Hi there,
I am coming to Sheffield next week to attend a conference. It finishes on Wednesday, the 20th of September. I plan to stay in the area two days more to do hiking in the Peak district on Thursday and Friday (morning). If you have similar interests/plans, do let me know, am willing to do it with a companion. I do not know the exact hiking possibilities so far, I only browsed the web (after my friends informed me that Peak District is a good place for hiking). I am well experienced in hiking , I usually do it in the eastern part of the Alps, where I come from - if interest we could even do some hiking here around some later time.
My contacts: matej_niksic@hotmail.com or SMS: +38631368334
Have a good day,
Matej

Might be worth having this moved to the Forum Walking Group, where I'm sure someone would be interested.

Welcome Matej and I hope you find someone to walk with you.

Check out this link for an idea of what sort of walks you can do in the Peak District

DOBRO DOSLI MATEJ!

Prije da me pitas - Dalmatija; Dubrovnik, Hvar, Split, Montenegro i Mostar. Cutam da Ljubljana je fantastican.

Huh. Sorry. (zao im je. Ha!) :hihi:

Someone thinks I've asked if I'll go out with Matej. Before this turns into the SF date-international group, and to not get banned for being (ahem) "clever" - I said:

Welcome, Matej!

I know that the slovenian language is not the same as serbian/croatian, but a lot of the words are good. (I hope you can understand!) Next week, everyone will know better, if they'll be free on the 21st/22nd of September. We are friendly people! I will perhaps be in college. I don't yet know the days.

Before you ask me - (these are the places I've been). I hear that Ljubljana is fantastic!

It doesn't seem so exotic now. :(

Thank you for the link Taxman. It seems the Hathersage area is most easily reachable (by direct train from Sheffield) - do you know any walks there, what would you recommend? It seems the accomodation shouldn't be a problem - there is a hostel.

I am surpriced about the nature of this area - there are no real peaks, right? More plateaus. And it seems to be a kind of a moorland? This is very different to what I am used to, I am looking forward to get to know this landscape.

Have a good start of the week, I am reading this forum from one of the Sheffield's computers next time!

Matej

PS the translation: Purdyamos, I do understand Serbian to some extend, when I was in the primary school also Ljubljana's pupils were learning it, and I still remember some things. The citizens of Ljubljana would beside 'fantastic' add some more adjectives when describing the home city, for example overcrowded with cars, with enormously high prices of flats,... but it is true, we would also call it fantastic - green, rich in architectural styles, physicaly small but big in its soul (the vibrant capital of a nation).

Get the train to Edale and follow the Pennine Way up Jacob's Ladder and across to Kinder Downfall. The views are breathtaking.

Several of us are now walking on this day so you're most welcome to join us! (sent you - Matej - a PM for contact details).

Anyone else up for a walk? Probably 5 - 10 miles, in Derbyshire/the Peak District, hopefully taking in views of the countryside, moorland, villages, whatever. We can tailor the walk to suit the participants, if anyone else would like to join in. I'm sure we could manage to incorporate a craft-centre/pub lunch, otherwise it'll be a packed lunch. PM me or post on the thread! :)

Arrangements moving on for this...

We need to be back in Sheffield for 3.15 pm for child-collecting duties due to a Group Member's commitments. So, meeting somewhere in Derbyshire about 9.15am.

We are picking up a Group Member from Gleadless Townend at 8.30am, if anyone else would like a lift from (and back to!) there?

willman

might be able to make this one. 3.15 finish suits me as well.
where are you meeting?

SHsheff
19-09-2006, 01:45 PM
Well, seeing as I thought it'd be nice to include Matej, I need to wait for him to get back to me. Where we walk depends on whether he has his own transport, wants to make his own way on public transport or would like to avail himself of the offer of a lift from Townend!

I still have your phone number, unless you've changed it recently. Do the last three digits include a 6 and a 4? If so, I'll keep you in the loop either by text or by PM as regards the itinerary once we know what's happening. :)

And the same goes for anyone else interested in joining us!

