Hey the place has plenty of character and it has alot of friendly staff and regulars and the walls retract in the summer to let abit of air in it is so cool in there. :D

I preferred the Dev Cat as a meet venue to be honest, sure the beer was a bit expensive, but I preferred the atmosphere in there to somewhere like Swim Inn, where the so-called "music" is so loud you can't hold a decent conversation without having to bawl your head off.

They did install a stinking great plasma screen though, which is always a conversation killer.

BUT it does have retractable walls. What more could you want? ;)

There is also : The Red Lion, thats a quiet pub, and nice as well.

BlueWater is quiet pub, so is The Monk and also Lloyds (but clientelle not that good).

which are the best eh? i'll have to say the ones on the outskirts and not in the centre, although they are some good pubs in the centre with a decent atmosphere, i find there is a friendlier atmosphere in the suburban pubs, - i might be saying this because ive begun pubcrawling away from the centre recently though.

Yup, down a dark passage and on the corner, doors on both sides. One room is smokin, the other not. Lurvely.

Couldn't agree more, the best pubs are out of the city centre. The Sheaf View is great for its selection of beer, has a non smoking room and nice deck outside. The quiz on a Wednesday is always good fun. On the downside, the lighting is a bit bright and there's no music. I like the Lescar, especially for some of the stuff they have in the back room. Friday nights are top, and the pop quiz on the last Monday of the month is the best in the world) according to all the weekend supplements. The Union in Nether Edge is a nice boozer.

City Centre wise, the best pubs for atmosphere are Dulo and the Washington. For a quieter (decent) pint, the Red Deer and the Bath are pretty good.

Last time I went in the swim inn there was a tramp in there asking everybody for money, the bar staff did nothing.

If you like a good night with good beer and good atmosphere then you can't beat the Dev cat.

The Place in Broomhill has a great atmosphere, good drink prices and nice food, give it a go. . . . .

it is the ultimate country pub, GORGEOUS views, amazing traditional food (cooked my a good mate of mine hi Tom! and plenty of good beers on. Its especially nice at christmas so cosy with all the lights up, and in summer it gets so packed its unbelievable!!

Best pub in Sheffield is my livingroom - best beers on tap, big screen, jukebox always plays my favourite songs, late license, takeaway delivers to the door, only the best company...and not too embarrassing if I pass out or fall asleep. My favourites (in the city centre anyway), in no particular order:

Washington
Bath Hotel
Red Deer
Rutland Arms
Dog and Partridge (well, I am Irish)
Fagan's (well, I am Irish)

In the last 10-15 years, many of the 'pubs' in town have either been pulled down (eg, Yorkshire Grey, Hornblower), lost (Foresters Arms), changed to bar type places (Yorkshireman's Arms), or simply ruined (Mail Coach). I'm not saying that the ones I pointed out just there were fantastic (although I miss them all, the Foresters and the Hornblower in particular), but there really aren't many 'pub' pubs (if you know what I mean) left in the city centre.

Bannercross Hotel on Eccy Road. Foxy landlady and you can have a bowl. Followed with a cheekey hour in Naps then a bab!

Best pubs. in town , the frog and pazzer , but it has gone a bit odd know. so i'll have to go with the washington. best for a quite pint then its the red deer.

out of town , i think the best ones are the sheaf view and the new barrack tav. i like dulos. but also have a soft spot for the old crown inn, very friendly staff, let you eat chips in doors!

Hi everyone, I'm a new forummer - just joined today:) I have to agree with other postings about pubs in the city centre - there a probably more bars than proper pubs. For my money the best pub in Sheffield is the Kelham Island Tavern. It has great staff, great atmosphere and above all excellent beer.
