View Full Version : Did you ever live in Firvale?
I am collecting information on the history and changes in the Firvale area. Do you live there now or did you live there before? I'm new to the area so I wonder how much has changed.
It would be wonderful to hear any of your stories, however short.
thanks

segasonic 20-09-2006, 15:50 I used to love exploring Page Hall (the building I assume the area gets it's name from) when it was boarded up. It had a croquet lawn! I think it's student flats nowadays. There were stables and servants quarters accessable from Bolsover Road, they were demolished and an old people's home was built on the site. There was an old air raid shelter or something at the back of what became the Bank of Pakistan that we used to use as a den, that's been long since concreted over. I lived on Firth Park Road, would've been early to mid 80s.
Dont go there pal, its a ****ing disgrace and like being in another country:thumbsup:
going back to c.1984 - my mum used to have a printers shop at the top of owler lane - we lived over the shop ... its now part of Hussain bros shop. i never had any issues with the area - the neighbours were polite and helpful ... we knew most of the people in the area and the cultures seemed to mix ok. At the other side of our shop was Socketts electrical - think that shut down a good few years ago. Further back down owler lane was a co-op and a wool shop...think there was a travel agents and a butchers?
i used to go out with a guy who lived across the road from us on firth park road ... he lived in the upstairs flat of a converted house - in the downstairs was a very wierd bloke who had a carpet up to the window and used to wander round the house wearing a loincloth :D
I met my wife in the Cannon Hall pub in 1962, it was a great place for the bands in the 60's, we were going to buy a big house after getting married at Pagehall & rent some rooms out until it was paid for, but decided to emigrate instead, what a bloody good choice we made.
Firvale infirmary was a workhouse in the old days where the homeless stayed, and Tony's Cafe at Firvale was like the coffee shop in Happy Days the old TV series.
Does anyone remember Jeff & Christine who owned a shop just below the Firth Park Hotel around 1965.
Firvale - known for the Workhouse, became the City General hospital, now the Northern General, had a brilliant social club with football teams etc. Next to the Cannon Hall pub was the Sunbeam cinema, can't remember when it was demolished 60s? Behind that area were allotments stretching back to Osgahorpe Hall. I recall the Hall was owned by possibly a military family and there summer garden parties in the 50s. Firvale was a busy shopping area with a Co-op.
Lindseyw 25-09-2006, 13:47 It is a hole. Should be filled in like the one in the town centre was. AWFUL place.
Grew up on Horndean Road from 1980 to 2003 ish.
Really enjoyed growing up in Firvale/Page Hall/Grimesthorpe/Firth Park in the 1980's. Would'nt fancy it much now though :o

Dunno, - but St. Cuthbert's church which you would now see immediately behind the donkey cart was built in 1903 I think. I believe the Cannon Hall cottages were demolished in the early 60s.

My recollection of Firvale (70s - early 80s) that is was thriving community. I lived on Earl Marshal so used to pass through Firvale all the time. As well as the shops mentioned in previous posts there was a baker on the intersection of Selby Road and Hinde House Lane, a pet shop (known as budgies) on the intersection of Bagley Road and Owler Lane, another shop (I think is was a sweet shop on the other side of Bagley Road. Wasn't there a Post Office near Sockets?
Demographics of the area was mixed and I cannot recall any trouble.
All down Owler Lane were back to back houses. Cannot remember when they got demolished.. On Rushby Street was a chip shop. I know this as it was once run by a school mate of mine's (Ping Lee) parents. I vaguely recall a small hardware type shop on either Rushby street or Heathcote Street.
Samsmum, I think I remember that house that had a carpet in the Window. Always thought it was totally weird. I knew the people who lived in the first house on Firth Park Road, next to St Cuthberts.
blmharthill 27-02-2007, 03:11 I grew up in Fir Vale from 1946 until about 1966. It was a really nice neighborhood then. My parents had a greengrocery shop on Barnsley Road and we lived over and behind it. There was a chip shop below us (Cockings) and a Department store further down where they would send your money through an air shute and I liked to watch it travelling across the shop ceiling.
Used to go in Tony's Cafe in early teens trying to act grown up. I would always have a lovely greasy burger and a Vimto. Saw Joe Cocker at St. Cuthberts Youth Club - remember him singing Georgia with his eyes closed. We weren't too impressed. We were into Rock and Roll!
There was also a spooky house next to the Sunbeam. Perhaps it is were the Cannon Hall pub is now. My brother and his pal saw a ghost there - a lady in a long dress on the stair landing. He still sticks to his story.
Anyway - many more memories of the neighborhood. This will do for now.
you wouldn't want to live there now omg
My Great aunt and uncle lived on Fir Vale over a butchers think it was close to where the computer shop is (think it is IN STEP). They were called George and Edith Timmins (around60's to 70's)
I grew up around Firvale, living on Earl Marshal Rd until I got married then we bought a house on Addison Rd. The Cannon Hall pub was the centre of the universe for me and my brother for many years, I think we must have bought that pool table a hundred times over. I recently returned to the area with my kids, hoping to get a couple of pints in at the Cannon Hall, devistated I was. At least the shops were still open even if they had changed hands. I didn't recognise any one I knew from back in the 70s - 80s though.
I attended Owler Lane Secondary Intermediate as it was in 1955. The streets were clean and the houses neat, all with donkey stoned steps. I then lived in Poppel St. in the early 90's and found that Page Hall was where they stuck the enema in Sheffield. We didn't last long and moved further up to Hucklow Rd. The place is disgusting and I feel very sorry for those who have to live there.
blmharthill 01-03-2007, 11:20 Hi Jossman - Did you know my brother, Robert Larkins, b. May, 1945. He also went to Owler Lane, along with Neville Crinson, who lived on Popple Street?

