View Full Version : Who does web design?
Hi,
I'm looking for web designers who might want to have some work but first I need a couple of questions answering:
If we have a website, can we have an online application form and how complex is it?
How much does it cost per page?
How would be maintain it?
Are fees payable each year?
Anything else I should know to avoid being ripped off?
Oh and if you are a web designer - can you do DTP for a brochure too?
Cheers :)
peardrops 13-09-2006, 20:38 Is this for a business venture? If so, then I could possibly help you. PM me if you wish.
DaBouncer 13-09-2006, 20:42 1) Yes - and depends on the application form (i.e. information that needed gathering, variables etc) Not too complicated to implement.
2) Depends on your requirements - pay per hour might be best option.
3) Again it depends if you CSS or XHTML experience or if you want a full content management system
4) Only if you require design updates... failing that hosting would be a renewable fee (optional)
5) Get a few quotes, recommendations for design, look at previous work, possibly email ex customers to see if they were happy and finally decide on your budget and aim to stick to it.
Revelations 13-09-2006, 20:59 1) Online application forms are quite simple.
2) How much does it cost per page? Do not pay more than £15 a page unless its rich media, ie) Macromedia/Adobe Flash, but most developers do not charge per page now.
3) How would be maintain it? - The hosting would cost you a few pounds a month, (which is not part of the design). And you can either have someone update the page for you now and again for a small fee, or pay the developer for an easy "admin" panel setup so you can easy change things yourself
4)Are fees payable each year? - Not to the designer, but most liekly to the Hosting and the domain name companys.
5)Anything else I should know to avoid being ripped off? - Yes, Ask around and take the median price that you are given.
6) Oh and if you are a web designer - can you do DTP for a brochure too?
Yes, I am also a webdeveloper, and if you PM me I can provide you with a quote.
Thanks
EDIT: I posted just before i saw your post DaBouncer, Nice to see we gave similar replys

And I'm not a web designer or developer :hihi:
I do have a lot of contacts in the field though.
If the OP needs a quote then drop me a PM with a brief od what she/he wants and I will pass them on to someone suitable.
Free quote as always.... can take it or leave it (which is always the best way).

Sort of, my website is down for updates, but I can send samples If you are interested.
Wow, great response there.
I shall put the info on here to be passed on or quoted upon by any of the respondants, we need:
Approx 6 pages of a website, one which deals with each field of drama, dance, music and art, a simple online application form to take details of name, address, tel no. medical issues, emergency contact, attending dates etc. One page of info in essence.
There should be an introductory 'frontpage' which describes the project overall and all of the pages except the app form should have photos (which I have).
We want it to be branded, we have a simple logo. The application form should be e-mailed to one of our team or more once entered. Maybe a standard enquiry form would be good and possibly an FAQ page?
It would need updating once a year ish.
The brochure would be for the same project, just a paperbased for people who are not web friendly.
The package would be for marketing our project to businesses for hire, so mostly the same info but with a 'buy me' tweak to the presentation.
The brochure and marketing package should only be the same amount of pages or less as the website.
Finally, we would benefit form someone who wants to do a logo design for us for a slightly different project. Ultimately we would need all the same requirements as described above but not until next year so could be a longer term earner for someone.
We are a public funded group, partly by Comic Relief so we aren't loaded and do work which benefits the community so although we have to present a corporate image as such we are not something huge, just small but important.
The same team of people are looking at a business venture which should be much bigger though, hence the further options.
If anyone can quote, or needs further info, please PM me.
Thanks for all your replies, it helps :)

Would you not charge more than £15/page if it was dynamic?
Would you not charge more than £15/page if it was dynamic?
Very true, it would be per hour or fixed cost for the whole job :)
A good source for IT people in the area is http://www.ictdirectory.co.uk/ it says it's national but I think there's a skew towards our area as Yorkshire Foreard provided some funding as I understand.
Revelations 14-09-2006, 15:29 Would you not charge more than £15/page if it was dynamic?
As I said before, most people do not charge per page any more. But still not more than £15 a page, as the extra scripts and databases would be charged extra.

If a fixed price is agreed, I always insist on 50% down payment.
If an hourly rate is agreed, work out (roughly) how many hours it will take, multiply by your hourly rate, add 15% and half it for an initial down payment.
I tend to charge when the job is done, I think it's bad customer service to take money up front. By all means get a purchase order or a contact, or even charge in stages if it's a large project. But I've found people don't like giving money to people they don't know on the assumption they will eventually get something for it.
