View Full Version : Decent Pubs on or near to West St
Can anyone tell me which pub on West St or close by would be suitable for a group of Aussie firemen to use as their local whilst visiting the city? Preferably selling good beer, not the fizz and f**t stuff.
owdlad.
the red deer or the bath hotel are the only "proper" pubs I can think of just off west street.
Would Walkabout (the Australian 'themed' bar) be too obvious a suggestion??!
For 'proper' beer, try the Devonshire Cat on Wellington Street (below Division Street), they sell something like 200 beers.
Or try the Frog and Parrot on Division Street?
Try Sheffpub (http://sheffpub.sheffnet.co.uk/) for some ideas maybe, lists the kinds of beers each place sells too. It's a bit out of date but all the main ones are there, or try Sheffield Pub (http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/)
CaptainSleep 22-07-2004, 15:20 Pubs in that area are red deer, devonshire cat, bath hotel, swim inn, dog and partridge, red house, fagans, three tonnes, all very good pubs in or around that area.
Depends what you want to do with them. These are more your traditional English style pubs
Don't go to Dog and partridge.Grapes or Fagans as these pubs are old old and smelly and are run by halfwits.
I would recomend the Forum although a little typical,,maybe the Fountain Bar as it has the best assistant manager in town,, guaranteed a laugh,,
Also The old Monk, Frog and parrot and Llyods as it's cheap and chearful.

clogginchris 22-07-2004, 15:43 Fagans is one the best pubs there is - good beer, live music and a landlord who is definately not a halfwit - very intelligent bloke.
Red Deer and the Bath Hotel are also worth visiting - real and a real atmosphere.

Not what he said.
No way ,,, if your 22 and not 52 then avoid these pubs..
Unless you like watered down beer and fag burned sofa's.
lol
PuressenceUK 22-07-2004, 15:48 LOL - KitKat you wouldn't know a good pub if one came up and ran you over!!!!!
The Forum (and by the sound of it your sort of 'pub') should be called a bar, as with any trendy establishment.
calm yourself it's only an opinion,,
Forum is not really one of my favourite pubs,, i like to try all of them just giving my view on which ones I THINK to stay away from,
i quite like takapuna, forum, revolution etc - they're pretty good but i doubt that's what you're after...
but there again i haven't been in a 'pub' since moving to sheffield in December
oh well - i'll shut up now
CaptainSleep 22-07-2004, 16:16 well i'm only 25 and i've been in over 200 pubs/bars in sheffield (its a mission to go in all of them by the time i'm thirty). The pubs i've mentioned already are fantastic proper english style pubs.
They all have slightly different atmospheres and are a lot more welcoming than most pubs in the city centre.
carcrash 22-07-2004, 18:01 The grapes and the dog and partridge are 2 good pubs on trippet lane.
The Grapes and Dog are timewarp pubs....
Helloooooo ....22 not 72.
the bar in place of the old revolution is supposed to be pretty good?

The Grapes has bands on most nights of the week and is one of the main venues that local indie/punk bands use...
And seeing as you yourself have already told other posters "calm, its only an opinion" maybe you should take your own advice before flaming? :)
Each to their own.
echo red deer, bath house, Dev Cat, Dog & Patridge. also the Washington (just off behind dev green)
carcrash 23-07-2004, 14:48 I suppose it's down to personal choice and preference. I like proper pubs.
I drink in The Grapes because i know loads of people there. Tufty, the barman is a good mate of mine. Also I'm a music promoter and it is one of the centres that most of the Sheffield music scene goes too. The other being the Classic rock bar.
I aslo drink from time to time in The Bath and the Washington. Both good pubs with good atmospheres.
Herbaliser 23-07-2004, 17:57 I was at school with Tufty 8 years ago. Good lad he is. Grapes is decent, but not somewhere I'd go other than to listen to live music.
Dev Cat my fave at the moment for the quality of its ale.
This pub is changing big time ...New management...new toilets....new vibe...Camre real ales...good food....best music and djs....thre cool will be returning....

Rabbit don't forget these are only the pubs that forum members like there are loads more that we don't use..oh and of course there are clubs, and golf clubs so you might need to stay on after the games to fit em all in. Another thing mate don't bring any of that hogwash that you call beer with you, you know the one that's called four X because you lot can't spell ****:-) sorry mate I couldn't resist that one.

my mate went to the opening night and said the toilets are still s***e and they've just done the place up a bit...
Fantomas 02-08-2004, 12:09 It's true they haven't done much with the Washington yet apart from a lick of paint and some new art but I do like the place as it is so wouldn't want it to change too much.
The biggest improvement was that they now have beer (including 3 real ales), and they'll actually sell it to you and everything! That was far from guaranteed under the previous landlord.