I remember both names but unfortunately they were not in my form. I lived at Hillsborough when I attended Owler Lane School. I lived on Popple St. temporarily in the early 90's.
you may as well move to Pakistan you might meet more white folk over there than in firvale
I'm M :hihi: Who are u? PM me
Hi Brailz did any one in your household keep running dogs in the eighties??

my brother and me both grew up at page hall before moving out of the area in the late 70"s it was ok but declined rapidly loved it then but would demolish it now!!!
I used to rent a top floor attic in No 337 Barnsley Road in the Sixties it's about 100 yards up from the Hostpital gate...It was £4 per week...The landlord was a Frenchman..We used to stick the wallpaper with drawing pins co's the walls were so damp...And shared the bathroom with four other families...We were glad when we moved to Hyde Park so we could live in luxury by comparison.
I grew up in fir vale/ page hall 1975 -2002. the best thing i did was move away. My parents still live there its horrible seeing the state of the area when we go to see them.
I lived on Owler Lane until 9 years ago. I have to say that I loved it although it was a pain when some of my favourite shops closed down, like the DIY place and the wool shop. The people on either side of me in my yard were all Pakistani and really nice. One lady at the end used to send over plates of the most amazing food - apparently something that is a custom if they have more food than they can eat. I used to teach English to another family in the yard as well.
Its a shame to hear it is going downhill, I was thinking of moving back that way.

the fact that its going downhill is others opinions if you liked it then dont let others put you off. i know a young (english)couple who live there and thay like it.
i lived on firth park rd fron 71 till 87 ish remember bill bevers, the hardware shop, liptons, dr mcavoys which is now a barbers(i think), the post office nr liptons (think the ppeople who had it had a son in my yr at school) the pet shop on corner of skinnerthorpe, the bakers opposite mmmm lovley buns, can anyone remember what the shop on the corner of little bolsover was before it turned into a dodgy cafe, also on there was a small garage.

it was a chemist for many years then a car spares run by the proprietor of popes hardware shops son.. the two garages one was owned by bill beevers the other was run by a lawnmower repair man the clothes shop next door was shut down and turned into a sauna then shut down again very quickly!!!
We had the garage on Herries Road, from 83-99

Hi Brailz did any one in your household keep running dogs in the eighties??
Just revisited this thread...
Yep! We had lurchers which lived in kennels on the back garden.
lakerman 15-02-2009, 12:18 I've only just picked up on this thread and it brought back memories. I used to frequent Tony's cafe in the early sixties, usually on a Sunday afternoon for some reason or other. I loved playing the pinball machines and drinking gallons of Coke. Later on I met my wife in the Cannon Hall pub. We loved that pub, great people and some good entertainment . I met many friends there. We eventually got married at St Cuthberts in 1970. Then we lived on Barnsley Road until 1986. My late mum lived in the flats at the back of the Cannon Hall. We used to go to the Chinese restaurant (which is now a chinese take away) at the junction of Barnsley Road and Herries Road. We used to think it was great having a Chinese restaurant on our doorstep. Looking back it was a lovely area in those days but like so many others have said, it is pretty awful around there now. I don't live all that far away now and pass through Firvale all the time, but I'm glad to be passing through and not living there. Just to mention the names Robert Larkin and Nev Crinson, I remember the names but just can't put any faces to them after all this time.
sexylass1983 15-02-2009, 23:55 Hi, i work at the dentists on Blyde rd, just wondered if anyone has any info about it as my colleagues and I suspect its haunted. Any info would be much appreciated.
Thankyou.

