View Full Version : Potentially very silly question about bamboo needles

I'm so against plastic needles (:gag: :gag: :gag: ) that I want to consider all options before having to resort to them.

For those who haven't read my post about the Kidsilk Haze, I'm finding that my usual choice of lovely bamboo needles is proving to be a little tricky, as they tend too grip to tightly onto the Kidsilk Haze.

Now, here's the silly question: has anyone ever tried polishing bamboo needles? With something like wax furniture polish? Mine tend to take on a sheen with use, but these are a brand new pair bought at the weekend especially to knit 'River'.

Adding a little Pledge to the bamboo needles won't do them any harm... will it? :suspect: . Moreover, will it help to make them a little more slippy? Any ideas?

Wouldn't pledge rub off a bit too quick? I think you'd actually have to varnish them with gloss, to really make them stay slippy.

I tried some Lantern Moons a few weeks ago, and they were incredibly slippy. I'm not a fan of wooden needles but these were lovely :)

I was thinking along the lines of the Pledge helping to 'season' the bamboo a little, once the initial application had worn off. Sort of how the oil and perspiration from the skin conditions them into being a little slippier with continued use.

I think I'll check out the Lantern Moons, actually. I've admired them from afar, so any excuse to purchase a pair. Thanks for the recommendation.

I was thinking about the effect oil has too, but can't see pledge having enough lubrication to really make a difference. I wonder if a clear furniture wax would be better?

Wax was my first thought, then I considered what I had sitting in my cupboard and the Pledge came to mind :) .

Just had a quick look at Get Knitted's stock of Lantern Moons, and unfortnately they're out of the sizes I need. Does anyone have any ideas of another stockist before I resort to doing a search?

Beeswax polish should do it.

I'll put a tin in my trolly while I'm in Tesco later.

No more suggestions about how to make do with the Bamboos! I'm sold on the lovely, lovely Lantern Moons ;) .

From what I've gathered, Koigu and Nobu (?) yarns are available in John Lewis - at the store in Manchester (so I've been told). I wanted some yarn for a slash necked jumper, but I'll have to go there and check.

Nice scarf, that. I'm thinking of knitting a scarf in the round (with a circular needle) like the americans do. I'm looking at the designs from the latest Harry Potter films (Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire).

I'm knitting a jumper from here

The pattern is called salina. I'm doing it in a teal coloured tweed rather than that lime green that the photo calls for.

I'm knitting on bamboo needles, and the yarn has 'teeth' in the sense of 'gripping' to the needles, so I've been rubbling beeswax on the bamboo needles to get them smooth (because I prefer them to bamboo needles).

Happy knitting!

The Wool Baa on junction road stocks Noro, and the John Lewis in Sheffield can order in any yarn that any other store stocks. You'll need to know the colour that you want though.

peronsally i've fallen in love with Surina needles (http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/surina_needles.htm) They are amazingly smooth to work with and not heavy at all, also the fancy turned ends look gorgeous in my needle jug

I got some bamboo needles but I don't like them very much, they seem to grip the yarn far too much for me.

I've also got some Brittany birch (http://www.angelyarns.com/knitting/brittany.php) Needles and these too are very good.

I've never tried Surina as I never thought I'd like any wood ones, and I'm loathe to pay a lot of money for needles I might hate. Having now tried the Lantern Moon ones, I'm now not so sure that I do hate all wooden needles after all. I need to find a stockist that will let me play with them first, before deciding whether or not I want to actually commit to buying them.

Jabbers, for a minute there I thought you'd posted about your own knitting experiences too!

I shall definitely try the beeswax option, though I forget to buy some this evening. I'll get some tomorrow and report back. At least now I know it has been done.
