trevortoupes 20-09-2006, 06:14 PM today our guinea pig has given birth and we have looked through the books but are still unclear as to how long we should seperate the male from the litter and female, we would appreciate any help on this matter??
Also she has given birth to 2 babies but her belly still looks very large could she give birth to more, do they normally go a long time between births or do you think thats it??
BobbyBunny 20-09-2006, 08:09 PM Maybe you should send a PM to baileys_mum on here, she should be able to tell you what to do.
Sorry I cant be of any help..
:)
baileys_mum 20-09-2006, 08:44 PM ooooooo i felt me ears burning lol!
Males and females should be kept away from each other, unless you want 100's of babies, females come back into heat within 18 hours of giving birth so I suggest if you havent already done so, remove the adult male.
2 sounds like a normal litter, if shes still straining in half an hour and theres no more babies i suggest to get her to the vet. Once the babies get to 4 weeks, males and females need seporating.
Any other queries give me a nudge :)

Just thought I should send them your way because I knew you would know what to do..I remember you saying your piggie was expecting.
Slightly off topic but has she had the babies yet?
:)

BobbyBunny 20-09-2006, 09:14 PM Yeah I saw a photo somewhere, she looks fit to burst! :hihi:

BobbyBunny 20-09-2006, 09:16 PM :o wow, bless her!
sooz22 20-09-2006, 09:17 PM with rabbits their bellys still appear large after birth as they are swollen with milk, birthing is normally very fast so it isnlikely their are any babies left.
Moonbird 21-09-2006, 10:36 AM you should see her today, she looks like shes eaten a watermelon
Oh my word i can't stop worrying about that mummy piggy....its taking over my life
trevortoupes 21-09-2006, 10:43 AM thanks for all your advice, unfortunately after only a couple of hours the 2 babies died, the mother didnt seem to want anything to do with them after the birth.
went to the pet shop toady and they said get another male and female and pair the 2 females together and do the same for the males as they are not solitary animals is this correct???

Oh i am so sorry to hear this, chances are there was something wrong with the babies, as piggies are normaly very good mums, i would be very wary in trying to pair 2 males especialy as the adult has been used for breeding, i am afraid they would most likely fight.
2 females is a very good combination though, or alternatively you could just have the male meutered and keep the male and female together.
How is the female? piggies can get very depressed after losing babies.
baileys_mum 21-09-2006, 11:17 AM I was going to suggest the same, though after neutering you have to wait 6-8 weeks for the sperm to die
trevortoupes 22-09-2006, 12:03 AM the pet shop said that it would cost around £50 to have the male done!!!!!!!
tinkerbell seems fine after her loss she is eating well and is active.
if i dont get another male toput with junior wont he become depressed being on his own??

That's very sad. :( Hope the parents are okay.

Yes he will, guinea pigs should never be kept alone. However, introducing two unneutered male guinea pigs to each other is a dangerous and very inadvisable business. Surely neutering him at £50 and keeping him with the female is, in the long run, going to cost you less than buying another female, another male, and additional housing? It's also still cheaper than the £100 I had to fork out to rid mine of mites!
sooz22 22-09-2006, 03:09 PM £50 is a lot to neuter a guinea pig, you may find a vet that will do it cheaper. See my thread on neutering rabbits, some one got their ginny done for £35. I dont know if aftercare was included though.
baileys_mum 22-09-2006, 06:33 PM I got quoted £30 for my Moz to be done, hes going in after xmas to have the chop.
Moonbird, you and me too re taking over my life, shes worrying me

This is very good advice, its wise to shop around with vets as the prices can vary widely, was quoted i think it was £60 by my local vet to neuter a rabbit, but at another vet it was £35.
baileys_mum 22-09-2006, 07:43 PM Im sure she'll be fine. I'm looking for loving homes for them when they are born....
sooz22 22-09-2006, 11:05 PM Incidently Moonbird if you know the name of said vet I am interested.

To be honest my geographical grip of Sheffield is rather lacking so if I said I live in Nethergreen how far away are we talking?
Can someone tell me how to quote properly so it comes up in blue please? Its getting a bit annoying!

Hi sooz2 :) The tags you need to use are '[ quote] and [/ quote] (delete the spaces, I've just put those in some that you can see the tags properly without it bringing up the quote box!). Also, if you put an equal sign and the name of the poster in the first tag (for example [ quote =tracie], again delete the spaces) then it'll also shown the name of the person you are quoting. Alternatively, hit the 'quote' button in the bottom right of the post you want to quote when you want to submit a new post. That'll quote the person you are replying to automatically :)
Baileys_mum - I can't wait to see the pictures of your new little piggies... baby guinea pigs are just gorgeous! I love how they look like such perfect minatures of adult guinea pigs

Lets try this then. Yay worked, Cheers Tracie
