View Full Version : When do the students land back in Sheffield
pippadoll 13-09-2006, 11:05 PM Is this our last weekend before the masses invade pub land in Sheffield? Any tips for escaping the masses, if you go to town at the weekend? Not that I mind the students, I was one once, but the bars get too crowded and it takes ages to get served. Is Ivory on thier route?
donuticus 13-09-2006, 11:24 PM The University of Sheffields freshers week starts on Monday so the students are moving as we speak. SHU has its freshers week the following week.
bigbear 14-09-2006, 05:36 AM we're good down at the earl for a quiet drink late late late in the night without the hordes of students around :)
thank god for leadmill and their ilk that attract them with pound drinks...
goldenfleece 14-09-2006, 09:26 AM AVOID WEST STREET SATURDAY NIGHT.......unless prepared for well drunk freshers who have yet to learn Sheffield drinking etiquette!!
littleblue 14-09-2006, 11:05 AM I can'y wait for it all to start again
Jeez I feel like I've aged 30 years since moving and have turned into a whinging old person!!
the-lioness 14-09-2006, 11:28 AM yep they will be back in town next week!! my sis works at sheff Uni and sez its mayhem on freshers week- students askin directions etc all the time but i like the buzz of it and its nice to see all the bars and clubs full on a week night
littleblue 14-09-2006, 11:31 AM I'd personally like to see it a bit quiter ;)
Only so many nights you can cope with being woken up every 10 mins by people screaming and generally making a nuisance of themselves.
But hey ho I suppose its all part of living in the city centre. Just wish people would be just that little more aware of their surroundings.
morph 14-09-2006, 12:03 PM there are a couple little gems just off west street where student don't go
not banging pubs, but definitely easy to get served
- The Grapes Trippet Lane (behind the DSS), (live)music, pool and good atmosphere
- The Red Deer (just off Mappin Street), quiter, but sometimes busy - seems to be full of Uni Professor types, decent atmosphere
- The Bath Hotel (down the side street by the Swim Inn), good atmosphere, sometime live music, a real ale pub with a damn good selection of drinks
peacenlove 14-09-2006, 12:12 PM i've been in sheffield both when there have been no students around and when there has, and the city is a lot more buzzing and alive and the nightlife is better when students are around. also it seems like students make up half the population of sheffield! whats that about!? do sheffieldians completely avoid the city centre or is there just a lot less of them than i thought?!
THCAyle 14-09-2006, 12:24 PM avoid west street and division street, check out the sidestreets for calm boozers

i know exactly what you mean! when its the summer holidays and there are less in coming students around (dont 4 get all the students that are originally from sheffas come back into the city!) the place takes on a totally different vibe- much less cosmopolitan and a lot more chavvy ( i am allowed to say that:hihi: ) especially the clubs. but when the students come back in late september- it feels a lot more lively, modern and trendy. it has its good points as well as bad points- but i dont tend to go to the leadmill or revolution etc im more of a satday night clubber when the students tend to be out on a weeknight.
morph 14-09-2006, 12:33 PM do sheffieldians completely avoid the city centre or is there just a lot less of them than i thought?!
you would be suprised how many of us sheffielder's live in the town centre - I live in the flats above division street - but do tend to avoid the more 'townie' type pubs on west street/division street
especially varsity (urgh) or the one on mappin street that used to be revolution (double urgh)
CrookesLad 14-09-2006, 05:05 PM most students avoid going out on a friday and saturday to avoid the locals who spend half their wage on a shirt for the night out and the other half on beer before proceeding to go out looking for a fight or pull a munter. most students go out during the week to have a laugh and feel less threatened with people their own age.
hector_ilium 14-09-2006, 06:16 PM AVOID WEST STREET SATURDAY NIGHT.......unless prepared for well drunk freshers who have yet to learn Sheffield drinking etiquette!!
Sheffield drinking etiquette on West Street, Saturday night being to get hammered, have a punch up and (for the absolute minority) mug my mate for his mobile in the middle of a crowded street and put him in hospital.
Think I'd rather have the drunk freshers (when they're not colliding with oncoming traffic that is...why DO they do that?!)
pippadoll 15-09-2006, 12:06 AM I wasn't having a dig at students, like them being around, always have a good chat down in Broomhill, its just along with the local town can be quite mad for the next month.
Really like living in a big Uni town, wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Just need somewhere to escape to for a while. Thanks for tips. The Earl. Not sure where you are. Also just remembered the Rutland. Thats a nice little pub.
morph 15-09-2006, 09:34 AM The Earl. Not sure where you are.
the earl (used to be the earl of arundel and surrey) is on the corner where bramall lane meets queens road - I used to go down for the late night parties years ago, then it started to go downhill a bit... getting filled with the burberry cap brigade and the atmosphere got a little intimidating
not sure what it's like now though, as I say I've not been down there for a good year or so
BasilRathbon 15-09-2006, 11:56 AM So what night's the pyjama jump then? ;)
funkymiss 15-09-2006, 12:39 PM Think the pyjama jump was before my time... Can't wait for the shinaigans to commence though!
morph 15-09-2006, 06:32 PM ahh memories of the old pyjama jump - I think they stopped it in about 1994
used to be loads of fun, specially for us non-students at the time ;)
are they bringing it back???

