emperor_ming 18-09-2006, 22:47 Hi, im in the process of moving at the moment but i cant really bidget until i have an idea as to how much removals will cost
Im moving from a 4 bed house a couple of miles down the road - no issues with access.
I would be gratefull if anyone who has moved recently can give me an idea as to how much it cost (including the dreaded VAT!).
All responses appreciated!!! Let me know if you paid for them to pack etc!

Depending on value of items it might be worth calling a man and van outa the paper , try and get one with LWB (Long wheel base) and high roof where possible for easy loading. usually about £20 per hour, then pay a few local lads , that you know of course a tenna each and your sorted!
thats the cheap option, as for the dear option best you could do is again ring out the papers specifically for removal firms

It will cost about about £400 for a proper job and the packing will be £200 to £400 depending on what you want doing, give bev a ring at sbs 2574700....she might do you a deal.
banesmabes 19-09-2006, 08:13 I paid £35 per hour for Merrills removals. They didn't do packing (but I wouldn't be interested in that anyway), but they did a good job. There were some access issues and the service included dismantling and re-building of a particularly large wardrobe.
Took 5 hours for a flat to flat move, but as I say there were access and furniture issues that really slowed things down. They moved my mum and dad from a 3 bed house to a 2 bed house, and a much further distance, in 4 hours.
I paid too much with Keetons, they quoted me one price, charged me more, so wasn't too happy. Just be careful, they sometimes say it'll be 4 hours and charge for 6, or did in my case!

They can only give you an idea for how long it will take, as they don't know what access will be like, what traffic will be like, and what furniture you have. You can't really complain if it then takes longer.
sounds like merrills are the cheapest...just watch for any extra travelling charges....but they must have good staff to work so quick.
In my experience i would get them to quote....then you know the worse case and you dont get suprises........i only like 2 of them! Birthday and Christmas
Yellowrose 20-09-2006, 19:21 Many of the quotes I had were £35 per hour for a removal van plus two men. There was a diesel cost per mile from some companies also.
We have decided to rent a Luton Van with tail lift for £85 a day. Some places do them for £70 if you can move mid week.
I recently moved and used sbs, they were great! really helpful and friendly. I called them for a quote and they charged by the hour with a minimum of four hours (I think) We moved from gleadless to ecclesfield and it was all finished within the minimum time. they also provided the packing boxes (at a charge) prior to the move which you can either pick up or have delivered.
yorkiepudd 05-10-2006, 14:53 We have also just used SBS removals.
I tried others recommended on here (such as Merrills) but no one else was available for today.
All I can say is that (although they are a bit dearer than some at £45 per hour) the service, both from the staff in the office (Bev / Dean) and the men on the van (Darren / Glyn) was absolutley 1st rate.
All my (many) queries were answered immediately on their freephone number and the guys who actually did the move couldn't have been more helpful, checking where every single item wanted to go and even re-arranging the furniture in the new house for us.
We were inside the 4 hour minimum charge even though they had to travel all the way (from Ecclesfield to Birley) - they only included 30 minutes each way as the travelling time in the calculations.
Highly recommended, you obviously get what you pay for.
babychickens 05-10-2006, 16:09 well, i rang around for several quotes a few days ago, and this is what i found.
Andrews removals(01142919146) - £38 +vat per hour, min 4 hours.
boxes between £1.50 and £2.50.
Williams removals (01142574703). some confusion - phone was answered, pushy woman wanted all my details when i just wanted to know how much per hour/insurance/boxes etc. when she got to asking me where i had heard about sbs i questioned whether they were sbs because i thought they were called williams, and the phone went dead. someone called me back a minute later (bev) and said that williams rent office space off sbs, then quoted me mon-thurs £45 +vat, f-s £50 +vat. min 4 hours. i was very suspicious and weirded.
AH removals (08000350943) mon-thurs £38 +vat, fri-sat £44 +vat. £1 +vat per box.
merrills (can't find where i wrote it down) m-t £40, f-s £45 +vat. min 4hrs. boxes £1. really nice friendly guy.
SBS had quoted me £45 or £48ph +vat, min 4 hours.
Williams do rent space down at sbs...in fact i think they rent to a few companies for parking.....andrews are also there, pickfords and acorn.
Funny about that call to williams?

unfortunately unless you know where the depot is you don't know which companies are all in one place - not that it really matters, i suppose.
very funny about the call to williams. i was going to use sbs but now i'm very suspicious. i liked the guy on the phone at merrill's more anyway, so i think we'll be using them.
yea and merrills are cheaper so it might be your best bet?
yorkiepudd 06-10-2006, 16:45 And some good reports on here - I did try them but they were fully booked for the date required.
However, I wouldn't worry about the call with SBS, they were spot on with us.
Tommyteacake 06-10-2006, 17:17 If you check on the companies registration database, you will find that SBS actually trade under several names. These names have been bought up over the years and absorbed by SBS (Williams, Manning Vanning). People who believe they are using a company they may have used years ago will infact end up with SBS. Thats not such a bad thing though, there are much worse companies out there. Other companies park at SBS's depot at Ecclesfield and use their storage facilities. The best thing to do is just phone around, try to get a visit and expect to pay between £38 - £45 hour for a decent service. Also, try phoning some independant storage depots (Armadillo, Admirals) that don't have any involvement in removals directly to see who they recommend. You'll find they have a fairly unbiased view and they have companies in on a daily basis. Good luck.
