What can I put in my tubs and wall-baskets that will flower through the winter and that isn't pansies? Cos I've got pansies in the beds already.

One genus of useful plant, that doesn't look that impressive, but is shrubby and evergreen, and with the most wonderful heady scent when it flowers in January and February, and lovely black berries following on from flowering is Sarcococca, also known as winter box (unfortunately the flowers aren't much to look at but it's more than made up for by the smell).

It's a small unassuming little thing, but it does make the garden smell divine at an unusual time of year for scented plants to be at their best. I've had mine for 12 years now, and I've only ever had to prune it twice, and it's about knee high now. Whatever anyone says about it being an unusual (and therefore tricky) plant to grow- I've never fed, mulched or watered mine and it's done just fine all by itself.
