In Luton......it's now to be known as ....'Luminos'
In Glasgow.......'Shine On'......or more recently 'The Winter Festival'
In Birmingham...........'Winterval'
And here in Sheffield the 'City Light's'
I'm talking about the Christmas Illumination's.
Just read that the respective local council's..have decided to re-name festive events so as not to upset people who are unable to celebrate the Christmas festivities as we do.
Now i'm clocking on towards 40............ever since i was a nipper....the Sheffield CHRISTMAS lights (or Illuminations)is all i've ever known them be called.
Our loony councillors don't want the word Christmas mentioned in case it offends !!
I'm sure there was a banner hung from the Town Hall balcony the other year wishing us all a happy 'ede'.
Boots on't wrong feet me thinks !!
'smile don't let the buggers grind you dwn'
Aren't we forgeting the true meaning of Christmas? You know, the birth of Santa.
I think we should make it a more accepting and all-inclusive holiday and call it 'Funmas!'. Much more appeal.
The world stays the same, just the people who wish to run our lives gat crazier....
The Political Correctness Police don't want to attach anything to 'traditional' beliefs.
I have no problems with my city celebrating Eid, Beltaine, Christmas, Yom Kippur, Diwali, Easter, whatever.
I'm more concerned about the increasing commercialisation of festivals, but that's another issue. The UK is, however, still nominally a Christian country (I know the statistics of the growth of religions - it's still a legal and constitutional fact, however) and so I'd like to see celebrations put in to this context. To remove 'Christmas' from civic celebrations of that time of the year is quite ridiculous if the civic authorities still retain the use of teh festival names in other celebrations.
So....go one way or the other. Either replace all civicly recognised festivals with a meaningless 'inoffensive' name, or replace none of the names. To just pick on some is bigotry and bias.

i agree, just as long as i get a holiday out of it
Who cares what councillors want to call it!!!????
If you want to call it Christmas lights - then call it Christmas lights.
What they gonna do? - arrest you?
Problem solved.
Chill out.
A far cry from that humble stable in Bethlehem to Meadowhall 2004.
In one colourful dream I unearthed a document confirming the right to graze animals on the land occupied by Meadowhall. And
would dearly like to drive a herd of sheep and goats along the
non-smoking Malls in the pre-Xmas period.
As a member of the LatterDay Solipsists(we don't believe anything exists)I am asking the Council to celebrate our Special Day by not doing anything. The non-bus service is a start. Our police are also responding by failing to patrol the streets between initiatives.
People always ruin Christmas (or Funmas! It'll catch on!) by bringing religion into it! ;)

The looney left council we have don't recognise 'Christmas'. They also don't recognise cleaning the streets, emptying the bins and putting their limited budget to good use.

I am with the simpsons on this one...
let's celebrate "love Day!"
yaaay!
And yes, deanprez, you will have seen a banner wishing our Muslim neigbours a happy Eid. (or "Eid Mubarek") on the town hall, because Eid happened to coincide with the Christmas celebrations the other year.

But the 'mas' element means it's a religious festival....from the Latin 'Missa'
A 'Funmas' would really be a happy-clappy service in a Roman Catholic church :D
I prefer to think of it as a retracted form of the more generic 'mass', like a 'mass of fun' and as such does not have any religious connection.
Don't dis Funmas!!! :D
