What do people have to say about it? I ask because ive never been there and here its open very late and im always wanting to try new places, or am i likely to be shot for not wearing sportswear in there?

Also can anyone tell me what bars are good to work in and which arent. Having decided id much rather spend the summer in sheffield i decided i wanted bar work thus i applied to about 25 bars in sheffield city centre and broomhill. i now have quite a lot of interveiws and wondering what are the places with the friendly enviroment and what arent.

I love the music to be honest!

Sometimes they play a few tracks that I can't stand but not everybody likes the same stuff!

When they have the 3rd room built it's going to be an R&B room and the other rooms will be trance, dance and euphoric house and pop, 70's, 80's & 90's so it does cater for quite a wide range.

What do you enjoy listening to?

Been bobbing over to Niche on and off since discovering it in April 1997 and absolutely love the underground sound and feel to the place.

But saying that, I would rank it up there as one of the shadiest venues that I've been to in fifteen years of going to pubs and clubs, and it has got quite a well known violent history.

You can catch anywhere at the wrong time, it's just a matter of luck I suppose. I've seen aggro in quite a few places over the years but never actually seen it at Niche.

There are definitely more relaxed dance music nights out there other than Niche - but there is something about the place.

Niche is fine it's got great music and some really sound people go there. You won't find any trouble unless your looking for it, just keep to yourself and you'll have a great time.

I've been to niche a few times but didn't find it intimidating at all. I had a good laugh but yes, there are a few scallies and bad boys looking for trouble and it isn't somewhere I'd go on a regular basis.

Having said that, I've had more trouble off ********s in republic and leadmill (including bouncers) than I did in Niche....

Niche is a great venue, although there are always a few there that look a bit shady. Quality music and great atmosphere generally, plus I've seen a lot more trouble at clubs like gatecrasher, zero and kingdom. Only ever seen trouble in niche once and this was just a flying punch, didn't go any further.

Just not a place for pulling really, more dancing till it hurts! Just don't forget to wear comfy shoes or else blisters could be a problem if you like to party hard.

are you lot on GLUE?

Niche is a hole, full of the chav elite (for elite read S**TE). The place is filled with "gangta" wannabies and dealers spoling for a fight.

Its raided every weekend, the only amazing thing about the place is that it hasn't been closed down yet.

Tell you what i cant stand and it is a real pain in the arse

i dj and get people coming up. What do they say??

"got any niche stuff"
my reply - such as

"ya know mate niche tunes"
my reply - such as

"ya know niche banging tunes"
my reply - am i not playing big ang at the moment

"oh arr, cheers mate toon!!!"

it makes me wonder how many of these people have ever been to niche or is it the buzz word for chavs.

And before i get flamed for this i once had a 45 (at least) year old come up and ask for niche tunes, when i asked if any in particular was told

"i dont know any never been but keep getting told its good"

If you want niche then go to niche!!!!!!

p.s if anyone from niche is on here i am NOT pulling your club down - use the momentum and release a cd of your top tunes ala gatecrasher.

You would make a fortune round here selling them.

to all you people who have nothing better to do than gripe about :
what other people like or don't like,
where they go or don't go
why don't you try being just a little constructive or at least make your entries funny or even interesting would do and then maybe your opinions might be worth actually reading.

I personnaly have been to niche a fair few times since moving to sheffield and have always had a brillient time and as yet i haven't found anywhere else with any sort of atmosphere (apart from the last plannet zogg)
an underground feel,
decent (if a bit repetitive) music,
mostly decent people who are out for a laugh with a distinct lack of charvers in tracksuits & girls ....well thats a whole new topic!

Where else do you recommend???

sheffbag
15-11-2004, 12:45
It all depends on what you like. not all clubs are going to be for all people

If you like Niche (and lets face a lot do) then thats fine and i hope you enjoy the nights there - my gripe was about people who havent been there coming and asking for "niche" tunes OR the gurners that think its cool to ask for niche tunes when it doesnt fit in the places theme

Hey you must be a great DJ if you play other DJ's stuff, e.g. Big Ang, I saw her at Reflective a few weeks ago!

