Hi could anyone tell me whether it's ok to introduce a new cat to an existing pet. Like, get a new kitten when you already have a grown-up cat. Obv. you'd have to keep them separate while the kitten settles in, but would it then be ok to introduce the two cats gradually?
Of course! It's always advisable though to make sure the grown up cat is allowed to have free roam of the house whilst it is the kitten who is restricted.
Let the cats get used to each other's smells before they get used to eachother (maybe try showing each cat the other cat's bed etc) and then let them meet. Animals are generally very good at sorting out a pecking order and though you may have to supervise at first, the older cat will put the kitten in it's place (and you shouldn't stop it doing this).
Try pm-ing Medusa from the forum, she is the cat expert
I've found in the past that introducing a kitten to cats isn't normally as hard as introducing fully grown cats.
The kitten shouldn't get too much hassle and will soon learn it's place. I've seen older cats take care of the kitten before and on the odd occasion I've seen older cats dislike the kitten and knock it about a bit. As long as you are there to supervise for a while and make sure the disputes at feeding times are minimal then you should be ok.
Don't get involved too much though, the cats must sort out who's incharge and won't do this if everytime they argue you get involved. Only step in if it's serious enough to warrant you doing so.
We introduced a cat to our two cats and for about 6 months there were fights between the two females. They tollerate each other now and occasionally smack each other, but most of the time they are ballanced out in the hirarchy.
Our two cats loved eachother as kittens and now they won't be in the same room together unless they're really hungry!
They just need to sort themselves out and if they don't get on, they'll let eachother know when the other's crossed the line and will generally keep out of eachother's way.
Thanks for all the advice
