We are putting some pictures up of the dogs available from the Sheffield council kennels. They are on www.rainrescue.co.uk under DOGS AT SHEFFIELD. I believe dogs can only be viewed by appointment - and not just by turning up at the kennels.

Please tell people that these dogs are available and wanting rehoming. The majority of dogs are nice homeable dogs - just maybe not had some basic training or socialisation previously - but if you are prepared to put in a bit of time and effort - many of the dogs will make great pets.

Remember whenever you or anyone you know goes to view a dog in any kennels - that the poor things are stressed out of their heads. The noise, the smells, the changes - play havoc with them - and so odds are they show a different character to the one that they will show in a home. (both good and bad).

The council has their own rehoming criteria - numbers to contact are on the web site - but remember they are always desperate for kennel space and so a dog homed from here - means another dog has a safe kennel to go into tomorrow.

Happy homings.

just thought I would up this thread

loads of lovely dogs down at the council kennels looking for homes if anyone hears of someone wanting one.

Wouldn't it be worth putting it on top so that people know how to get in touch. so many now don't know where the stray kennels are or how to get in touch - it breaks me up to think of so many being left for weeks on end in kennells.

Unfortunately there are so many deserving threads that the place would be overrun with stickies if we made every thread about lost/found animals/animals needing new homes a sticky.

We do need to let all of the relevant threads have a try at the top.

the dogs on there will mostly likely change a lot.
We are asking them if they will keep us up to date with them as they go and as new ones come. at the rainrescue web site we try to keep it really fresh with what is looking for a new home NOW.
Hopefully they will keep it up to date.
All the nice cute little dogs and especially if they are good with kids - are usually snapped up straight away. its those with a few issues, that need a bit of tlc and patience that stik around bless them.

I really, really try and not look through the dogs, because I can't have another one :(

But I just had a quick peek, how hard is this gorgeous lady trying to look all smart and proud for a new home here (http://www.rainrescue.co.uk/resources/_wsb_200x293_100_0544.JPG)

she is a star isn't she

she is at newark
the result of a family crisis - and out she went.

she has been barking when she first came in - but settling into the routine now - lets hope her new home sees her on the site soon. I have never ever known an October as bad as this one is - rehoming is at an all time low. trying to work out ways how to promote the site to GOOD homes.

She sits the same way my dog sometimes sits when he's feeling all proud :)

I hope you find homes for them all soon, now the winter is on it's way it's awful to think of them in kennels, Rupert (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/jmb123/woopy-1.jpg) my dog is from Hoylandswaine kennels and I couldn't imagine him ever going back, he looked so miserable when he was there :(

I have noticed a big increase in animals looking for new homes over the past few weeks on this and other forums, it must be a nationwide thing :(

good luck :)

the majority of dogs in kennels are stressed. By their very nature - they want to be with people - and the noise and environment in the pounds just drives them crazy. Even once they get into rescue - its only slightly better. Most want to be on a carpet - with a family or people around them - and going for walks during the day to use up their energy.

I think one of the reasons that you are seeing more is that so many more are using the internet to rehome dogs. If people can see what the dogs look like before they get to kennels - they have a rough idea if its right for them or not. Often people buy a puppy because it is just so much easier, and so much less stressful for the people as well. They don't have to leave behind the other dogs - which is horrid for everyone. If they know there is a slight chance that there will be the right one there for them - then we can encourage more people to adopt a rescue dog and hopefully reduce the number of puppies being bred (some dream eh).

Thats why we encourage other rescues to keep sending us pictures to our web site even if they don't have one of their own.

Hi,

This is my first post on SF but have been reading the pet section for the last couple of weeks as me and my partner were thinking of re homing a rescue dog, and was interested on everyone's thoughts. I found the Mayflower Rescue Centre through rainrescue. We went up yesterday and after looking at all the dogs, we were there for about 2 and 1/2 hours, we kept goingback to the same one, Lara is a 2 year old Staffy X, she is beautiful and a big softie, we filled in all the adoption papers and are just awaiting a home visit. We went back again today and spent another couple of hours with her. I would urge people thinking about buying a dog to go to a rescue home first.

I can't agree more

Jennie who runs the Mayflower works herself into the ground. They have so many dogs in, - all of them well cared for and rehomed as well and caring as ever can be.

Its all worth doing if we just manage to get some more people to take on a rescue dog, and better still - not breed that extra litter.

Still hoping to get Sheffield to keep their pictures up dated - will try again tomorrow.

Hi again,

I spoke to a lady called Josie on email for a week before we went over, and she was who i spoke to while there. You're right they all do fantastic work. It nearly broke my heart walking in there and seeing all the dogs and hearing their stories. I know I've made the right decision in choosing to adopt a rescue dog. Will let you know when she comes and how she settles in.

Hi Just wanted to let you all know we passed home visit yesterday!! Lara came home today! What a great birthday present. She has settled in so well, at the moment she is fast asleep in her bed, she knew what it was as soon as she walked into the house. Only thing is she's not too keen on our cockatiel!!! But she is a quick learner and when we tell her 'NO' she knows. She is such a big softie. When i work out how to post a photo I will let you see her.

Thanks for all advice on SF, if not for this we may not have Lara now!! Lara was found by a member of the public, wandering down the middle of a dual carriage way and i really don't understand why anyone would want to let her go, she is a very obedient and loving dog.

I would recommend to anyone looking for a dog to go to a rescue centre, there are so many great dogs looking for great homes. It was through SF i found Mayflower sanctuary and my Lara!!

Well done Shelagh
and thank you for being responsible enough to research the sort of dog you want and realise - older dogs make great pets too.

The mayflower is lovely - it is run by Jennie and Josie and they take in loads of lovely dog - dumped by owners all over the place.

I just wish more people would support these small rescues instead of the big national rspca's, pdsa', blue cross and dogs trust - not one of which is operating around our area at the moment. If we could all just recieve the local donations - we could manage -

hope all goes well through your teething stage.
good luck
jacquie

thanks Jacquie,

Lara really is a lovely dog, very loving, very obedient and VERY playful! She absolutely adores it when we pick up her ball and throw it, we can carry on for an hour!!! At the moment she is on a short lead as she tends to pull a bit but is getting better every day, I've bought her an extendable lead but have decided not to use it until she knows her limits.

Jennie and Josie from the Mayflower have said that if i need ANY advice just to give them a call. I'm determined to nip any problems we may encounter in the bud. She will NOT be going back into kennels.

Thanks again Jacquie
