Having thought about it I'd say about 23% of grass verges should be tarmaced.

Why would you want to tarmac grass verges?

The more we tarmac grass/soil the more flooding happens as the rain can no longer "naturally" seep into the ground.

Should every vehicle that drives onto a grass verge be sent to the crusher?

Old estates built without drives or parking areas, from when nobody had cars, now cause a problem because everybody DOES have cars. Tarmacing the grass verges gives somewhere to park; it does have downsides.

I always say if you can't drive you shouldn't have a car, - but a lot of people who can't drive do have a car and drive it too !

And as for tarmacing verges, - the council can't afford enough of the black stuff to fill all the potholes so the verges don't stand a chance. :D

As a better alternative to tarmac how about using that green hexagonal mesh plastic hardstanding stuff, it bears the load of the vehicle, and the grass can grow through it - two birds, one stone.

If the council can’t afford the black stuff, why not grass all the tarmacked verges? It’d certainly be cheaper. They could use sheep to keep the grass down, or even goats — and horses for the wider ones.

The point is do you agree with your mum? If so you are depriving a few million flat dwellers of a pretty basic right.

Grass Verges - There just a place for dogs to **** on & people park cars there which just become Mud and make everywere look a complete mess.

It would save the council a fortune after there tarmaced as they wouldnt have to pay people to cut them all summer and people could have bigger gardens to combat the drainage problem it might cause

I just can't believe what some people write about parking their car's on the grass verges outside their home's, can anyone tell me what looks nicer than a strip of grass alongside the footpath outside your property? It's got to look better than a piece of bare earth with ruts in where the car has parked or a strip that has been tarmaced. With regard to dogs s------ on the verges, I think the owners are getting the message, most people round where we live now carry a "wilkinsons" bag to put it in although you do see a few who don't, I'm afraid they are no better educated than the dog but we are always going to get them.

I want mine doing. I have a drive...but people are always letting their dogs pooh on it, its covered in rubbish and people drive on it so its always muddy. When we order a taxi it pulls up right oin the side so I have to haul 3 non walkers into the car over the mud and hope I dont fall!

Aparentley you can buy parts of the street ie grass verges off Sheffiled City Council and tarmac them as long as its still left as a right of way

Any examples/prices?

I believe that the bye-laws exist that make parking on grass verges illegal, but that SCC are to timid to enforce the law because someone has suggested that a sign to ban such parking should be put up next to each grass verge.

I am aware of one resident that has offered to pay for such a sign but has been ignored.

Not quite sure of the price but someone I know bought their house from SCC and the grass verges on both corners of the cross roads.

Then when Yorkshire Water dug them up to do some works they got compensation instead of SCC!