sexylass1983 16-02-2009, 00:34 Well how long ago is that? He doesnt work there anymore! I want to know what the building was before it became the dentist. There is am old stone wall at the back with what looks like a gate post like there was a big house or something before all the houses were built. Just wondered if anyone knew?

I was born on Firvale Road in 1946 and lived there until about 1966. Don't know which side Blyde Road you are on but there were some cottages facing Barnsley Road the backs of which would have abutted the Blyde Road houses. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned them and you can see a picture of them at /www.picturesheffield.co.uk. It's a shame they were pulled down. They were very pretty. Not sure about ghosts! I'll ask my brother, he once saw one in the old Cannon Hall (not the pub, the Hall) when it was boarded up and he and his pals used to sneak in, so there may be one or two floating around the area! ttfn

I had a friend who played bass in the Climax Jazzmen who had a residency at the Cannon Hall on a midweek night (probably was a Wednesday) in the 1960's. It was nearly always full and a great night.
Did you ever see them?
John
lakerman 16-02-2009, 15:24 Climax Jazzmen. Another blast from the past. I had forgotten all about them. I wasn't a jazz fan but they were great to listen to. I think they were there on a Wednesday or Thursday night, definitely mid week.
With regards to the dentist being haunted, it is very close to where the old Firvale workhouse was situated. There must have been some funny goings on in there and many people will have died in there. So draw your own conclusions. Working at the dentist, it is a subject you could really get your teeth into.
sexylass1983 17-02-2009, 21:20 Well thanks for the information. I work with 2 international dentists and when i showed them the old photo they couldn't believe it was the same place! We were all very interested as some very strange things have happened especially towards the back of the building, which is what would have been the front entrance to the cottages. Actually part of the original wall and gatepost are still there. If anyone else knows of anything i'd be very interested.
blmharthill 18-02-2009, 19:44 Re your ghosts - I've been reading that the cottages once belonged to the Cannon Hall estate and were built to house the grooms. Later became part of the Union Work House. Don't know where I read this, because now I can't find it. I'll post any new info that I come across. I see that Sheffield has a Paranormal Society, perhaps you could invite them over!
I understand they are knocking down all the houses on Skinnerthorpe Road - has that started yet?
lakerman 26-02-2009, 21:10 Yes, the houses are coming down on Skinnerthorpe Road. Don't know when though. I understand that the shops at the end of the road (junction with Barnsley Road) are coming down as well. This has been common knowledge for a few years now but nobody seems to know when it will happen.
Brooksy,
My word!!!!!
you been born and raised around it all my frind........ Sunny Attercliffe and all....come on

I met my husband in the Canon Hall in 1963. I loved it. Loved the bands and the company. Most people were regulars and you got to know them quite well. Stopped going as much after we were married and had kids, but still have many happy memories. I had friends that lived on Skinnerthorpe Rd. and at that time it was considered quite a nice area. I haven't been in the UK since 1970 so I'm sure that I would see a big change.

Firvale-help 16-03-2009, 12:48 does anyone know what the halal supermarket on page hall road used to be? its a really grand building, it looks like an old playhouse or something??
segasonic 16-03-2009, 13:59 It was Pope's D.I.Y. for many years, not sure what it was before that though.
lakerman 16-03-2009, 14:40 Firvale-help,
The building was the Brightside and Carbrook co-operative society shop in the early 1900's. I don't know when it ceased to be that but as Segasonic says, it was Pope's D.I.Y. for quite a few years afterwards. The building across the road from there was also a grand building. It was originally called Peel's Coliseum. They sold three piece suites and furniture items as well as being a drapers shop. In recent years it has been a laundrette.

