I was earlier shopping at my local safeway. (the one on Eccy road) Now Morrisway. When I noticed a strange phenomenon that I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on. As soon as there is a lull in the volume of shoppers at the check out, as soon as there was the merest speck of time inbetween customers the check out assistant signed off the till and disappeared. What intrigued me was the speed at which they sign off. They then scurry away like rats!! Where are they all going? Is there some eternal orgy going on behind the big black flappy doors that none of us are aware of and that the assistants can't wait to get back to. ARE THEY BEING GIVEN DRUGS!! Because they are the only two reasons I know for that intensity of scurrying. No wonder they all look depressed. I think Safeway should come clean. What is going on? If anyone has an explaination please let me know.
Perhaps they just need a wee :D . I don't suppose they can say to a queue of customers waiting to pay 'just hang on while I pop to the loo' so as soon as there is chance off they go.
It's also likely that they are off for their break and seeing as they only get 10 minutes the quicker thay get away from the customers (who think they should be their personal slaves) the longer break they get.
It's actually a Saferose or a Waitway at the mo. Transformation should be completed sometime in september.

They are probably teaching the staff to 'Multi-task'. This ivolves having to run in the back to fill in personal achievement time sheets. Employees become jack of all trades, master of none and end up completely knackered with no job satisfaction.
Quite a few companies are doing it these days...

Highly likey as most companies seem to live in mortal fear of the fact that one of their employees might not be making a profit for them every waking moment of the day.

Happens more and more these days but can't employers see that it gets them nowhere. Are you committed to an employee like that? Would you work over and above your line of duty? I think the answer is no and no.
Can't they see that creating a negative attitude amongst their workers is not a good thing?

A few years ago I used to work in a supermarket and help out on the checkouts now and then. I find this very odd as when I worked there you could not leave the checkout at all, because you couldn't leave the money unattended, even if you had logged out of the tills.
From the description it sounds like this person was a relief cashier just hopping on a till to get queues down etc. What generally happens with this robbing Peter to pay Paul attitude is that the shelves become empty while this person is stuck on a till. It doesn't work, it is just a way of cutting down on wages by getting people to do more than one job.
