone know if the offer above is just for students because i am NOT one.

thanks for your help although i live on Eccy Rd in Sheff i have still left a message in the hope he can help put me in touch with someone else who does a similar kind of thing.
Or if anyone else knows of this let me know...

MuteWitness 27-07-2004, 12:30 am taking my cbt this friday, you can get a scooter from the scooter people and pay for it weekly over 2 years (i think) and if you decide you want something bigger you can upgrade
oasismark 29-07-2004, 14:53 I've got a scooter a silver Vespa ET4 125cc and i love it.
I got it from scooter people, but a haggled them down by LOADS!!! saved about £200 in the end.
Cost me about £2000 though overall.
They do have a package that includes everything but you can save on some things.
DON'T buy any extras (chain, alarm) from the scooter people, there extras are extortionate.
There alarms are £250, i got one for £65, they had a massive dead heavy chain on sale for £130, and i got it off the net for £50, inc. del. exactly the same one. I would reccomend investing in a good chain to chain it up, as theft is the biggest problem.
I took my CBT before buying a scooter as i wasn't sure if i wanted one and had never riden one before. I took it at a place behind morrisons car park at ecclsfield, (forgot name) but they was very nice.
I would recomend a 125cc as the 50cc's are limited to 30mph and you really can't keep up with the traffic at 30 mph, and i pity the guys on a 50cc when i fly past them. hehe!
Wonderfull in the summer, cold and wet in winter, and hell in the snow, (leave it at home in ice).
VERY cheap to run aswel, tax for the year is £15, yes that's a one and a five, £15!!
No parking fees ever again.
A full tank of petrol is about £6 and will last me about 3 weeks.
Which is about 150 miles on 6 quid!!!!!
You've always got the option of wizzing past trafic jams aswel. I now get to work in the same time wether there's traffic or not which is great.
Bottom line......
If you don't need to carry heavy items to work or give people lifts and stuff, then get one.
I laught at people who have to first wait for a bus, then sit in ques on the crowded bus (when the buses are running!) who are paying £10 a week for a bus pass, when i never que in trafic, never pay parking fees, and get 3 weeks travel for the less price than their 1 week.
Any questions just ask! :D

The test is called a C.B.T. Compusary Basic Training.
It cost me £65, 2 years ago.
All you need is a normal car driving licence, the test last about 4-5 hours. your taught how to manover the bike, signals and well evrything you need to know then you go out for 2 hours on the roads and the tutor watches you and then says wether you have passed or not, there's no writen test. It's just at the intsructors descretion.
I think it's quite hard to fail the test. nothing to it really, espesially as my scooter has no gears so i didn't have to learn that bit.
The only limitations of the C.B.T. are, it only lasts 2 years, ( i need to take mine again soon, i think, i need to check that), you are not allowed to carry passengers, & you are not allowed on the motorway.
NOTE: All this is info from 2 years ago so it may have changed.

I think if you only have provisional licence, you can only get a 50cc. and full licence lets you get up to a 125cc. Anything over 125cc and you need a full bike licence.
MuteWitness 30-07-2004, 18:08 i just passed mine today :-) so expect me on the roads soon! i paid £95 didnt think i would pass so just thought i would enjoy the day it was great!
matt_sheff 18-06-2006, 19:56 Question for oasismark about your vespa
Do you take yours on the motorway at all or is it best to stick to A roads?
Really want a vespa, passed my motorbike theory yesterday and wanting to do my CBT ASAP! Obviously not able to go on the motorways with a CBT, but eventually will get full license.
:)
oldtimer 18-06-2006, 20:11 I had a 125cc Vespa in 1962. Fantastic machine, gets through traffic, no sweat. Park ANYWHERE. Best vehicle for the city, BUT, if it is a 2-stroke (do they make them anymore? You have to use a petrol/oil mixture) DO NOT, repeat, do not, go on a motorway unless you back off on the accelerator often, you will seize up the engine if you don't. How do I know this? Duh!! Had a top speed of 80 mph (true), got about 75 mpg, very economical, but a little dodgy in rain or high winds. They have just started to sell the Vespa here in Alberta, Canada, but minus 30 degrees! I think not!!

No, you can ride a restricted 50cc on a provisional licence and CBT at 16, 17 and older you can ride a de-restricted 50cc or a 125cc on a provisional and CBT. Get a full licence and you can ride anything up to 33bhp (most 250ccs) for 2 years, and after that you can ride anything you want.
I've got a Honda Pantheon 125, one of the last with the two stroke engines and I love it to bits
it's quite happy doing almost motorway speeds for extended periods, I used to commute to Cambridge on it
if you are getting a scoot I would recommend that you get one with at least a 100cc engine as anything smaller won't have the accelleration to get you out of trouble when you need it, like when you are halfway across a T junction and the guy in the car decides to pull out because he's misjudged your speed and if you don't hit the throttle he'll take your rear wheel off
ive just bought a lambretta GP125 and love it .... not sure about the new rev and go scoots but they look fun !

