View Full Version : Pubs in Sheffield which are the best CrazyChris84 11-09-2006, 08:19 PM I think the best pub in Sheffield is The Swim Inn on West Street Sheffield. Meaks 11-09-2006, 08:22 PM Well its cheap enough I suppose. Not much in the way of chracter though. CrazyChris84 11-09-2006, 08:25 PM Hey the place has plenty of character and it has alot of friendly staff and regulars and the walls retract in the summer to let abit of air in it is so cool in there. :D Rich 11-09-2006, 08:27 PM I preferred the Dev Cat as a meet venue to be honest, sure the beer was a bit expensive, but I preferred the atmosphere in there to somewhere like Swim Inn, where the so-called "music" is so loud you can't hold a decent conversation without having to bawl your head off. :help: I sound old! I'm only 30! Meaks 11-09-2006, 08:37 PM The music in the Swim isn't very loud, in fact I don't think there is any? They did install a stinking great plasma screen though, which is always a conversation killer. BUT it does have retractable walls. What more could you want? ;) mgdl 11-09-2006, 09:11 PM Well more of a bar really but I like Muse - never too busy and never any chavs! SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 09:35 PM Swim Inn is okay for cheep booze, but it aint got any atmosphere at all. Very droll. Anyway, mine are : BlueWater S1 Roebuck Tavern Graduate The Fountain Ruskins The Monk Red Lion Cavendish Westways Oh this sounds like a pub crawl coming along  Rich 11-09-2006, 09:38 PM Swim Inn is okay for cheep booze, but it aint got any atmosphere at all. Very droll. And that's my point, Dev Cat was pricey, and not popular with younger forummers, but at least it had some kind of half decent atmosphere. CrazyChris84 11-09-2006, 10:11 PM I preferred the Dev Cat as a meet venue to be honest, sure the beer was a bit expensive, but I preferred the atmosphere in there to somewhere like Swim Inn, where the so-called "music" is so loud you can't hold a decent conversation without having to bawl your head off. :help: I sound old! I'm only 30! Hang on mate the Swim Inn doesn't play music its a weatherspoons they don't hold music licences thats why the boze is so cheap :) NPB! 11-09-2006, 10:13 PM Swim Inn is fine, but then so is anywhere you can get loaded on the cheap :) Meaks 11-09-2006, 10:13 PM The acoustics in the Dev Cat are awful. For some reason the sound of chatter seems deafening in there. Meaks 11-09-2006, 10:14 PM Swim Inn is fine, but then so is anywhere you can get loaded on the cheap :) Well, except maybe the Brown Bear.. :gag: :) NPB! 11-09-2006, 10:15 PM Fair comment there Meaks, there are always exceptions to the rule :) steve_sufc 11-09-2006, 10:19 PM I think the best pub in Sheffield is The Swim Inn on West Street Sheffield. I take it you've only been to 1 pub in Sheffield then? CrazyChris84 11-09-2006, 10:21 PM I take it you've only been to 1 pub in Sheffield then? sadly no but its the best for a quiet pint SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 10:25 PM sadly no but its the best for a quiet pint There is also : The Red Lion, thats a quiet pub, and nice as well. BlueWater is quiet pub, so is The Monk and also Lloyds (but clientelle not that good). tom3t0 11-09-2006, 10:26 PM which are the best eh? i'll have to say the ones on the outskirts and not in the centre, although they are some good pubs in the centre with a decent atmosphere, i find there is a friendlier atmosphere in the suburban pubs, - i might be saying this because ive begun pubcrawling away from the centre recently though. Basically have a drink in one go to the next and youll soon find some pubs you like pippadoll 11-09-2006, 11:11 PM Have you tried the Bath for a quiet pint. Nice place just off West Street, far from the madding crowd. NPB! 11-09-2006, 11:13 PM Cutlers was pretty good on Friday, I think, memory is a bit "fuzzy" lol Meaks 11-09-2006, 11:14 PM Have you tried the Bath for a quiet pint. Nice place just off West Street, far from the madding crowd. And an excellent pint too! A great little boozer, but shhh, keep it secret! :) NPB! 11-09-2006, 11:24 PM Think the cat may be out of the bag now its on here lol :) SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 11:25 PM And an excellent pint too! A great little boozer, but shhh, keep it secret! :) Is this the one we went to, its on a corner..... pippadoll 11-09-2006, 11:30 PM Yup, down a dark passage and on the corner, doors on both sides. One room is smokin, the other not. Lurvely. Basically have a drink in one go to the next and youll soon find some pubs you like Couldn't agree more, the best pubs are out of the city centre. The Sheaf View is great for its selection of beer, has a non smoking room and nice deck outside. The quiz on a Wednesday is always good fun. On the downside, the lighting is a bit bright and there's no music. I like the Lescar, especially for some of the stuff they have in the back room. Friday nights are top, and the pop quiz on the last Monday of the month is the best in the world) according to all the weekend supplements. The Union in Nether Edge is a nice boozer. City Centre wise, the best pubs for atmosphere are Dulo and the Washington. For a quieter (decent) pint, the Red Deer and the Bath are pretty good. Meaks 11-09-2006, 11:31 PM Is this the one we went to, its on a corner..... That's the one dear! :) SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 11:33 PM That's the one dear! :) Oh yes nice pub........ cannot think for the life of me why we went there, I must have been drunk ........ again :gag: James7x7 11-09-2006, 11:33 PM Forgot to mention the Rutland for its excellent beer garden Meaks 11-09-2006, 11:36 PM Forgot to mention the Rutland for its excellent beer garden Was excellent, now its just 'nice'. The place has been run down over many months, the silly old fool. SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 11:38 PM I quite like --> Yates <---- plays good music and DJ is hot as well, and always has a nice atmosphere. Meaks 11-09-2006, 11:42 PM I quite like --> Yates <---- Never speak to me again. SpiderPete 11-09-2006, 11:43 PM Never speak to me again. :o :o is it not one of your fav pubs Meaks 11-09-2006, 11:44 PM :o :o is it not one of your fav pubs The whole chain disgusts me. donuticus 12-09-2006, 01:39 AM It has to be the Runaway Girl mystie 12-09-2006, 02:18 AM Hey the place has plenty of character and it has alot of friendly staff and regulars and the walls retract in the summer to let abit of air in it is so cool in there. :D Last time I went in the swim inn there was a tramp in there asking everybody for money, the bar staff did nothing. If you like a good night with good beer and good atmosphere then you can't beat the Dev cat. Meaks 12-09-2006, 11:51 PM Last time I went in the swim inn there was a tramp in there asking everybody for money, the bar staff did nothing. Sorry, I was skint and needed a drink. What else could I do? :( SpiderPete 12-09-2006, 11:55 PM Sorry, I was skint and needed a drink. Its especially nice at christmas so cosy with all the lights up, and in summer it gets so packed its unbelievable!! GO TO STRINES!! you wont regret it  hector_ilium 13-09-2006, 11:13 AM Best pub in Sheffield is my livingroom - best beers on tap, big screen, jukebox always plays my favourite songs, late license, takeaway delivers to the door, only the best company...and not too embarrassing if I pass out or fall asleep. Not too good for making new friends or pulling tho! nick2 13-09-2006, 11:19 AM Sell your body  and make do with a bag of crisps. defstef 13-09-2006, 11:22 AM The Sheaf View is great for its selection of beer, has a non smoking room and nice deck outside. A definitive and, if I may say so James, highly correct review of Sheffo's best drinking establishments. Dulo is an excellent pub - very much a 'young person's' pub, without becoming a bar (for this reason, The Runaway Girl, as excellent a place as it is, misses out on a 'best pub' list by this crucial criterion, i.e. it isn't one). As brilliant as it is, however, it doesn't match up to The Lescar, which is actually the best pub in the known universe. Dulo isn't a pub either - it's a "pre-club bar", or something similarly pretentious. Although it tended to be a bit scruffy, its previous incarnation as The Beer Engine was infinitely more characterful. Greer 13-09-2006, 12:35 PM I like the Swim Inn best too :) happyhippy 13-09-2006, 01:01 PM Dulo isn't a pub either - it's a "pre-club bar", or something similarly pretentious. Although it tended to be a bit scruffy, its previous incarnation as The Beer Engine was infinitely more characterful. And it was even better as the Royal Oak before that. happyhippy 13-09-2006, 01:16 PM My favourites (in the city centre anyway), in no particular order: Washington Bath Hotel Red Deer Rutland Arms Dog and Partridge (well, I am Irish) Fagan's (well, I am Irish) In the last 10-15 years, many of the 'pubs' in town have either been pulled down (eg, Yorkshire Grey, Hornblower), lost (Foresters Arms), changed to bar type places (Yorkshireman's Arms), or simply ruined (Mail Coach). I'm not saying that the ones I pointed out just there were fantastic (although I miss them all, the Foresters and the Hornblower in particular), but there really aren't many 'pub' pubs (if you know what I mean) left in the city centre. swarm 13-09-2006, 01:43 PM Bannercross Hotel on Eccy Road. Foxy landlady and you can have a bowl. Followed with a cheekey hour in Naps then a bab! BRINGITON 13-09-2006, 02:29 PM I can't believe how many folks have suggested the Swim Inn! :o It's a pre-packed, identikit, pub-by-numbers! Awful place, I don't even like walking past it in case I see inside! :D Colmanspig 13-09-2006, 02:51 PM Swin in is w@nk Best pubs. in town , the frog and pazzer , but it has gone a bit odd know. so i'll have to go with the washington. best for a quite pint then its the red deer. out of town , i think the best ones are the sheaf view and the new barrack tav. i like dulos. but also have a soft spot for the old crown inn, very friendly staff, let you eat chips in doors! Alemonster 13-09-2006, 04:37 PM Hi everyone, I'm a new forummer - just joined today:) I have to agree with other postings about pubs in the city centre - there a probably more bars than proper pubs. For my money the best pub in Sheffield is the Kelham Island Tavern. It has great staff, great atmosphere and above all excellent beer. |
