I live in the Charnock area which is a stones throw from Gleadless Valley but didn't move here until early 80's tho.
I always liked the estate and used to drive round hoping to find a house for sale, which seemed a rarity then. I knew it was a good place to live if no-one wanted to move away!

We moved to the gleadless valley in 1961 and the family home is still there, what used to be the showpiece of europe is now in the same decline as the rest of sheffield, all the same pubs are still there minus the G V wmc which is now a jehovas witness hall.
we used to have a good saturday night starting in the wyvern, on to the far lees, up to the cutlers, the the wine lodge, stopping off at the nailmakers before heading for the john'o'gaunt, down to the horse & groom before staggering up to the blackstock then back to the wyvern for the last orders.

My family lived in Gleadless for a while. We moved there in 1982 and lived there for about 10 yrs or so. We lived on Hollinsend Road, right at the bottom of Gleadless Common in the detached house across from the new Inn pub.

I lived in Blackstock Drive from 1955 to 1981. When we first moved the nearest bus was at Graves Park and I used to walk there and back every day - not so bad during the summer but murder in the winter.

Used to enjoy going in the Bagshawe when it was a proper pub i.e. before Yates. Spent many happy hours in the Norton Oaks cricket pavilion drinking an excellent pint of Mansfield.

I was born onto Gaunt Close, in 1964, my grandma's immediate next door neighbours were called Dewsnap, and we lived directly behind a family called Palfreyman.

My grnadparents had been moved on there after slum clearance on Fawcett Street, Netherthorpe.

at the age of 2, I and my family moved to one of the top-floor maisonettes on Gaunt road, that was the spring of 66.

My sister arrived in the august of 66.

We lived there until 1974. I went to Constable Road School.

I remember our ceiling coming down, because one of those huge circular brick water tanks, which was situated on the roof of above us, burst, and flooded us out. (the tank was for the district heating system, which served each group of three blocks of maisonettes, by some sort of gravity feed, to the bottom block of the three, which housed the heating mechanism)

names I remember from my childhood are:
the Wells family, who lived in the flat directly under ours. children Denise and Steven

the Fox family, children Alison and Sean.

the Ludlam family, (daughter Julie)

the Steele family, children Jennifer and Mark.

I remember the Deakins, I was in the same class at school as Jacqueline, and I shared my birthday with Jacqi's mum, Brenda.

There was Nigel Potts, (same age as me) mother june, who lived on ironside road.

and I remember a family called Costello, who lived further up the road from us. My parents used to knock around with them,

I also was friends with a girl called Julie Paterson.

There was also the Swain family, Lilian, and Syd, (who were honorary uncle and aunt to me and my sister) their children were Christopher, Peter, and Kay.

I used to go to brownies with a girl in my class, Jane Freeman, I used to envy her hair sooo much, she had a dark, thick long plait, and I had thin, short, blonde hair... lol (isn't it funny what you remember?)

I have quite a few names, like Jane Marsden, who I remember and would like to name but i have to stop here as my OH is needing to get me off out and into the car... :(

I went to live on Blackstock road in 1959 after being rehoused due to slum clearance from Oborne Street, Pitsmoor. The Infant/Junior school on Bankwood was not quite finished so my sister and I had to go to Arbourthorne school for a time,we moved to Middle Hay Close after a couple of years and I then went to Gleadless Valley Sec Modern but left whilst in the first year (1965) and moved to Parson Cross.

It's a long while ago now and I haven't been to that side of town for a very long time but I remember a lot of woodland and wide open spaces,it was very rural compared to Pitsmoor.

I don't have such a good memory, but some names from my early school days are:

Stanley Lake, John Spotswood,Cynthia Spafford,The Drabble family (lived next door)The Dawn Family, Peter Kitson,Anne Theaker,Tony Major,Keith Sykes,Carol Charlesworth,John Cadwallander,Carol Bland, Susan Keyworth and a few more.

What I do remember is the year I got roller skates for christmas, it was the only year we had snow on Christmas eve and on the day itself it was thick with snow, hence useless present, apart from that my memories are all good ones.

Well, isn't synchronicity weird?

a couple of days ago, I had posted the above comments, and memories about families, who lived in close proximity to me as a child.

The really strange thing was, after I had made these posts, on Tuesday, and had brought these childhood friends to mind, Mr pt and I went out for a meal, on Wednesday night.

Lo, and behold, who should walk into the restaurant, but two of the very people I had mentioned in my post, who I had not seen in donkey's years.

It was lovely to have a gossip, and catch up with them. They were in the restaurant, to celebrate the birthday of my honorary uncle (he was also given an honorable mention in the post, too!).