No i don't go on the motorway as i only have a CBT and it's not allowed.
I only use it for commuting, (from high green to Uni, striaght down Penistone road)
Love it for that, NO WAY could i sit in traffic like most people do. One day i'm gonna try and count how many cars i pass, must be 100's.
Once i get to work i often think, "where would i be stuck now if i was in a car?", which brings a smile to me face.
rooooley 24-02-2007, 19:47 Hi Esme,
I have just bought a T reg 2 stroke Pantheon 125, do you have to add oil to the petrol??
cheers,
Martin

kenthack 24-02-2007, 20:02 it should have a seperate 2 stroke oil tank what you fill and the engine will have a pump that will mix the oil and petrol for it
this is what happened on most 2 stroke engined bikes but this is what i learned many years ago
kenthack 24-02-2007, 20:05 just did a search and all i could find about the Pantheon 125 is that it was a four stroke engine
rooooley 24-02-2007, 20:53 that`s great, thanks for your help, I think they changed to 4 stroke around 2002??

I have had various bikes over the years, from 50 cc mopeds up to 125 cc scooters. I loved them (except in the winter when my bum froze and the summer, when I drove into town on a hot day, parked up and had to disrobe before I fried!) and they were all economical. Back in those days, I could ride forever on an L plate. I am not sure what I can ride now with both a full and an automatic car licence - probably a 50 cc. Some day, I will probably have another.
muddycoffee 24-02-2007, 23:50 There are not so many two stroke bikes any longer because their emmissions are poor compared to four stroke and all the manufacturers are phasing them out.
Even if you do have a two stroke bike it will have a 2 stroke oil tank somewhere, and the carburetta will automatically mix the oil into the fuel, the oil last for months and months! .
Many years ago we had to put a couple of caps of 2 stroke oil into every tank full of 2 star petrol, or the piston would be in danger of a sieze. But realstically, those bikes were built in the 1970s or before and unless you have a vintage bike it shouldn't be an issue.

It is possible that you have a full moped licence, which they used to give free with a car test pass, but I am not even sure if it that stil counts.
However if you want to ride a motorcycle, you cannot even go onto the road unless you first pass an off road test called CBT which replaced the old part 1.
When you pass that simple test you have only 2 years to pass one of the full motorcycle tests, or you have st take it all over again.

Martinnope there's a seperate reservoir under the seat as well as enough luggage space to cater for about half a trolley's worth of shopping
it's a nice bike, look after it and it'll look after you mines never failed on me yet, mines a W reg ;)just did a search and all i could find about the Pantheon 125 is that it was a four stroke enginethey stopped doing the 2 stroke about 2 years back ... damn shame imo the 4 stroke is nice but sluggish in comparison and they remodelled the chassis so it doesn't look so good

Depends when you passed your car test. If you got your license before 1st Feb 2001, you can ride a 50cc (restricted to 30mph) without L plates or the need for a CBT. If you passed it after that, or want to ride a 125 (under 14bhp), you still need a CBT and will have to display L plates. no L plates or CBT ! :o
well if you have a deathwish I suppose but there are cheaper ways to commit suicide :loopy:

My thoughts exactly. I regularly see a bloke riding a zip 50 up City Rd. No L plates, obviously not got a full bike license, or he wouldnt be riding so close to the kerb hes practically on the pavement. Only explanation is hes passed his car test some years ago, bought a scoot as a form of cheap transport, and is now riding it with no training on it whatsoever, and thinks hes still on a pushbike.
kenthack 26-02-2007, 17:49 they always used to give moped with a car liscense (mne allows me to ride moped as a fully quallified) it also gave you provisional for a motorbike but i do beleive that you have to take cbt to use this entitlement now
kenthack 26-02-2007, 17:54 and a bit of history for you to read here http://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=343
Sending off for my provisonal tomorrow, hoping to take my CBT in october :D
Can anyone tell me the total cost of their bikes, insurace, CBT ect?

I paid 90 quid for my CBT, then 1300 for a 54 plate Yamaha Cygnus 125 scooter. Tax is 15 quid a year, and my insurance costs me 16 quid a month fully comp (thats at 33 years old, on a provisional licence and CBT, no car licence, and zero no claims bonus). Fuel wise I ride from Manor Top to Wincobank 5 days a week, sometimes 6, and fill the tank every 2 weeks or so, costs on average a fiver per top up.
Dont forget the cost of your safety equipment as well-it all mounts up. A decent helmet, armoured jacket and gloves will cost you a couple of hundred quid.
Thanks!
im on a budget of about £800-900 for scooter and saftey equipment.
Seen some helmets for about 60 notes.
Where did you take your CBT?
