View Full Version : Help re broadband
Danny_Boy 10-09-2006, 16:29 I have some questions I need help with. I have just ordered myself a Dell PC and want broadband only thing is due to having a great contract on my mobile I never bothered with a home phone when I moved into my new house there is a box with a line but I have no idea of its connected, so my question is how do I get in connected and does it cost anything?
Other questions if I have Sky broadband do I still have to pay line rental to BT? I know talk talk offer the line rental and broadband at a very reasonable price but as my phone is probably not connected up will they be able to install there broad band. Also does anyone know if I go with BT will they charge me to re-connect my phone line?
littleboo 10-09-2006, 16:33 yes you will have to have a BT line installed and yes you will have to pay the line rental.
craig3636 10-09-2006, 16:36 i reconnected to bt from cable 3 months ago,as long as the line is in it won't cost you a penny to reconnect to bt and if you take sky broadband you still have to pay bt the line rental. you also have to be a currant sky digital subscriber too to get sky broadband.
Savannah2 10-09-2006, 16:42 Whatever you do, don't go with TalkTalk (http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=talktalk).

Craig I am a sky customer but cant get the new broad band service yet in my area can only get connect which is £17.99 plus bt line rental which I think is £11.99, If I had BT broadband would that include line rental?

your telephone exchange you are connected to must be llu enabled or unbundled as it is commonly known.
there is a site that you can put your phone number in and it tells you if it is enabled or when it is due.
it also tells you the isp's that are already llu anabled.
il just have a look and try and find it for you.
craig3636 10-09-2006, 17:50 put your number and postcode in here and it will tell you what you can have.

UKSentinel 11-09-2006, 10:30 Why not try virgin broadband. There's no 12 month contract so it you don't like it you can cancel it. You'll need a BT line though

There is a cancellation charge if you leave within 12 months.
Cancellation charge:: For customers ordering the Service on or after June 7th 2005, Virgin.net reserves the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £50.00 (fifty pounds) if you cancel your Virgin.net Broadband account within 12 months of the date your Broadband Service was activated. Customers who are moving home will be exempt from this cancellation charge, provided that the Service is retained at the customer's new address.
UKSentinel 11-09-2006, 16:34 Didn't realise that Savannah2. Thanks. I suppose we've got the ntl merger to thank for that little clause being added. It didn't used to be there
lostnfound 11-09-2006, 17:12 I'm fairly sure they've been doing that for ages. They used to be one of the only ISPs giving free activation on a monthly contract.
Which was a bit silly really :)

We have been checking up regards euro1net.com and have decided to try aol, looking around ADSL pages came across http://www.prodigynet.co.uk this gives out some information which maybe of use to you,all we could make out was the fact that our exchange can only offer 512k? this looks like a normal bt exchange line with no ADSL enabled unquote.

the first link he gave can be used just by your post code and house number
just leave the number box blank and itll carry on

Would stay well clear of these cowboys.
If considering AOHELL, then I would advise connecting using a router - No need to install the 200MB of kak software from the disk.

Thanks for that advice, have chosen aol, thought maybe a big company means less chance of going the way of euro1net.com i.e. running off with our money.