& you have obviously not been to Niche or any good music shops lately as they have been selling Niche CD's and tapes for years.

sheffbag
16-11-2004, 07:21
Its over now is a Sheffield anthem - even played it last year when i did a warm up for a film promotion at Meadowhall and the people there knew it.

I've got no problem playing other dj's stuff - if its good and gets a reaction then it deserves to get played

i tend to play a commercial night to an older crowd (playing luther and jocelyn brown etc) but have been moved to a quiter night to try and build it up and quite a few of the crowd want "niche" tunes.

Buy my upfront stuff from kucia records in Rotherham or buy the "best of" series from Reflex and need to restock urgently for this new night - any recommendations???

Keep getting asked for "Girlfriend"

tiffanysara
17-11-2004, 12:52
One thing you must remeber is that us people that do like 'niche' tunes aka speed garage, we dont no the proper names for (unless they have already been released as an R&B track) so what are we supposed to ask for?? And the tapes/ cds that we buy dont have the names on also. I thought it was your job as a dj to cater for our needs that are listening to it. Why moan about that, you really have nothing better to moan about!! just cos they ask for niche tunes??

NatalieSheff
17-11-2004, 13:04
didnt the unit used to play niche music, but didnt have a bad rep. still a pants club but without the blood and guts etc

sheffbag
17-11-2004, 14:35
Tiffany that is my point. I try to cater for everyone but when i am playing speed garage and people still come up asking for "niche" tunes then thats what gets to me

I may not be getting myself across right here - i have no problem playing pop, dance, r'n'b, urban, cheese, oldies, speed garage, techno, old school, party or whatever as long as the crowd have a good time (that my job make sure people have a good time irrespective of what my personal preference is) even if i get asked for niche if playing a mobile i generally play big ang or even chain of fools if its an older crowd

I wouldnt class Big Ang "its over now", Dynamix II "Dont need another man" or "boy you got to me" as speed garage but they are both massive tunes with the "niche" lads that come to my venue.

But what does get me is people that just come up and ask for stuff because they think its a cool thing to say without actually knowing what it is.

The point you raised about not having the names on the cd's proves my point about releasing stuff, if you read what i put i said release cd's on a commercial front, get tracks licensed and release them commercially ala gatecrasher and Ministry of Sound.

the local market would be massive and could reach a much wider audience therefore generate more interest in the club and so on and so forth.

If you wish to flame my opinion then that is your perogative and i will certainly repsect your comments but all i would say is would you ask for something if you didnt know what it was at all and never even heard it before??

UKer

I think a lot of people call the tunes played at Niche 'Niche Tunes' as they don't only play SpeedGarage - the organ tracks are technically Organ House (see the dedicated SG forums such as Basscutz for indepth discussion of this), and many of these are played at Niche (more so in the past, the 'Bassline' sound is becoming more prevalent these days (there have been some who call the newer Speed Garage (ala Ang/Naughty Nick etc) 'Bassline House', just to add more confusion, and reserve the label of SG for older stuff like the original Trotters releases)).

For tunes I'de recommend a trip to Studiobeatz on west street, they have loads of Organ House and SG.

I personally like to DJ mainly SG as I find some of the Organ House far too samey.

As for saying it because it's cool - I agree this is sad. Whenever I'm shopping for records chav-like people normally come into the shop asking for 'Niche Tunes' or saying 'Do you sell SG' and from what I've seen shop owners normally fob them off with the worst quality or old mix cds!

19-11-2004, 08:32
THANK YOU UK-ER!!!!!!!! good to know im not the only one

I shop at Kucia records in Rotherham as i know the owner and he does me good deals

Here is a classic case and yes this is a rant as i am still p'd off about it -

Worked last night. Bear in mind i have been asked to turn the night into a commercial night by management since the previous night there was having to close early with no one in PLUS its getting near christmas so works do's are coming out and we are getting busier.

there is a crowd of people that come in that all they ask for is "niche tunes" and stand on the dancefloor or by the side so i play some while its quiet as they come in early (gemma fox went down a storm) BUT then as soon as i play anything else (destiny's child, Danzell, Nina Sky, Khia) i get them coming saying "play niche, play niche, play niche, my friends all want to go coz you not playing niche"

On and on this went and we are getting busier, there was a couple of leaving do's in as well who wanted r'n'b so banged some classics on (JaRule, Lose my breath, you can do it vs Dirrty) and floor is filling up nicely

STILL getting "play niche, niche niche" from the same group so puts on Big Ang (even though one asked for some "speed garage ya know stuff like big ang") its over now (ANTHEM!!!!!!) good reaction BUT the lads in it start bouncing around and hassling the lasses that are dancing - trying to judge it played Sweet Thang after to keep it on a dancey yet still a bit commercial stakes (6 years old and still fills a floor???)