very true......very true
bigbear 16-09-2006, 12:25 AM not sure what it's like now though, as I say I've not been down there for a good year or so
no burberry caps down at the earl to be sure :)
there was a time when certain promoters of nights started accepting all-comers, and since as a venue we operate as an "empty shell with bar", we were in no position to override the promoters and their occasional bad taste in clientale. this has now since changed and a more robust policy is implemented.
in the past few months, we have moved some of our better-performing nights to our sister clubs in town (fez & pravda fka sutra), eliminated most of the bad elements, put in a new sound system, and about to re-launch in the next few weeks.
come drop by for a quiet drink and chat sometime. before all the hordes hopefully rediscover the late late late place to party ;)

Total crap it would have to be a bloody expensive shirt. I have nothing against locals or students and when i have the chance to go out i get quite drunk but avoid trouble. Younger people cannot hold their drink and are more likely to fight.

Yes i can agree with you on the choice of those three morph. I'll see you in the bath on friday if you can spot me :suspect: :suspect: :suspect:

goldenfleece 19-09-2006, 11:04 AM students are back....Broomhill looked like a bomb site Sunday morning......broken glass, vomit, carrier bags, fast food wrappers, one abandoned item of clothing a rather garish 'pac-a-mac', empty pot noodle container rolling in the Nat West car park, crappy broken down old cars and thats just for starters...
WELCOME BACK.......what about some broken windows and sofas blocking the road eh? Trashed cookers on the pavement? Crappy VW beetles with flat tyres parked in a skip?
My washing machine would have to die the day the undergrads come back, makes the back yard look awesome!
ihrod9 20-09-2006, 09:30 AM They are back with force! West Street was packed yesterday. The traffic jams are getting bigger now the schools and them are back. I like Sheffield in the summer.
goldenfleece 20-09-2006, 11:42 AM Yes, West STreet full of clapped out VW camper vans with bits hanging off, chucking out white smoke and chugging along like a bus with a major engine fault...and most of them with less than well performing brakes so dont let them get right up your backside! ...WELCOME BACK!!!!!
PuressenceUK 20-09-2006, 11:46 AM ahh memories of the old pyjama jump - I think they stopped it in about 1994

PJ will never come back because of Supertram. The council/tram operator refused to stop running the trams down West Street to allow 20,000 revellers to pass into town.
The result - Sheffield loses its place in the Guinness Book Of Records for having the worlds biggest Annual all ticket party, and South Yorkshire charities lost out on around £60,000.
I helped to organise the very last one.
funkymiss 20-09-2006, 10:42 PM They don't call the trams 'silent killers' for nothing.
KILLJOYS
Sounds like a whole lot of fun to me.
Welcome back students, the whole filthy lot of you!
fresher06 21-09-2006, 02:09 PM Omg, i'm moving onto West Street tomorrow, is it that bad atm?
bigbear 21-09-2006, 02:38 PM imagine The Village but full of little kids, puke, discarded pieces of clothing, people yelling out randomly, sirens from police/ambulance, taxi doors slamming all hours of the morning, too many discarded flyers on the ground, resident drunks hanging around Bargain Beers, and that's probably a close approximation.

DONT LIVE IN TOWN...IT SUCKS!!!!!!
funkymiss 21-09-2006, 03:01 PM Funny how people don't think of these things before they move to town!
Speedy 21-09-2006, 08:07 PM Omg, i'm moving onto West Street tomorrow, is it that bad atm?

morph 22-09-2006, 09:36 AM and thats JUST on a SUNDAY afternoon!!!

I disagree, I lived on glossop road opposite the baths for three years, now I've been living opposite the forum for just over two years, no problems, no trouble and suprisingly enough the noise isn't too bad either - I love living bang in town.
EDIT: It's not so good if you have kids, but if you don't or are single then it is :)
DiscoPaul 22-09-2006, 04:18 PM I live In leadmill Court. Which is perfect, 5 minutes to west street and surprisingly quiet.

aaahh, but the hallam students dont start till next week- leadmill point, liberty court, and the converted factory at the back (name escapes me- next to jacksons) will be chaos as of tomorrow.
i promise- from experience ;)
x
DiscoPaul 22-09-2006, 08:34 PM Well most of those blocks are pretty much full now, theve been about for a few days. Theres the occassional bit of noise, but nothing too bad, its funny to be honest. In a couple of weeks they start getting cool and realise its cooler not to be loud, hehe