I love it, when something like that happens.

(not strictly Gleadless stuff, but, partly related to the above incident
A similar thing happened, about three weeks ago, now.

I had been thinking ever such a lot, on a friend of mine, another pal whom I had not managed to be in contact with for the longest time. I was stunned, when, trundling through the market, on an errand for work, I bumped into her whilst she was doing some shopping. again, it was lovely to catch up with her.

We lived on middle hay place and played football on the garages opposite the wyvern pub, some of the names we knocked about with were phil booker ( bucket ) stephen wood ( spud ) the anderson twins, the woods from the maisonettes the garages were under, tony slack ( tackman) the ords, websters, endersby, just a few off the top of my head most of them went to hurlfield school, we went to st pauls, the place seems so much smaller now but the memories are still large.

I can remember a family called Wood who lived above us in the maisonettes, they used to throw anything from nappies to televisions over the landing, we lived at the side of a family called Dunkley and in the next block I had a boyfriend for a couple of days called Keith Sykes, I think I fancied his brother(I Was only 11 at the time)

oh, twinky,

Taggy's ice cream was just heaven!

whether in a cone, or a "sandwich" (i loved the chocolate, and the jam wafers that you could get for ice-cream sandwiches, it was sheer bliss.

Taggy's was the only ice cream my mother would eat.

I remember their depot was near anns road school, somewhere between gleadless road and richards road.

I am also the same age as Mick, we went to school together for a time, either junior or senior school or perhaps both. I went to Bankwood Jnr and GVSM.

I lived at the side of the steps, the first maisonette our neighbors were called Dunkley, a brother and sister both had ginger hair but I can't remember their names.

We moved from Gleadless when I was 11 or 12 which would be 1964/5.

The family we exchanged with were called Johnson, they were friends of my parents, I don't know how long they lived there but they did move back to Parson Cross, thier kids are Michelle and Mark but will only be 37/38ish.

When I did live at Middle Hay Close my sister and our friends used to play all the time on the steps, we used sing and dance
and pretend we were on stage, we sang "we love you Beatles oh yes we do" etc; we also sat there with the lads, when they weren't playing football.

I might have left the area before you lived there......or you could be the little lad from the next block up who I thought was even better than George Harrison,he used to bang his football on the garage doors.............?????

Hi Sally,

Did you go to Gleadless Valley S.M, I was only there for the first year, we left to go to Parson Cross to be near my mothers sister.

I am on Friends Reunited but its for Colley S.M, I didn't register for GV as I didn't think anyone would remember me, but I'm sure if I remember names from the long and distant past they must as well.

dee, I had Mr PT drive me down gaunt road, about a fortnight ago. someone had told me that the maisonettes were demolished, and I wanted to see for myself.

It made me feel a bit emotional, to see the blank spaces where the maisonettes were all the way down.

At the time we drove past, there was only one of the maisonette blocks still standing, nad that was being torn down. there was nothing left of the other blocks, at all.

The maisonette block I lived in was the third from the bottom of Gaunt Road, opposite the end of Gaunt Way.

I remember what we called the "back-field", which was behind the maisonettes, between them and the wood/ golf course.
It was a nice playing field, with some gorse bushes scattered around, and there was a kidney-shaped, gravelled/ hard-cored area, a sort of "hardstanding" for ball games, bike-riding etc. All I could see of the field area the other day, when we drove past, was a horrid, overgrown mess, and yobboes on trail bikes roaring about all over.

I have memories of that hardstanding, that are a bit painful, too.

I was about 2.5/ 3 yrs old, and Jeanette (Steele) and Denise (Wells) took me on to the hardstanding area.

Some (sightly older, about 5 yrs old) boys were playing with toy cars/ fire engines.

They had built houses/ garages for the toy cars out of brick and stone.

I went to look at the cars beneath the stone, and one of the boys got mad with me. The boy picked up a half house-brick, and hit me in the face with it. He got me smack on the nose, and my nose started pouring with blood. It wasnt pleasant at the time.

As you say, dee you would not recognise the area today, it was so different, that day I went past.

Dee, you know, it's just something that happens...

Kids fight, often... I don't think the lad actually *meant* to do as much damage to me as he did... At least, I hope there was no malice in his actions!! i am wondering, now! lol)

I was left with a legacy of frequent, severe nosebleeds, which can be triggered by almost nothing

I can't remember whether the the boy had any aftermath, I just remember howling like mad, Jeanette, who'd only be about seven, herself (IIRC) taking me to her dad, as quickly as she could to be tidied up, and my nose being bloodied as heck! lol. I remember jeanette being upset that i was hurt.