Dear [SHsheff]
thank you for your replay and invitation. I am surely willing to join you. Unfortunatelly this forum-system doesn't allow me to send you a PM. Leaving Sheffield at 8.45 is fine for me. I have all the "equipment" (hiking shoes, thermo-jacket,... do you think we would need a wind-stopper?), but I do not have a car here. So if someone could pick me up from the train station (the place I know herearound so far), I would ask for it. I can check the e-mail in the late evening again, until then we can be in contact via SMS: from the UK it should be (0?)0.386.31.368.334.
I am looking forward for that walk, thanks to everybody who replied on this thread!

Right, details now finalised and known participants (hopefully!) notified.

Just in case anyone else new to the area would like to join in, we're meeting in Castleton tomorrow morning (PM me for exact details please).

Not a long walk - about six miles - http://www.countrywalker.com/index.htm (check out the view and hill pics in particular) starting with a bit of a climb (haha) to the top of Mam Tor to enjoy the envigorating breeze and wonderful views before dropping back down to Castleton to enjoy a bite to eat in one of the many pubs and cafés.

Then the possibility of checking out one of the caverns for which Castleton is renowned - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castleton "...local caverns, four of which are now open to the public as The Devil's Arse or
Peak Cavern, Blue John Cavern, Speedwell Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern." before a bit of a browse round the gift and tea shops before returning to Sheffield.

Castleton is easily accessible by bus, tho' I'm afraid I can't give details. I'm sure a forumer will step in to assist if anyone needs . We've space in a car from the Gleadless Townend 'pick-up point' (accessible by tram) for anyone who can get there for 8.30!

Just back now - we've had an absolutely brilliant day, perfect walking weather and excellent company. Thanks to Matej for posting his request for a walking partner, as that prompted the event!

Had a most pleasant walk (after the slog up through Cave Dale :suspect:) and enjoyed the views and the refreshing breeze on Mam Tor, pub lunch and a natter then some of us went down Treak Cliff cavern to check out the stalignites and other cavely delights, then coffee in Castleton, then over to Burbage (only three of us left by this time) to catch the sunset and arrive back to the car in the darkening evening.

Such a treat - I am so sorry that those of you who would have enjoyed it couldn't come with us!

We were fortunate in having the Forum Walking Group Unofficial Walk Official Photographer with us, and doubtless he'll be posting his pics in due course.

I fully intend to head off to Slovenia some time in the future to check out the Alpine walks over there, that invitation was an unexpected pleasure from today. Thank you, Matej, it was a privilige to meet you. What a good thing that the Forum came up on your Google search....

Wow what a fab day

Thanks to A N Other and SHsheff for lifts and organisation. Great to meet you Matej and others that I hadn't met before.

Fab scenery, even though it scared the **** outta me due to the height on the way down :gag: I'll have to buy myself a pair of blinkers or something !

Nice pubs and cafe, and I somehow stopped myself from buying huge slices of scrummy looking cakes ! The cavern was lovely and we had a great tour guide and the sunset at Burbage was great too

Will post photos on Saturday and put a message on the thread when they're up. Would do it tonite but I need my ugly sleep owing to 0700 meeting with my boss tomorrow, the perfect start to a 12 hour day at work :)

Talking of photos, the Castleton Photo Society have an exhibition in visitors centre - some fab pics there and great time debating which ones we liked and disliked :)

Nah, it was a once-and-once-only day out! However, I'm sure we can create another equally-good-but-different day out for interested parties... :)

The Castleton Christmas lights start towards the end of November (the 18th?) so we will DEFINITELY have an Unofficial Forum Trip Out for that.

The 'Christmas Lights' are rather lovely to see as dusk falls, before the masses arrive. Maybe we can sort a walk that ends at dusk, with an hour or so in the cafés, gift shops and pubs, then catching a bus home towards the end of the evening? That sounds a most suitable ending to yet another Unofficial Walk! (and perfectly fine for everyone - public transport would be the norm!)

:)

only problem i had was that Grissoms was substantially bigger than mine.
