View Full Version : Sadie keeps being sick
As the title says :( She has more or less been bringing back up every meal for the last couple of days :help: Is there anything we can do or is it a vet job? She is fine in herself, usual playful nature, eating and drinking normally, toileting normally etc, just doesn't seem to be able to keep any food down. She's fed on a wet diet with dry biscuit as well.
kittenta 10-09-2006, 20:34 If nothing about her diet has changed etc then I would definatly take her to the vet. Have you observed how much water she is drinking and whether or not it is more than normal, the vet may ask this. It is probably just a bug of some sort but it's better to get her checked out.
I hope shes ok
and whether or not it is more than normal
Thats the puzzling thing, she is fine apart from this, nothing unusual at all, still drinking the same as before, eating like a horse etc etc
Is she up to date with her worming programme? If not make sure you deworm her as this could be a cause for overeating and vomiting.
If she's still drinking plenty (and replacing lost fluids), try feeding her boiled rice and cooked chicken (obviously no bones) for a couple of days. Give her no tit bits, just the rice and chicken. It is so bland that she should be able to keep it down and if she has a bug it should be too bland to feed the bug.
If she does keep the bland diet down, keep it up for a couple of days before transferring her slowly back onto her normal food.
If she can't keep that down I'd recommend taking her to the vet. Or, if you're too worried, take her there sooner.
kittenta 10-09-2006, 22:05 arn't scrambled eggs supposed to be good for them too for this type of thing?
I hadn't actually heard that. Eggs can be good if the dog is having diarrhoea but I didn't know they were good at starving bugs! I won't argue though as I know no better ;)
I was always told to feed just chicken and rice as a very bland diet until the dog seems well enough to eat normally again.
I thought no food was better at starving bugs? just alot of water..
Is chicken and rice good at starving bugs then? ( sorry I just read again..because its bland..excuse me)
That's how I understand it Janny,
For people, starving to rid yourself of a bug is fine, but dogs don't understand and most dogs will kick up a fuss if not fed. So people generally tend to feed a bland diet to try and kill the bug off.
I could be wrong though - I'm open to learning new things!
When my Mum's Greyhounds get anything wrong with them, or if they've been caught eating rubbish it usually means no food whatsoever for 24 hours then the gradual feeding of rice/chicken/scrambled egg providing any symptoms have passed
Yeah..
If I remember rightly when my dog was a pup..he was being sick from about 6pm all way through the night until the next morning, we took him to the vets when we got up the next day and she gave him an injection and told us just to give him plenty of water for the rest of that day..and then give him a little bit of food just to try him on after that..
Is she up to date with her worming programme? If not make sure you deworm her as this could be a cause for overeating and vomiting.
Yep she's fine with that, she's not really overeating, just normal but seems unable to keep it down.
Bless her - I hope the advice on here sees her right and if not get her to the vet. If it's a bacterial bug she'll need an antibiotic injection/tablets but it should clear up pretty quickly after that.
when Brude was last poorly (though it was diarrhoea) the vet gave him a pro-biotic oral injection, so you could try giving hem probiotic yoghurt or yakult or actimel.
There's a thread I started about 'what to feed a sick dog' that may be useful
We had a little JRT before Tess, remember when she was ill and we tried her on some live yogurt - she was not impressed at all!!!! Could try it with Sadie though!
UPDATE = Sadie now seems to have stopped being sick, we have left her dry food down but she has not had any wet food for a day or two. Fingers crossd this is the end of it!
i always treat sickness & the trots the same. stop all wet food.
try a couple of arrowroot biscuits if its the trots.
anything bland for sickess the same as post op. chicken ,pasta, rice etc
then only dry food the day after that or bread with a little luke warm water to soften it .
you haven't used Frontline or similar lately have you?
my youngest dog puked when we used that on her recently.
No she hasn't been frontlined recently.
Think I spoke a little soon saying she seemed to have stopped being sick as there was some more today, we have now stopped her dry food and she has had some live yogurt, if this doesn't sort her out then she is off to the vets tommorow
Aw bless her. I hope the live yoghurt helps and she is soon feeling much better.
If not, I hope the vet can sort her out. Is she insured?
Is she insured?
Er no! :shakes:
Shes fine now thanks Strix :) We starved her for a day then she had some live yogurt, after that we reintroduced dry food and then finally wet food and she has kept everything down
kittenta 17-09-2006, 20:25 Glad to hear she doing ok
