I have had one of these plants in a pot all summer on the decking which has flowered beautifully. My dad says I have to take it inside during the winter as they don't like the frost, which is no problem but I read an article in one of the weekend papers which says I have to lift it from the soil and split the roots and all sorts. Can anybody clarify what I have to do to get this thing through the winter?

There's a bit of advice on the BBC website about caring for them over the winter:

Winter protection

Come the autumn frosts, cut off the foliage and dig up the rhizomes, cleaning off the soil. Store them in dry, soilless compost in large pots in a frost-proof place (for example, a garage). They can be started into growth again in March.

That sounds a lot like the advice you saw in the paper... I think unless you know someone who has successfully got a canna through the winter by just lifting it inside / wrapping it in fleece, I'd go with the treatment recommended by the BBC. It sounds quite involved but I'm sure it'll be worth it to keep your canna going! How big is it, out of interest? (I've just seen the bit on the BBC that says that they can get to 6ft high!)

What is this plant like ? Is it a patio plant ? With having to take it in.Sounds a nice plant to me. What is the colour etc;
