its a beautiful walk and there's benches along the way, bridges etc. It's nice and quiet.

It's something I keep meaning to do, but it never comes to mind when I'm at a loose end. Plus I need a volunteer to go with me to keep me amused :)

I went on it a couple of years ago when it wasn't exactly finished. It would be a good idea as an urban walk for those who don't want to be hiking over Kinder every weekend!

Shamefully, I work near it but have never ventured more than a few feet down the path. I must rectify that at some point.

I did it a few years ago on my bike, keep meaning to do it again on foot. There's a website if anyone is interested.

I have walked the five wiers many times, down the river to Meadow Hall and back via the canal. Its surprising the amount of wild life and plants that can be found along the walk.

I have done it, considering where it is it is very nice, and plenty of chance to sit down or give up if you can't be bothered.

cycled this route recently and was surprised how nice it was. this would be an ideal walk for the forum, going along the 5 weirs in one direction and back along the canal maybe.
pencilling this one in for the future!

nobikejohn and I did the 5 Weirs Walk last year. We saw mallard, geese, a heron and a kingfisher. Also saw loads of horrible Japanese Knotweed.

I was talking with an Environment Agency guy a couple of weeks ago, and he tells me that funding has been found to tackle the extensive Japanese Knotweed problem, and an eradication programme will commence next year.

The walk is full of historical interest, especially Salmon Pastures. We topped it off by walking the canal towpath to Rotherham (in stages).

We have done the 5 Weirs walk many a time, not all at once tho'
Some parts are really nice, but in some parts it is getting a wee bit overgrown, and needs sorting out. It is a lovely walk tho, plenty of wildlife, and interesting places, although some places you cant see the river for the weeds etc. Nice to see the fig trees in various places.
As a matter of interest does anyone know how many miles it is approximately.

Yes, it looks like it's 5 Weirs for the Unofficial New Years Eve Walk! I'm really looking forward to it - how shameful that I've lived here all my life and never wandered round half the city.

The weir at the back of Load Hog is one of my favourite places of solitude.

That 30 meter stretch of path is so peacefull, the sound of the water masks the traffic noise on Brightside lane and, apart from the odd clang & bang from Forgemasters it's wonderfull

You're not alone on that stretch of the water though Don. :suspect: When we were there the other day there was a small yellow plastic duck bobbing happily about on the weir! No other birds about though, strangely.

Tis true, there's no end of rubbish collects at that weir, rolling over in the surf & making mad little circles in the eddies by the concrete drain.

I think among the biggest things I've seen there are items such as a full pair of ladders, a fridge, gas cylinders, pallats, well, allsorts really :loopy: nutters eh?

I live overlooking the river don at kelham island and I constantly keep going down and clearing up all the crap that gets in the river.

I have a pair of wader and I'm sure I look lovely in them (hahaha)

Me and my husband shifted 15 sachloads of rubbish from the river bank and got streetforece to come and collect it. along with 16 tyres, a huge piece of carpet, a mattress and loads of plastic sheeting (from the damn building sites)

and I have to say, this part of the river is prob now th most attractive. we've put up bird feeders, bird houses - bat boxes, insect boxes etc and since doing this over 2 years ago the wildlife has really boomed.

We've planted over 2000 native bluebells, several hawthorn and firethorn bushes and even a few foxglove for the summer!

I just wanted to share this with you as the upper don walk (which will when completed pass this stretch of river next to the kelham mills development) will become part of the 5 weirs walk...

Hope you like my little piece of heaven - when the walk opens of course!

A lady at work was telling me that her daughter lives in Kelham Island overlooking the river and that they see mink down there. I was quite surprised, apparently they feed on the ducks. :o

thats right - in the spring after breeding season it is rather over - run with them, and its quite distressing to see them eating the ducklings, while mother duck flaps about :(

I started a bit of a mink hating campaign about this last year (there's a thread somewhere about it) and I was on radio sheffield with the wildlife agency talking about ways to reslove the problem as they have devestated the water vole population to almost being extinct!

There is all sorts of life around there - including mink.

The Gardener's Rest have a lot to do with the Upper Don Valley and amongst other things have raised and released some trout back into the river. They also have a regular duck family visiting but sadly most years the ducklings dissapear to the mink. You ever called in Jen? You may know Eddy. :)

I have been in there a few times, and I do know eddy! - top bloke!

He knows all about my little conservation scheme on this stretch of the river - I think I'm classed as 'adopting' it to keep it looking good!!!