Right - now into Just be good to me - keeps people on but the "niche" crowd are really being obstructive so took it back to commercial and immediately get flamed for "not playing niche" this results in them just standing on the dance floor and i could see others in the club wanting to come on the floor but were intimidated to hence i look a t**t for not having a full floor.

People start to leave and i know why. Then first smell then spot the weed been sparked up, now i dont have a problem with dope, its your perogative if you want to smoke the weed, not my scene been there done that back in the day. BUt i wont have it in the club so time to leave.

After they had been removed left me with very very little to work with so thank you boys and girls for making my night that much harder. I dont mind playing any style of music but i will not be harassed for trying to entertain a club not just a small band of pot smoking, crowd hassling people who cant even tell me a tunes name apart from big ang (ya know speed garage), dj saved my life and just be good to me.

Is it my fault for playing the tunes in the first place, maybe? but if people ask for records then i will play them BUT i will play what EVERYONE wants plus if i am asked to make it a commercial night then i will as its xmas coming up and the party tunes are going to be dragged out soon. Mind you i do have a lock'n'load vs rudolph the red nosed reindeer mix whic has to be heard to be believed

Rant over im off for a sandwich!

you get idiots everywhere you go. theres always gunna be ....s acting tough, and their girlfriends stood in their little tracksuits thinking their hard as. 99% of people in niche are only there to enjoy themselves. the musics fab and addictive. i find myself sitting down for a rest, but having to get straight back up cos another fab tune comes on. i always keep myself to myself when i go in there. But the fact of the matter is if your not involved in the shady side of life and some of the people in there then you wont have any trouble.

But i really would recommend comfy shoes. Dont believe everything you hear, most people that go on about how dodgy the place is have never been in it!!!! so how can they comment? they'v probably been told by their mates that have gone 'that its really shady, n you gotta wear a bullet proof' n the only reason they say it is to make themselves look even tougher for going! Of course theres going to be drugs in there, theres drugs everywhere these days, but if you dont do them then its nowt to do with you what other people do, like anywhere.

havent been for a while but last toime i went it was open til 5am, alcohol stops being served at 2am, prices £10 for girls and £15 for lads. and you do get searched on the door, which they do for everyones protection, which makes me feel better

have fun!!!!

One thing ive noticed is that the people that say that niche is crap and full of violence etc are generally the people that havent even been.

Ive been to Niche many a time and yes while it does haev a somewhat underground shady atmosphere to it, its certainly a good night out imo. Ive never seen any trouble at Niche in all the years ive been going. I know you do get trouble there, but then again you get trouble in any club in the world.

Niche has got a [bad] reputation for a reason and that is because there have been shootings, stabbings, bottlings on a relatively regular basis.

@spyro2000 You frankly DO NOT get that amount of violence in any/every club in the world.

I for one have never been to Niche for the simple fact that I don't really like the sort of bassline house/speed garage tunes that are regularly played there and the fact that it has a bad rep.

Hi
I understand what you are saying, but like ive said, Ive been going on a regular basis and its not a regular thing trouble at niche. I think the reason that Niche gets this bad name is because after all this trouble it has had, the club has always remaind open, unlike other clubs like Uropa which closed down after a stabbing. So the longer it stays open, the worse its reputation will get if there is any other instances of trouble.

As another user said if you dont look for trouble you certainly wont get any trouble. Ive never seen or had any trouble in niche. Well nothing that bad anyway, of course ive seen the odd scuffle.