I think it was just a "fit of childish temper" really.

does anyone remember the old G V W M C being built ? and gleadless road being straightened out and by-passing the maisonnettes instead of going round by them, we used to play football at the bottom of gleadless road where newfield farm close overlooks now. We used to live up the hill at the side of the old quarry just above the cutting which took you up to myrtle springs, the old toll bar was at the brow of gleadless road when we moved there and the house was still standing but derelict, where the toll bar estate is now is where we used to play on the old allotment site, we used to climb up the quarry before they filled the bottom of it in and reduced the height by half.

I also remember the alteration of Gleadless Rd. Do you rember the garden hut that was put up to sign up members for the Gleadless Valley Club? it was a pity it had to close through mis-management. I live on Spotswood Close and these Maisonettes were like heaven when we moved here in 1967, it was a time when everybody was house proud not like now with rubbish thrown everywhere, curtains never drawn back, windows never cleaned and most of the residents cannot speak unless swearing is involved. How an Estate like this can sink to such depths is beyond me.

That would be the 'Bean' then, played many a game of footy on there :)

Why has no-one replied to peterdo?

Yes, White Lane still exists but it's got trams running down it! Don't know if you are old enough to remember the old trams, they're nothing like them, much more up to date and 10 times better than the buses.

Are you old enough to remember the old Azena ballroom where the Beatles once played, thats now a supermarket.

The Red Lion is still at the top of White Lane and the Old Harrow at the bottom, they are still much the same as they used to be.

Did you ever go to the library, that's been rebuilt completely and now has a medical centre at the side of it.

Both my parents were brought up in Gleadless and some of my aunts/uncles still live in the area.

My Dad's family moved to Gleadless after getting cleared out of the back to back houses down near the stokes shop (near Moorfoot). My grandma's house was brand new when she moved in and she still lives in the same house now 40 odd years on.

Hi young_prr.

Yes, I remember Peter. Hung around with him a lot in early to mid 60s. Remember his mum and dad. Wonderful folks.

Went to Central Tech with Peter. Great times!

Used to play in the quary up Gleadless Rd, Lees Hall Woods and Rollestone Woods. Must have covered miles together in the company of Steve Sorby and Steve Neely.

How's he doing?

Click on this link. He's in this picture (Rollestone Junior School c1962)....second from left, back row:thumbsup:

Just read through all the string on this topic and recognise quite a few names, Stan Lake, Peter Reaney, used to go to school at Rollestone with Peter, in fact I have a photograph of him, me and Paul Fisher posing in swimming trunks 'NOT A PRETTY SIGHT'
Brought back memories when I noticed one reference to playing in the woods and the old quarry on Gleadless Hill.
I used to live on Leighton road in the maisonettes next the the Wyvern.
Horace Williams and Evelyn were good friends with my parents.
My mother still lives on Spotswood Drive.
Seem to remember that we used to have a lot snow on the valley. I lived there from about 1960 until 1979 with absence to South Africa between 1975 to 1977.
Had a cousin that lived on Gaunt Road.
Also remember Christine Goodlad and Pamela Hewitt from down by the Horse and Groom.
Keith Kidd was also a good friend and we had some great laughs. I also remeber the Sykes brothers and the Ords, Mick Pat, Tony.
Dave Wild from behind the Far Lees was also a friend.

To answer the original question, Yes I was born on Morland Close at Herdings in 1959 and lived there until 1994 so that covers the years you were questioning.

I went to Herdings Primary & Gleadless Valley Secondary, both gone, was it something I did wrong?

They used to run bus tours out to Derbyshire from Pond Street and deliberatly go through Gleadless Valley to show it off.

When my Mum & Dad (who still live there) got their new council house as they were then, my mum took my Gran up to see it on the 101 bus and she said "what do you want to live out in the wilds for?"

Angela moved to Canada and lived in the US for a while, had 2 daughters and now lives back in sheffield. Iris is happily married with 2 boys and a daughter and now lives in Treeton. I am very sorry to hear about Peter dying. My condolences!

Take it from me that he was a gutsy kid, loyal as a friend and 'being cheeky' was about as misbehaved as he got.

I recall us both setting off for Rotherham one day - we were about 13 - on foot, with sandwiches and a map. Where did we end up? BEIGHTON!! Didn't have a clue where Rotherham or Beighton were, so assumed we hadn't wandered too far off course.:( We used the few pennies we had on us to get a bus back....ended up in Pond Street....and had to walk back to the Valley.

