I'm going to turf the back garden. Has anyone any recommendations for suppliers of turf?

Also, what's the cost of the turf, and is it easy to do it yourself, or should I pay someone to lay it too?

Cheapest I found earlier this year were A1 Turf Supplies. Good quality and half the price of anyone else.

Its easy to do - just lay them on the ground in a pattern similar to how you would lay brick on a wall. Easy to cut - just use an old but sharp knife.

My Dad goes to some place out at Ecclesfield to get his Turf.

Can't remember the name of the place.

Will look it up on Yell.com and report back with the number.

Here it is...

Marshall's Turf Supplies, 165a, Cross Hill, Ecclesfield, 0114 2570140.

The best I have found is a company at Kiveton in Sheffield, Kiveton Turf Supplies, I think they charge £1.50 Per Sq Metre.

The telephone number is 0114 2693209

...... is it easy to do it yourself, or should I pay someone to lay it too?

Getting your preparation right is quite important.

What was on the area to be turfed? i.e it might need a good dose of weedkiller before you lay. Once you have made the ground is free of 'dips' and low spots, give it a light raking over with a lawn rake to loosen the surface a little.

When laying the turfs after the first one, it means standing on the one you just laid - it's best to stand on somthing like a short scaffolding plank to do it - in fact you can bear down on the plank with a vertically held fencepot to 'bed in' the turf.

Use something like an old breadknife, or serated edged knife to cut the turf in a sawing motion.

Last but not least, water the lawn daily for a couple of weeks afterwards if it hasn't already rained

Good luck!

Edit: just noticed, you've put this in 'computer tech and chat' is 'turfing the back' a new computer jargon I've missed? :D

Yeah, I think I'll report it. Surely it should be in Sheffield chat if Tony is looking for a local supplier? :D

Tech Chat use to be "Ask an Expert" when the original message was posted, I think they should bring it back, can we have a petition to get it re-launched. :D

Did a bit of turfing 4/5 weeks ago...
B&Q Queens Road, approx 6' x 1.5-2', £1.00 a roll.
Went back for more the following week and it had gone up, but only by 25p.
