These are the instructions for dyeing yarn using Kool Aid which beansforyou has used successfully, and which she posted in another thread. I thought they deserved a thread of their own, so they don't get lost in that one. The following is copied from her original post. Thanks beansforyou :) .
I find the instructions for hand dying yarn on the net a bit long winded, I did kind of follow what has been said before, but as i've gone along i've found this is the easiest method for dying a batch of fibre the same colour:
1. Use 1 sachet of Kool Aid - 1oz of fibre.
2. Soak Fibres in clean warm water, just sit the fibres on top of the water and leave it to sink, don't stir!
3. Get a zip-lock bag (sandwich bag) empty sachet/s of Kool Aid in and add water, enough to submerge the fibres. Zip up and give it a swish around to mix the powder.
4. gently squeeze out excess water from fibres, then drop into the zip lock bag, give it another genlte squish to make sure fibre is submerged.
5. place the Zip Lock bag in a microwave proof bowl, just to keep it stable. Do Not Zip up the bag, leave it open at the top.
6. microwave for 2 minutes at a time, until the water has gone clear. put on the side and leave to cool.
I find three 2 minute zaps is usually enough for around 50gram of fibre. If it isn't clear by then, you can always just leave it on the side and the remaining kool aid does dissapear.
Once it's cooled down, rinse in clean water, which is about the same temp. as the water in the zip lock bag.
put somewhere to dry.
If your mixing your colours (tie dying etc) on yarn, then it's a bit more fiddly and Knitty explains it really well, you don't want to end up with alot of sludge brown yarn!