Like idiots, we told our respective mums about our adventures....and got grounded:mad: They thought we were only going to Graves Park!! God knows what the map was of...knowing us, it was probably of Birmingham!!!

Great days young_prr, made better by the friendship of your late dad:thumbsup:

Keep reading the Forum, and I'll try to recall some other 'adventures' / 'misadventures' for you.

Hi,
Yes did all the football thing. Had one of the garages later.
Remember Tony Slack, and the Crockers, Neil and Keith Sykes.
Lived downstairs and knocked around with the Ords.
Horaces son Stan had the Wyvern.
I know the Ords went to St Pauls Catholic School, and I believe that Mick, sadly gone now, married Carol Booker, brother was Phil.
At some point Mick used to see June Leaper who lived in the houses on the bank above the maisonettes. Stephen Hill on the block after the Wyvern was once married to my Cousin.
Also remember Chris and Darryyl Gardener and Martin Laycock

herdings school merged with constable roadschool, recently, and a new school was built on the site of herdings school.

it's now called "Valley Park Primary".

I had a maisonette on Leighton rd, for a while, but it was not pleasant at that time, with the anti social element that we had next door.

Yes, the wonderful thing about the design of the Valley, and the buildings that were put up was that they used the beautiful natural landscape and woodland, and the estate won loads of awards for the design.

it was lovely, growing up on the Valley. really idyllic. I was there from birth to the age of 10, moving off there, in 1974.

It ws a huge pity that the estate was permitted to go to rack and ruin, with the druggies and "Undesireables".

Names that come to mind include Trevor Fox, Pete Frost (who I believe still lives on Spotswood Road), Mick Siddall and his sister Christine - she was lovely, Alison Thorpe and her cousin Margret Gillespie - coowheeeeee!!!!
Others that come to mind include Alan Fell who was my co-host when we went into DJing in the 70's - Anybody remember the Royal Oak at Intake Tuesday Nights ??? Alan lived on the maisonettes near the Wyvern. Philip Brooke (the rocker), who, I believe went on to become a Doctor.
Mick Dawn lived on Plowright somewhere. I still see him 'cos he goes in the Queens Road Club.

Its amazing how The Valley draws you back, as, following 2 years away, at the beginning of Feb 1979, I was back on the Valley, this time in my own place, and I've been there ever since.

I must be mixing you up with someone else, as that name does sound familiar, but time can play tricks on anyone, especially me (memory like a sieve etc).

Young_prr mentioned Peter Reaney was his dad. I remember Peter from when we lived near each other on the Arbourthorne. I remember Peter going past our house in the car with his dad & apparently because he was fiddling with the door handle, he fell from the car whilst it was moving.

Just one of many memories of Peter.

I remember him well & he was a good mate.

I used to live opposite the Wyvern as well and remember very well the games of footie that went on under our window. Very noisy they were, especially when the ball was slammed into the garage doors.
What a pity there werent computers around then then we might have got a bit of peace.......:)

I can remember the Hinchcliffes and I'm Michelles mom.:D

I never thought this post applied to me......but it does! I have so enjoyed reading it all the way through. I lived on the maisonettes on Mawfa crescent from about 1975. I was a single Mum at that time. Then I married and we did a swap into a house on Gibbons drive in about 1982/83. We left the area in 1985. My eldest went to Constable road infants/juniors and then onto Gleadless valley sm.
I remember so many of the names mentioned on this thread. Many of them went to school with my Daughter. She started school in about 1975/76. I remember the harsh winter when our shops were running out of food and the fuel truck couldn't get to the school. We all went out and "dug" a path through the snow so that the school could have fuel.
They were good days and I loved my maisonette. Everybody pulled together in those days. Neighbours were neighbours and we all helped each other. I remember when the old peoples sheltered housing was built next to us. I think it is called Orpen house. There was a path running between Orpen house and our maisonettes. I used to love to hear the regulars walking up that path on their way home from what was then the Bagshaw (?). They used to shout "nite love" to each other.
I felt safe there and it was a great place to bring children up in.
I have many happy memories of the valley. It is so sad to hear that it has fallen into dis-repair just like so many other areas of Sheffield. I know the school has been pulled down and that alone is a bad thing.
Gleadless Valley worked and it worked well so what went wrong? It used to be a thriving community where everybody knew everybody else and they all pulled together. Everybody who lived there stood a chance......and that is what is missing in today's society. It is so sad and I feel very sorry that it is not like it was when I lived there. All four of my children were born there even if only 2 of them went to school there.
I used to love walking through the back paths with my pram on my way to the library down by the john o gaunt. My Gran used to live in the maisonettes opposite the gaunt. She had one of the basement bed sits. Ironside road I think it was.
If you saw a child doing something he/she shouldn't be doing you wouldn't think twice about stopping them. AND.......there was no swearing or finger language off them because they knew full well that you probably knew their parents and would tell on them. THEN......they would get a clip around the earoles........none of this business denying that their precious Jonny didn't do it back then.
I also remember taggy's............nothing to replace that ice cream ever is there?
Ahhhhhh.........thankyou all for a wonderful trip down memory lane.