Also because of the name that niche has, if anything happens it is almost certainly going to be reported and spread around. unliuke some other clubs where I have seen bad trouble but never seen anytrhing in the media about it. ie banos, Kingdom, Gatecrasher

I used to go regularly about 3-4 years ago, there was quite a bit of trouble then but it seemed to calm down.

Got the music sussed but if you go around looking for trouble then your guna get it. from personal experience dont make eye contact. a hell of a lot of ppl who goto niche. pill. so if you give them a look, dosnt have to be a nasty or dirrty look, jus a look your asking for it. keep ya eyes 2 yourself. also i wudnt go their thinkin your 10men either cuz 10men will come get you. i hope im not puttin you off. im a big niche'r. i love it. id also go in a big group rather just like 2 or 3. saftey in numbers

Dont know if I'm misunderstanding you - but why are people more out for fight at Niche if they're on pills? Most other places I've been to where people are on pills - the worst you'll have to put up with is someone rambling on about how they're your best mate, even though you've just met them...

Come on, there reallys inst as much trouble at Niche as people make out. Its been open since the beginning of time, surely that says something.

Ive never had any trouble in there. Yes Ive seen trouble, but havent had any myself.

Most the people who are 'pilled up' are too much in a daze too start any trouble, and if anything the ones that are pilledup are the most friendy people. A bit too friendly for my liking, but friendly none-the-less

hmmm good point. There is a difference.

But I still feel that the name Niche has got is over the top and nothing like what its really like.

Just for the record, has anyone actually ever got shot INSIDE Niche?

I remember a shooting last year outside the club. Apart from that havent seen or heard of much else happen in or around Niche.

Oh and for the record also. Ive heard about someone being killed outside Uropa, someone getting beaten half to death inside Gatecrasher, Ive seen someone slashed outside Kingdom, heard of someone being shot in the Arches, seen many many many bottlings in and outside of Purple when it was open. The list is endless.

it's fair to say that poor old owls girl wasn't quite blessed with the brains of most. You're thick as pig **** love - so less of the 'bling bling' and 'me name is owls girls innit' and keep going to niche, so that you're out of my way!

Ive been to niche a few times, the 1st time going was slightley intimadating to start off with, but soon got in the mood. The club plays really good music and didnt see anyone who was starting trouble. I would deffo go again.

how long have you been going to the niche.... ? i use to go 96-2001 and at the last time i was there it was S*it. The vibe had gone, some how i crowd inside ( mainly youths) appear to have lost the plot a little. Perhaps thats down to the niche becoming to commercial, instead of the underground scene it used to have. Or am i just gettin old?

As a DJ at Niche I feel I must address some of the comments that have been made.

Raided regular? Not once in my 5 or so years I've had there.

As for the sort of people it attracts, 1st I'd say it attracts people from lots of different backgrounds but in response to the wannabe gangsters & chavs that might be looking for trouble.

It's all about making people feel safe and I honestly think that happens now, the world we live in has changed lots over the last 5 years and so has Niche in an effort to address this.

It may have had some incidents in the past but the important thing is they constantly worked to put it right without taking the easy option of changing music policy.

In the last year or 2 we have seen improved lighting, a new security friendly entrance, improved searches including metal detectors, new hours, a change in dress policy and increased security presence.

This is why Niche survives because they address issues and work closely with local authorities in making it a well managed venue.

:P

I have been to Niche about 10 times and the music is ace, the only thing that I dont like is the trouble.

Last time we went we got searched three times going in, then just has we were going in the alarm bell went off with a red light flashing, then all the staff at the front door went running in and someone was took out with blood everywhere. And the staff wear bullet prof jackets.

Can honestly say that I didnt go in after that.

Havent been myself, but a mate of mine went on his own and got bottled and then mugged in the toilets.

The police said after that it wasnt an uncommon occurence, especially if you were seen as an easy picking (which in his pie eyed state he was)

At one time there also seemed to be a disproportionately large amount of drive by shootings going on there as well.

On the flip side, the music is supposed to be excellent. But I am not sure how much it would be enjoyed if you spent all night staring at our shoes!

Fair points about the muggings and whatever

but surely if it was really as bad as people make it out to be it would have been closed down ages ago, which it aint so it cant be that bad
