Hi folks

what do you think of the idea being mooted about by Clive Betts re congestion charging in Sheffield

would it be a good idea?

where should charging start?

when should they be in force (time/days etc)

how much should it cost

over to you - i will duck now :)

Don't we already have a congestion charge? How much does the council charge for parking? And people wonder why the city centre is under utililised ?

Most people I know who work in the city centre don't use their cars to get to work anyway!! There is no where too park!! I'm not paying over £8, where i can get the bus for a £2 there and back.

If you've got a car its easier to go to Rotherham markets/town centre or Meadowhall especialy if they introduce a fee to get into the city centre here......madness

Sheffield city center is tiny. The whole technical infrastructure associated with that idea would be prohibitively expensive and how long would it take to bring back that cost?

Sheffield City Centre is already as good as inaccessible via car, I only ever go there if I absolutely have to. There's more convenient shopping had elsewhere.

Stupid idea by wanna-bees who can't even come up with their own crackpot schemes.

I predict that in the next 5 years, Sheffield will have a congestion charge.. And the Sheffield City Council are probebly in on it aswell.

Next time your in the city centre.. just have a little look at all the "new" roadworks that have been going on... They have been designed to make the pavements bigger and the roads smaller, thus causing massive conjestion for the future...

A fine example of this is outsite "Purple" formally know as "Berlins".. The traffic down was bad before, now that the pavements are bigger, and the roads smaller it gets a lot worse...

Yet another money spinner for the government and yet more heartache for the people!!!

I've said this before on the forum..

It's coming.... no doubt about it.

People say that the city centre is tiny but I think it will be over a much larger area. i.e. so called gold routes into town such as Ecclesall road and Abbeydale road. These are pretty congested in the morning and a prime area to get a few quid off people.

To be honest it's the only way people will stop using their cars. This is why I hate it when people oppose the tram extension schemes as that will be really useful in the future.

With a bit of luck these 'gold' routes will hammer Fulwood Road and the like - they can afford it :)

I wouldn't mind paying the charge if they occassionally filled the holes in the road in...

The tram extension on Abbeydale would have killed the cricket square....

If charges are aimed at reducing commuting by car then they're perhaps a good thing, but if they deter shoppers then the council will just be shooting themselves in the foot.

Wasn't there something in the recent transport policy announcement by the govt. that councils who imposed congestion charges would be given more control over local bus companies on questions of routes and timetables ?

Just remembered that someone on Calendar or Look North stated that congestion on Sheffield's roads was less during the first day of the bus strike! Mmm, I wonder!