A lot of the decent families started to move out after the Council started putting idiots on the Estate, subsequently they atracted there mates then it was a downward spiral from then to now, we now have all night partys with music blaring out without a thought of other people and the ones resposible are people that are either asylum seekers or people re-housed from Pitsmoor ( so I have been informed).
The Estate is in a steady state of decline with druggies everywhere, vandalism is rife by the younger kids who know that if they are caught they will get off scott free. This was a beautiful Estate from the very first time building was started, I worked on the flats near the Cutlers in 1959/60 and i moved on to it 38 years ago and Im still here. I like my home and I will not move because of unthinking Tenants.

Dropped my son off at his mate's house on Overend **** tonight. He's sleeping over as his mate has just moved there so they are 'missing each other'.:(

Anyhow, as I pulled up to drop them off at about 5pm ish, there were kids everywhere. Some carrying golf clubs, some with shovels and some with sticks. They all stopped doing whatever it was they were doing and just stared at us. It was like a scene from Lord of the Flies....unnerving to say the least. After I'd driven off just about everyone I drove past - man, woman, child, pet dog - watched me as I passed. It was similar to the film Deliverance, only there were more of them.

I am now sat here hoping that my 13 year old son isn't 'squealing like a hog', or covered in warpaint and hunting rabbits with his bare hands.

Believe me, that place has changed since 1960 - 1970.

Still looks good, but the natives are scary.:( :help:

I grew up on Overend **** and believe me it's a world of difference from the nice place I enjoyed growing up.

The kids are not controlled by their parents which has led to a break down of the social structure on that once quite little section of Gleadless Valley.

They need come form of police presence round their constrantly IMO to get things back on an even keel.

Tell me, did you drop your son off up the steep hill section or near the field with the Oak Tree?

Hi DaB,

Dropped him off at the top of the dead-end where there is enough room to swing a car around 180 degrees.

According to my son's mate his mum doesn't park near the house because the local kids play football in that turning area and don't care if there's a car there already.

It is just possible some of you Gleadless Valley ex pats can help me. Someone has contacted me about a house exchange: she lives on Landseer Drive, near Herdings Park.

If you lived in a house similar to this, could you give me an idea about the size and layout of the downstairs of these 3 bed houses.

Also, whats it like there now?

PS I briefly lived on Abney Drive with my in laws in 1978, my partner grew up there (Mark Mannion, the good looking one!) and remembers the Hinchcliffes mentioned earlier in this thread.

I remember their depot was near anns road school, somewhere between gleadless road and richards road.

"Taggy" was my mother's cousin. His real name was Jack Battle I understand the nickname "Taggy" came from his school days.

He and his sister Mabel lived together at 27 View Road with brother Ernest a few doors below. The dairy was in the back yard where the ice cream was made entirely from Jersey Milk.

They had a small shop on Gleadless Road which was run by Mabel and several vans which toured the area at weekends. In fact I believe they covered most of Sheffield.
A van or trailer was usually parked at the entrance to Graves and other Sheffield parks.

Hello anyone here from Gleadless Valley from 1962 to 1970 if so send message :D  :headbang:
Hi there !

I have lived on the "Valley" since 1978 - a bit later than you are interested in
but thought you would like to know it's still there and not much changed I
suspect. Loads of people have bought their houses and so not everything
looks the same, but the basics are still there. I live in the dip by the bridge on Blackstock Road, the Horse and Groom not far away. The "John Of Gaunt"
has a chequered history, keeps getting closed down by the police for harbouring the unwanted - but there you g:thumbsup: o that's life.

Although not having lived in Gleadless, I did date a young lady called Caroline Hoskins from that area in the mid 60's. I lived with my parents at Birley Moor, not too far away. At the end of most dates I would often run to catch the last bus at a nearby park, usually missing it and having to walk home.

We eventually got engaged and took a two week holiday to Italy - when overseas trips were cheap! But, our relationship didn't last and we went our seperate ways.

I had a cousin living in Linley Lane. She was married to Dave Allen. Her name was Jean. I haven't had news of her whereabouts for almost 30 years now.