Hi sexylass
Me and my family lived at the dentists on Blyde Road from approx 1960--67.
The building was occupied by Franklins Decorators, the office and workshop being where your surgery is and the terrace house joined on was my humble abode. My daughter was born in the front bedroom and although we never saw any ghosts, you may be hearing the echoes of my missus in labour!!!! We had some happy times but but would not go back at any cost.
Hope I've been of some help

I can confirm that quite afew houses have been knocked down on Skinnerthorpe. It looks really strange now, the rest are boarded up whilst the council sit scratching their ******* about what to do next.

blmharthill 22-04-2009, 12:12 Hello Dors, I went to Hinde House, but my brother Robert Larkins went to Owler Lane. Have I seen your name on the Grimesthorpe link. Do you know Ralph Aspinall? The names you quoted look familiar but I may have heard them mentioned by Rob and Ralph. Sorry just replying but havn't been on forum for a while.

Yes you've seen me on the Grimesthorpe thread. Didn't know Ralph before the thread started but feel like I know him well now. He and my husband Trevor who goes by the name of Skippy hit it off from the start and keep in touch with each other all the time now. I can't say that I remember the name Robert Larkins. I went to Owler Lane infants and then to Grimesthorpe Juniors. I guess you could have heard the names mentioned by Ralph or Rob, they were all my age so would have been the same age as Rob if he was born in '46.

Was the Cannon Hall a old builing that was demolished or was it the building that became the Cannon Hall pub? Tried looking for a pic but can't find anything.
Downsunder 03-09-2009, 13:54 I had some friends that lived on Skinnerthorpe Rd. in the 60's. Anybody know Valerie Brown, Kathleen Gibson and Jennifer Goodwin?

We lived on Herries Road, across the road from Northern General, just above Turners Garage. Mum and Dad owned the house from 1953 until 1980's. It was a 4 story house and now is flats. I used to work at the hospital, Mum was a nurse there on Keeble Ward. I knew Josephine Stenton on Skinnerthorpe Road but none of the names you mention. Also Margaret Griffiths lived on Firvale Road. I remember Gabbitas Newsagents but where was Tony's Cafe? Didn't the Chinese restaurant used to be a sweet shop called Tinkers(?) Cannon Hall was our local, loved the Whitbread Tankard! Also the Sportsman and The Tolgate. Did you ever go in the Mojo Club? My husband lived on Earl Marshall Road across from John Beevers - all motorbike fanatics. We too emigrated in 1972 to Sydney, then got wise and moved to Tasmania - more like home. Last time in Sheffield 1995.
From Downsunder
...lived there 1945 to 1963 - felt like a village with all types of shops and services - cottages on what was Batley St [ they tried to gentrify it and changed the name to Crabtree Close ] Firvale bottom was full of shops , could go on for hours so will leave it there...
bossyboots 04-09-2009, 09:29 I had a ladies hairdressers in Hind St from1972 to 78. then I went to live on Barnsley Rd, at the end near the traffic lights. My son and daughter went to Owler lane school, Darren and Georgina. I couldn't wait to move away and when the council wrote to say, ""they wanted to buy my house"" I phoned straight away, it was theirs.
My neighbours of a very long time thaught I was crazy, I moved in 2006 to Ecclesfield and I love it. And by the way we got a good price, more than if we'd tried to sell ourselves.
Drugs changed Firvale, scroungers, who didn't know the meaning of the word "WORK".
Coloured people are not to blame for everything,I saw that first hand living there. There are still nice people live in the area, and it's wrong to judge a person because of where they live. You can go on any road in any area and see a scruffy house. Lets not judge Firvale so harshley, and I'm sure many will agree.By the way, how come no one mentioned Roxy School of Motoring.

Can you remember Joanne Moxon who had the hairdressers on spital hill. [Hair by Joanne]? She lived next door to the Sportsman on Barnsley road.
Dunno, - but St. Cuthbert's church which you would now see immediately behind the donkey cart was built in 1903 I think. I believe the Cannon Hall cottages were demolished in the early 60s.
Sheffield council would have demolished most of Stratford on Avon if they had been the local council there. They are just a bunch of vandals.
The only thing you can say about them is that they are consistent.
Someone around 80 odd yrs ago when Sheffield became Socialist must have decided to reinvent the whole place. Even taking into account the bombing etc from WW2. Look at all the youth/student (mostly foreign) housing thats going up!
Was the Cannon Hall a old builing that was demolished or was it the building that became the Cannon Hall pub? Tried looking for a pic but can't find anything.CAN REMEMBER THE PUB IT WAS A NICE clean place but went down hill as the ethnics took over fir vale as they dont drink:huh:(cheap vodka always available) so the cannon dropped screaming to its feet RIP ANOTHER LOCAL INSTITUTION GONE
